- Hello and welcome to this week's edition of Adam Up
Happy Friday.
The main aim of this Adam Up regular newsletterI've been sending out for the past two decades has always been to equip readers with stimulating information and psychological tools to aid with varying facets of life as well as helping to concentrate upon and amplify positive shifts we can make in our thinking, our behaviour, our attitudes and perspectives - and it is during these times when so much seems
negative that I want my work to be able to help. Today I want to offer something I consider important.... Hope.
Today, we celebrate hope. An inherent theme that threads it's way through the Star Wars films that I love so much, let me illustrate....
In the Star Wars film Rogue One, Cassian Andor is speaking to Jyn Erso while they are trying to get a meeting with Saw Gerrerra. Cassian says “We’ll give your name and hope that gets us a meeting with Saw.”
"Hope?” Jyn asks.
“Yeah,” Cassian responds.
“Rebellions are built on hope.”
In a later scene in the film, when Jyn is then speaking to the rebellion council, urging them to fight, she says, “We need to capture the Death Star plans if there is any hope of destroying it.”
“You’re asking us to invade an imperial installation based on nothing but hope?” they enquire back.
“Rebellions are built on hope.” She responds, beautifully.
Then the film which began it all, Star Wars IV: A New Hope happens and we know the value of hope from what ensues. One of this week's new videos is all about how to foster hope and the value of it right now. This week I'm promoting the idea of us all doing all we can to build our own rebellions of hope.
In this edition, I have shared again a section specifically dedicated to the coronavirus pandemic and giving a range of resources to help deal with these challenging times.
I have also shared a couple new articles on how to feel good enough and the importance of having more meaningful conversations currently (and hereafter). I also have some other new videos that talk about the power of routine for advancing mental health, and a big focus on the science of laughter and how to laugh more often even in the face of adversity.
Myself, and all of us who work here hope you will all stay safe and healthy wherever you are in this world. If you are a key worker who is still tirelessly working for the benefit of everyone else in isolation, then I salute you and will be thinking of you all when I am stood outside my front door clapping in awe and appreciation on the street each week for our amazing NHS staff.
And just as a reminder, you are receiving this email because you signed up for this ezine, downloaded a course prospectus or attended a course at some point in time. If you no longer wish to receive this weekly hypnosis and personal development ezine, you may unsubscribe by clicking the link at the foot of this email. I only want you to receive it each week if you find it of value and you actually read it.
Also, we delete you from our distribution if you have not opened these emails for a while.
In compliance with GDPR, the only information that we hold is your name and email address. We will not share these details with anyone and we will only use them to send you this and related, relevant broadcasts. This broadcast is only sent to people who have signed up with our double opt-in system.
Ok, let's get on with it, shall we?
Articles: What's New?
How to Feel Good Enough, and How To Have a Meaningful Conversation...
|
I have spoken to numerous people in the past couple of weeks while we have been in lockdown; parents attempting to home-school their children, some trying to adapt and run a business in a new way, some coping
with stress and anxiety that our current situation has triggered – and virtually all of them thinking they are not good enough to do anything different or better. This is not something that is exclusive to these challenging times despite the prevalence right now, it is something I discuss with my patients, my students, peers, family and friends often. I thought I’d write about that on my blog and offer some simple and easily applicable ways to start feeling good enough.
Read the article and all the references in full here:
How to Feel Good Enough.
Now is the time to champion deep and meaningful conversations, that’s what I’m offering next today.
“It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.” – Aristotle
There’s a wide range of emotions that might occur during these uncertain times. They can range from anxiety and trepidation to angst and stress. Oftentimes, there’s a sense of loneliness during these periods of isolation. Wherever you fall on the spectrum, it’s important to note that there are things we have the power to control and those we do not.
As humans, we crave connection, especially with our loved ones. So why don’t we own the fact that we can ignite more purposeful and meaningful conversations during this time? More directly, we can control some of the topics of conversation. If you show up ready and willing to set the tone by asking the type of questions that can lead to reflection and storytelling, you’ve taken a big step in the direction of connection and creating a more meaningful experience of life yourself.
Why is it important?
Learning to start and develop meaningful conversations can be a relief to the people who feel isolated during this time. Isolation can spark an anxious voice in your head. Having meaningful conversations can turn down that voice and can shift perspectives and thoughts.
Deep conversations can attract positivity with much more ease too. It is not everybody’s cup of tea to engage in deep conversations. You can help others find them appealing by making them enjoyable, and making them safe. Read this article for more on why and how to have more meaningful conversations....

The Power of Routine, The Science of Laughter and Finding Hope in These Difficult Times....
|
Many of you may well avoid watching this first video; I mean, for many the very notion of ‘routine’ being is not necessarily the sexiest or most inspiring of topics.
