- Hello and welcome to the latest edition of Adam Up
It's been a while since I sent out an edition of this broadcast. August was peak Summer holidays and I had some time off. September is here though, my children have gone back to school; delighted for my sanity and for their education, but also nervous about coronavirus issues. I was back at Bournemouth University yesterday speaking to the team there about my upcoming research projects, and after a few
months away, tomorrow I am back in the classroom, running the second half of this year's intensive hypnotherapy practitioner diploma. I am nervous about being back - but we have symptom checks, thermometer readings, hand sanitiser at the door, socially distanced desks, masks for when needed, ventilation and common sense to make it as safe as possible. Though I can't wait to return to real-life teaching. I have some pent-up teaching energy to unleash and deliver to my upcoming classes. Onto
today and this edition....
The main aim of this Adam Up periodical newsletter I've been sending out for the past two decades has always been to equip readers with stimulating information and psychological tools to aid with varying facets of life as well as helping to concentrate upon and amplify positive shifts we can make in our thinking, our behaviour, our attitudes and perspectives - and it is during these times when so much seems
negative that I want my work to be able to help.
The reason for my headline is that most people tend to associate hypnosis and the experience of being hypnotised with being zonked out, eyes closed, relaxed, static, and so on. Yet, hypnosis is just as effective when conducted and utilised by people who are active and alert. Those that have studied and researched this often use a stationery bicycle and have hypnotic subjects pedal while being hypnotised; and they respond just as though they were sat back with their eyes closed. It's wonderful
stuff and shatters many of the stereotypes about hypnosis.
In this edition, I have a range of new articles covering topics such as refreshing your feelings, creating happy memories in challenging times, how to effectively express your feelings and overcome a victim mentality.
I've also included a bunch of new videos; a couple examining friendship and social interaction and then some aimed at the hypnotherapy world about the topics of active alert hypnosis and the need to reduce the sycophancy in the hypnotherapy world.
Myself, and all of us who work here hope you will all stay safe and healthy wherever you are in this world.
And just as a reminder, you are receiving this email because you signed up for this ezine, downloaded a course prospectus or attended a course at some point in time. If you no longer wish to receive this weekly hypnosis and personal development ezine, you may unsubscribe by clicking the link at the foot of this email. I only want you to receive it each week if you find it of value and you actually read it.

Ok, let's get on with it, shall we?
Articles: What's New?
How to Overcome Victim Mentality, How to Express Your Feelings in a Healthy Way, How to Create Happy Memories During Difficult Times & How to Refresh Your Life...

In recent months I have written about using the current pandemic situation as a possible opportunity to make a new start, or even to reinvent yourself. In a similar vein, in this article I am talking about refreshing your life.
We all go through ups and downs. But when the downward dip lasts a long time, it’s sometimes difficult to keep a positive attitude. You might begin to second guess the plan, doubt your direction, lose confidence, and feel stuck. But the staleness can be overcome – recognising the problem is often a large part the solution.
There are several things you can do to push past staleness, shake things up a bit and refresh your life, read the full article for all the references and ideas...
How to Refresh Your Life.
Secondly today.... All of us are living in an unprecedented time. COVID-19 has impacted people across the globe. Our everyday life looks a lot different from what it was before the pandemic.
Naturally, many of us are worried and anxious. We may not have all been infected with the virus, but we are all certainly impacted by it in some shape or form.
It is easy to focus on the bad things as a result of the pandemic but many good things can be recognised too; taking this time of pause to think about what is important, helping others, coming together, finding creative ways to stay in touch with family and friends, and more. Many times of great adversity have created times that can also be reflected upon in positive ways, in some part at least. Important for us is the creation of memories. Memories, especially happy ones, fortify
relationships and ensure endurance, even through difficult times. Memories can nourish us healthily in a number of ways. More importantly, tough times don’t necessarily last but the memory does.
Memories don’t necessarily happen by accident or passively. That is, we can plan our lives and examine the way we think and reflect in order to create enduring happy and beneficial memories with the ones we love. Here are some simple ways to create happy memories during this difficult time... read the full article for all the references and ideas...
How to Create Happy Memories During Difficult Times.
There’s a lot of feeling being expressed in the world currently, and not all of it is being expressed effectively – some of it simply serves to create ill-feeling and negative emotions in others. With feelings running so high, I wanted to write about how to express feelings in an effective way….
In this article I discuss how expressing emotions can help according to research, and how to go about it - read the full article for all the references and steps...
Finally... Positive psychology has coined certain psychological characteristics as contributing to and being labelled as “Victim Mentality.” Many think it is something that other people are effected by, but you'd be surprised how many of
us experience and adopt this mindset often in our day-to-day lives.
In this article, I explain what it is and give a wide range of ideas about how to manage it and ideally be free of it so that it will benefit you greatly - read the full article for all the references and steps...

