- Hello and welcome to the latest edition of Adam Up
This is my first edition of Adam Up this year, so welcome to 2021!
I do hope that this year will bring many positive changes for all of us.
As I have intended to do for the past 20 years with this newsletter and broadcast, I'll be addressing a wide variety of topics and hope to bring interesting research and useful articles and videos to you readers.
This is the 700th edition of Adam Up! The main aim of this sporadic periodical has always been to equip readers with stimulating information and psychological tools to aid with varying facets of life as well as helping to concentrate upon and amplify positive shifts we can make in our thinking, our behaviour, our attitudes and perspectives - and it is during these times when so much seems negative
that I want my work to be able to help.
While quarantined at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as homeschooling my children testing my sanity while continuing to do my best to run my business, I have had the opportunity to bring some long-percolating aspects of my own research to fruition. I look forward to being able to share some results with you later this year.
The reason for my headline today is that my daughter loves Ariana Grande and watches a number of TV shows she starred in when she was younger. My daughter asked me what 'quirks' were because she'd seen a quote of Ariana Grande's with the word in... The quote is one I decided to use in my article on the same topic - celebrating quirks. A topic very close to my heart and one I'm delighted my daughter is now
aware of.
In this edition, I also have a bunch of other new articles covering the topics of how to get more our of life, letting go of grudges, motivating yourself in a lockdown, valuing yourself more and overcoming life's distractions.
I've also included a solitary new video; one that I recorded to advise the public about our plans for the 2021 and the 2022 UK Hypnosis Convention.
Myself, and all of us who work here hope you will all stay safe and healthy wherever you are in this world. If you are in lockdown, I hope you are coping and your mental health is bearing up; I have added an additional section today with a lot of free articles, videos and resources to help deal with varying aspects of the Pandemic and life in lockdown. I hope you find them useful and
beneficial.
And just as a reminder, you are receiving this email because you signed up for this ezine, downloaded a course prospectus or attended a course at some point in time. If you no longer wish to receive this weekly hypnosis and personal development ezine, you may unsubscribe by clicking the link at the foot of this email. I only want you to receive it each week if you find it of value and you actually read it.
Also, we delete you from our distribution if you have not opened these emails for a while.
In compliance with GDPR, the only information that we hold is your name and email address. We will not share these details with anyone and we will only use them to send you this and related, relevant broadcasts. This broadcast is only sent to people who have signed up with our double opt-in system.
Ok, let's get on with it, shall we?
Articles: What's New?
A wide range of new articles to help in varying aspects of life here today...

