- Hello and welcome to the latest edition of Adam Up
We are in lockdown again here in the UK. I hope you are coping, I hope you are safe and well. This is a different edition to usual. I am only sharing articles, videos and resources that I think are of value and use to my readers during the challenge raised by the pandemic, there is no talk of anything else, and nothing being promoted or sold here today in this edition...
The main aim of this Adam Up periodical newsletter I've been sending out for the past two decades has always been to equip readers with stimulating information and psychological tools to aid with varying facets of life as well as helping to concentrate upon and amplify positive shifts we can make in our thinking, our behaviour, our attitudes and perspectives - and it is during these times when so much
seems negative that I want my work to be able to help.
The reason for my headline today is that evidence suggests when you have more to look forward to, it is mentally and physically healthy for you in a wide number of ways and it is a topic I write about in a new article.
In this edition, I have a couple of other new articles covering the topics of how to set boundaries in life, why you benefit when you stop bragging, and also an article on how to find more joy in life.
I've also included a couple of new videos; one that I previously mentioned about using self-hypnosis to maximise gains made at the gym (the link was broken last time, apologies!), and another one whereby I talk about how to always have something to look forward to, and one whereby I address a recent time when someone online asked my publicly why I don't use hypnosis to cure myself.
Myself, and all of us who work here hope you will all stay safe and healthy wherever you are in this world. If you are in lockdown, I hope you are coping and your mental health is bearing up; I have added an additional section today with a lot of free articles, videos and resources to help deal with varying aspects of the Pandemic and life in lockdown. I hope you find them useful and
beneficial.
And just as a reminder, you are receiving this email because you signed up for this ezine, downloaded a course prospectus or attended a course at some point in time. If you no longer wish to receive this weekly hypnosis and personal development ezine, you may unsubscribe by clicking the link at the foot of this email. I only want you to receive it each week if you find it of value and you actually read it.
Also, we delete you from our distribution if you have not opened these emails for a while.
In compliance with GDPR, the only information that we hold is your name and email address. We will not share these details with anyone and we will only use them to send you this and related, relevant broadcasts. This broadcast is only sent to people who have signed up with our double opt-in system.
Ok, let's get on with it, shall we?

How to set boundaries in life, why you need to stop bragging and how to find more joy in life...

“Boundaries are the lines we draw that mark off our autonomy and that of other people that protect our privacy and that of others. Boundaries allow for intimate connection without dissolving or losing one’s sense of self.” – Amy Bloom
Healthy relationships are such an important part of life, especially during crazy times like these, and I’ve written a fair bit over recent months on topics such as maintaining friendships, having meaningful conversations, creating connection and much more besides.
Every so often, relationships of varying kinds fall apart leaving us heart broken, lonely, and confused.
One important ingredient of having successful relationships is also having healthy boundaries. When we set and keep clear boundaries, our relationships, and our own self, have a much better chance of thriving. Read this article and the references for more on this....

A famous man one said “I’m a stable genius” on Twitter….
“Bragging about yourself violates norms of modesty and politeness – and if you were really competent, your work would speak for itself.” – Adam Grant
These days, on all forms of social media not just Twitter, you can find plenty of self-proclaimed experts, thought leaders, trendsetters, and influencers. Many of whom possess a sort of self-absorbed, self-promotion, that some find annoying.

“Happiness or joy is not something ready-made. It comes from your own actions.” – Dalai Lama.
Without a doubt, we have snapshots of delight and times of happiness and ecstasy. Nevertheless, huge numbers of us are tormented with frequent negative feelings – with all that is going on in the world currently, many of us are outright stuck in the “funk.”
It should be much more of a priority to choose joy above so much of our everyday life activities and routine. Joy is incredibly important for enhancing our ability to navigate the uncertainty of the current life situation many of us face, for our ongoing mental health and for our overall wellbeing.
There is so much going on in our lives right now that we can’t control. Allowing that to consume the bulk of your energy is not only exhausting but also depleting of your happiness. Instead, challenge yourself to consider prioritising joy on a daily basis. The practice of small intentional acts regularly will boost your energy, your motivation, your mindset and best of all put a smile on your face.
How would you discover more bliss in your life? Like virtually anything else, it takes practice to develop more joy. You might need to reset your benchmark. It won’t occur without any forethought, yet here are some things you can do each day to discover more joy and ways of being more joyful.

Using Self-Hypnosis to Maximise Gains Made in the Gym and "Why Don't You Cure Yourself Using Hypnosis?"....
|
If you follow me on social media, it won't have escaped you that I was once a fairly average endurance runner, who then took up weightlifting. This year, with the help of my coach, I have really gone on to a place where I have made what I consider to be major gains, both with the size and shape of my body and with the number of kilograms I am capable of
lifting.
One of the major challenges I find that I have with the greater demands I place upon my body, is that of recovery and maximising the gains made in the gym. Now that I am in my late 40s, recovery is not as fast as it once was, that's for sure. I do my best to eat healthily, I supplement well and diligently, I work on my sleep being deep and regular, and plenty more besides. Importantly though, I also dedicate time to my own psychological well-being and use my mindset and self-hypnosis
understanding to aid my recovery and maximise the gains I make, which I have found to make a major difference.
In this video I talk through the self-hypnosis process that I use and that I share with many of my clients to advance the gains made in the gym and enhance recovery. Enjoy...