Building Your Social Interaction, How to be a Good Friend, Why Don't More Hypnotherapists Use Active Alert Hypnosis? and the Need for Less Sycophancy in the Hypnotherapy Field....

A couple of weekends ago, my best friend from school and his family came to visit my family. We spent time at our local beach together, had a barbecue and laughed about old times. During one of our more in depth conversations, he reminded me of a time in my life when I attempted to overcome a personal challenge by myself, without any help or support at all, and was failing miserably. He
reminded me of the term; “alone we are outnumbered.”
It is something I have replayed in my mind a lot since. This video is influenced by that.
In this video I talk about a great deal of science that supports social interaction being good for your physical and mental well-being.
Enjoy…
I’m directly following on from the previous video about the benefit of social interaction and talking about friendship in this video. As adults, we need to make an extra effort to make friends.
Why bother though? What are the benefits of friendship? Friends and friendships offer us so much on so many levels;
in this video I discuss the scientifically proven benefits and a number of evidence based ways to develop friendships and for you and your friends to derive more benefit as a result.…
Recently, I shared my weekly evidence based hypnosis meme on social media and it was about active alert hypnosis. When thinking of hypnosis most people will think of a sleep like and very relaxed state. Active-alert hypnosis is achieved through physical activity.
In this video, I discuss some of the main research that has looked at active alert hypnosis and attempt to briefly answer the question as to why more hypnotherapists do not use active alert hypnosis or teach it to their clients to use in active aspects of their lives. Enjoy…
Video: Why Don’t More Hypnotherapists Use Active Alert Hypnosis?
Finally...According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a sycophant as a person who praises powerful people in order to get their approval. In this video I am doing my best to highlight how much this happens in the hypnotherapy field and that it needs to lessen or stop altogether if we are to truly grow as a field. Enjoy...
The Ultimate Pandemic Skill:
Learn Self-Hypnosis...
|
I'm biased, but I think that self-hypnosis is an incredible skill, a psychological skill that can be imported to most environments of your life and applied to most aspects of your mental and physical well-being.
There are many myths and misconceptions about self-hypnosis, and it is typically taught incorrectly and not in line with scientific findings or with academic literature. It is an easy to apply skill that anyone can learn and achieve great things with and an aim of ours here is to disseminate that understanding to the public.
Free Self-Hypnosis Tuition:
A great place to start learning is to download my self-hypnosis roadmap if you've not done so already, for free on this page of the college website: Self-Hypnosis
Roadmap.
These free resources are all based upon my own research conducted at Bournemouth University and my book on the subject, the Science of Self-Hypnosis.
My Online Self-Hypnosis Educational Programme:
I have some exciting news. In the past couple of weeks, we have added many additional resources and additional comprehensive materials to our online self-hypnosis educational training programme.
Anyone who ever invests in this programme gets all the updates for free for life, so if you already own this programme, you'll have lots of extra study materials to read, tune in to and apply to your life. If you are yet to invest and are considering, then I simply wanted you to know that it offers even more value now; and the investment fee has remained the same as it ever was (less than one hundred
pounds).
In recent weeks, my social media output has been filled with video clips of me squatting at the gym, memes about hypnosis, photos from my life and loads of articles from our vaults and some other bits and pieces.