With the world facing so many challenges this year, there seems to be more resentment around to accompany much of the division that exists. Letting go of resentment and grudges is what I’m writing about in this first article…
“Grudges are a waste of perfect happiness. Laugh when you can. Apologize when you should and let go of what you can’t change.” – Drake
As human beings, we tend to respond to mistreatment by returning the favour. If we’re not in a position to punish the other person in some way, we move on to holding a grudge; and then wait for an opportunity to execute ‘justice’ at some later point. In our daily lives, these decisions tend to be nuclear and are often irreparable.
The problem with holding a grudge is that it’s worst effect is often upon the holder. We know this, it is not a new discovery. Yet we still struggle with it. We say things like “to err is human, to forgive is divine” which affirm our human weakness for mistakes and acknowledges the difficulty of forgiving another. When we withhold grudges, it becomes a barrier to our own peace. The restless negativity of a grudge festers within us and prevents us from being the best version of our self.
Forgiveness does not condone what the other person did, it simply frees us from it and allows us to move on and engage our energy with aspects of life that will serve us better. Read the full article with references here...
I wrote this next article to kick start the new year! After the year we have just had, many of us are looking to put it well behind us and set about making 2021 a far better one. I have written often on the topic of getting more out of life and it seems more pertinent than ever right now…
“The purpose of life, after all, is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.” – Eleanor Roosevelt
In order to get something you’ve never had, you most likely have to do something you’ve never done.
The greatest adventure begins at the end of your comfort zone so just go for it and read this article in full with all of the tips it contains...
How to Get More Out Of Life.
When presented with the psychological tasks I give to my clients and students, many tell me how they get distracted prior to and during them. Likewise, with so much vying for our attention in modern life (even during a lockdown) so many of us get easily distracted.
“Work is hard. Distractions are plentiful. And time is short.” – Adam Hochschild
To control something we usually need to understand it correctly…First of all, figure out why you might be getting distracted? Read the article in full here....
Since the start of the new year, those who follow me on social media will have seen me posting a few pictures of my assault bike, dumbbells and other snippets to do with a challenge my gym has set throughout the current lockdown – in the gym members Facebook group we share photos of our meals and recipes, we log live workouts we do with fellow members, we have group calls and regular interaction, and we hold
ourselves accountable to each other in a number of ways.
There are a number of component parts that have served to keep me motivated to exercise and workout, Several strategies that I employ in my family life and my work life too, as a means of keeping myself driven and motivated during lockdown, and I thought it would be useful to write about that here – keeping motivated during these challenging times. Read on...
Next, I’m writing about how to value yourself more.
“Love yourself first and everything else falls into line. You really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world.” – Lucille Ball
We all have the capacity to love and value ourselves a huge amount and in a variety of ways; the benefits of doing so are great and will enrich our lives in a number of ways. Read on for all the references and the full article...
My daughter loves Ariana Grande. I have started loving her two since I read this quote by her…
“Be happy with being you. Love your flaws. Own your quirks. And know that you are just as perfect as anyone else, exactly as you are.” – Ariana Grande
It was a leap of faith for me to stop attempting to be a template version of who I should be professionally and personally in my work and my life, and choose to expose my quirks and then actually celebrate them and let them go on to become part of the way I represent my business, my college, my approach to therapy, the way I write, the way I present and communicate in my personal life.
Deep down, even the most successful people feel inadequate on occasion. This sometimes stems from comparing yourself and your life to others. From a very early age onwards, we develop a sense of where we fit into society’s various systems based on a wide range of factors and variables. The expectations are placed upon us even as small children by different societal structures (family, school etc). Read this

Pandemic and Lockdown Resources:
A range of skills, articles, videos and resources to help during lockdown and during pandemic times in general...

Covid Specific:
When the official announcement was made by the WHO stating that the covid-19 coronavirus is now considered a pandemic, I thought I’d offer up a lecture about what us hypnotherapists can credibly do to help. That is, over and beyond the practical official guidelines and offering stress/anxiety related support, I thought I'd share some detailed information about a direct way we (hypnotherapists and self-hypnotists) can help the cause by helping spread quality information and teaching or applying
the use of hypnosis to advance immune functioning.
There are some wonderful iniatives that some hypnotherapists are engaged in currently and I wanted to help support that.
For those of you who are not hypnotherapists, I mentioned some really useful articles in the video too, here are links to those:
I hope there is plenty of use for you here that can be used to advance your immune functioning; plenty of resource, information and application that can help during these challenging times.
From the archives at my personal website, these sessions may also be really relevant to help relieve symptoms for those who sadly contract the virus:
Free Self-Hypnosis Tuition:
I think that self-hypnosis is an incredible skill, a psychological skill that can be imported to most environments of your life and applied to most aspects of your mental and physical well-being.
There are many myths and misconceptions about self-hypnosis, and it is typically taught incorrectly and not in line with scientific findings or with academic literature. It is an easy to apply skill that anyone can learn and achieve great things with and an aim of ours here is to disseminate that understanding to the public.
A great place to start learning is to download my self-hypnosis roadmap if you've not done so already, for free on this page of the college website: Self-Hypnosis Roadmap.
These free resources are all based upon my own research conducted at Bournemouth University and my book on the subject, the Science of Self-Hypnosis.
Useful resources for hypnotherapists:
Visit this page for lots of resources for hypnotherapists.
The Anglo European College of Therapeutic Hypnosis:
In recent weeks, my social media output has been filled with video clips of me squatting at the gym, memes about hypnosis, photos from my life and loads of articles from our vaults and some other bits and pieces.