Secondly.....
In this video I make reference to an occasion last year when I had to take some time off work due to illness and received a Facebook comment stating “Why don’t you use hypnosis to cure yourself?”
In this video I respond to that question, and I also talk about how many people expect hypnotherapists to be immune to a range of issues and illnesses as a result of using hypnosis and also talk about how realistic it is to expect such invulnerability.
Pandemic and Lockdown Resources:
A range of skills, articles, videos and resources to help during lockdown and during pandemic times in general...
|
Covid Specific:
When the official announcement was made by the WHO stating that the covid-19 coronavirus is now considered a pandemic, I thought I’d offer up a lecture about what us hypnotherapists can credibly do to help. That is, over and beyond the practical official guidelines and offering stress/anxiety related support, I thought I'd share some detailed information about a direct way we (hypnotherapists and self-hypnotists) can help the cause by helping spread quality information and teaching or applying
the use of hypnosis to advance immune functioning.
There are some wonderful iniatives that some hypnotherapists are engaged in currently and I wanted to help support that.
For those of you who are not hypnotherapists, I mentioned some really useful articles in the video too, here are links to those:
I hope there is plenty of use for you here that can be used to advance your immune functioning; plenty of resource, information and application that can help during these challenging times.
From the archives at my personal website, these sessions may also be really relevant to help relieve symptoms for those who sadly contract the virus:
Free Self-Hypnosis Tuition:
I think that self-hypnosis is an incredible skill, a psychological skill that can be imported to most environments of your life and applied to most aspects of your mental and physical well-being.
There are many myths and misconceptions about self-hypnosis, and it is typically taught incorrectly and not in line with scientific findings or with academic literature. It is an easy to apply skill that anyone can learn and achieve great things with and an aim of ours here is to disseminate that understanding to the public.
A great place to start learning is to download my self-hypnosis roadmap if you've not done so already, for free on this page of the college website: Self-Hypnosis Roadmap.
These free resources are all based upon my own research conducted at Bournemouth University and my book on the subject, the Science of Self-Hypnosis.
Other useful articles:
I have spoken to numerous people in the past couple of weeks while we have been in lockdown; parents attempting to home-school their children, some trying to adapt and run a business in a new way, some coping with stress and anxiety that our current situation has triggered – and virtually all of them thinking they are not good enough to do anything different or better:
How to Feel Good Enough.
Now is the time to champion deep and meaningful conversations, that’s what I’m offering next today.
“It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.” – Aristotle
Learning to start and develop meaningful conversations can be a relief to the people who feel isolated during this time. Isolation can spark an anxious voice in your head. Having meaningful conversations can turn down that voice and can shift perspectives and thoughts. Read this article for more on why and how to have more meaningful conversations....
How To Have a Meaningful Conversation.
Other Useful videos:
During one of the more in-depth conversations I had with a friend recently, he reminded me of a time in my life when I attempted to overcome a personal challenge by myself, without any help or support at all, and was failing miserably. He reminded me of the term; “alone we are outnumbered.”
I spend a lot of my time working with people to help them be more positive in a wide number of ways. We all tend to benefit from healthy levels of positivity, of course we do. However…..
One thing I have struggled to come to terms with over the years, is that as a trainer, author and therapist, whose main purpose in those roles has been to help others feel happier or get better, is that many people expect you to be “Mr Whoopee-doo” all the time. They expect that I jump out of bed every morning and burst into a rendition of zip-a-dee-doo-dah regardless of what may be happening in my life.
In this video I talk on the topic of toxic positivity and how it can actually be bad for your mental health to attempt to be overly positive too much of the time.
Video: Do We Need To Have A “Whoopee-Doo” Attitude All The Time? How to Stop Toxic Positivity.
Loneliness is my topic for this video. Or rather, how to experience less loneliness, feel less isolated and feel more of a connection with the world, the people in it and to feel more engaged.
It seems particularly pertinent given that so many of us have been so isolated during lockdown in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Did you know that loneliness may have similar public health outcomes as diabetes or smoking 15 cigarettes a day?
A wave of expert opinion is building towards the acknowledgement of loneliness as a growing epidemic across a number of societies (Western in particular). But this is no ordinary epidemic. It’s not biological, it’s socioeconomic and technological.
In this video I talk about this epidemic and some evidence of what a problem it is, and offer up a number of ways to reduce your feelings of isolation and loneliness.
In recent weeks, my social media output has been filled with video clips of me squatting at the gym, memes about hypnosis, photos from my life and loads of articles from our vaults and some other bits and pieces.