When I suggest to my clients or students that they establish a daily routine, or even a number of daily routines for different aspects of their day, they often start to think of a strict day with no room for fun, down time, playfulness or spontaneity. I could not live without those things in my life. You see, as I get older, I recognise more than ever that there are so
many benefits of having a solid daily routine, and that is what I am speaking about in this video.
I cover how routines create momentum and ensure you get more done. I show how routines enhance mental health, give you more time for yourself, and forge better habits - as backed by solid science. Enjoy this video….
This week's second video is all about laughter. I think now more than ever, we need laughter and joy. I have found aspects of the lockdown to be quite challenging, and one of the things that has really helped me through is sharing laughter with my friends. Whether it is via social media, the telephone or other forms of communications what a tonic laughter
is.
In this video, I discuss the science of laughter and some of the main benefits of it, and I encourage playfulness, child-like fun and talk about how to do more of that in your life to benefit in a wide variety of ways.
There are too many benefits to ignore when it comes to laughing, being more playful and more child-like. Enjoy this video!
Finally, my third video this week is all about hope. Hope is something that is a major theme with my hypnotherapy clients, my students, my friends and family. In this video, my aim is that we hold on to hope and that we celebrate hope.
When working with clients in my therapy rooms who are suffering with depression, one of the areas we sometimes explore and work on is creating positive expectancy if they feel a sense of hopelessness in life.
I speak about instilling hope a great deal in my work and thought I’d record a short video on the topic. Especially when the situation of the current pandemic is creating depression in so many. As already mentioned, I’ve managed to squeeze in a load of Star Wars related goodness into this video too!
Covid-19:
A Range of Amazing Resources For Dealing With The Coronavirus Pandemic...
|
I shared this last time out, and have included it again here in case you missed it....
With the official announcement by the WHO stating that the covid-19 coronavirus is now considered a pandemic, I thought I’d offer up a lecture about what us hypnotherapists can credibly do to help. That is, over and beyond the practical official guidelines and offering stress/anxiety related support, I thought I'd share some detailed information about a direct way we (hypnotherapists and self-hypnotists) can help the cause by helping spread quality information and teaching or applying the use of
hypnosis to advance immune functioning.
So I've made some reference to a number of key studies and good quality evidence to support this application of hypnosis. I have also offered up a couple of specific protocols to use with clients or with yourself using self-hypnosis:
Video Lecture: Advancing Immune Functioning - Support for Hypnotherapists Wanting to Help With Covid-19
There are some wonderful iniatives that some hypnotherapists are engaged in currently and I wanted to help support that.
For those of you who are not hypnotherapists, I mentioned some really useful articles in the video too, here are links to those:
1. Effects of self-hypnosis on immune functioning: The evidence.
2. How To Use Self-Hypnosis To Enhance Your Immune Functioning.
3. Use Self-Hypnosis To Charge Into Battle To Boost Your Immune System.
I hope there is plenty of use for you here that can be used to advance your immune functioning; plenty of resource, information and application that can help during these challenging times.
From the archives at my personal website, these sessions may also be really relevant to help relieve symptoms for those who sadly contract the virus:
1. Using Hypnosis For Cold and Flu Relief With Hypnotic Chicken Soup.
2. Using Self-Hypnosis To Soothe My Sore Throat.
3. Using Self-Hypnosis To Relieve My Chesty Cough.
A couple of weeks ago, I put together a series of hypnosis sessions, recorded brand new instructional videos and additional support audios aimed at helping to deal with some effects of the current Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.
I have put together an online programme that contains the following:
1. Self-hypnosis tuition to be able to employ the skills referred to in the rest of the programme.
2. Newly recorded instructional videos on how to use one the most efficacious behavioural methods for overcoming unwanted habits (habit reversal) as I lead you through the process to use to ensure you stop touching your face and putting your fingers near to your mouth.
3. Two hypnosis audio tracks for you to listen to to advance your immune functioning.
4. Two hypnosis audio tracks to help you deal with unwanted symptoms of the flu.
5. A hypnosis session to harness the power of placebo as well as hypnosis and give you a remedy to your symptoms.
6. Two hypnosis audio sessions to help advance your mood during this challenging time.
7. Two Hypnosis Sessions to help reduce stress and anxiety.
Read this page to read more details about all these components, and to access it all for yourself:
The Hypnotic Coronavirus Resource Pack.
In this video, I champion connection, gratitude, altruism and optimism. I discuss a terrifying panic-stricken 1970s sci-film, a genuine laughter virus that happened in Tanzania in the 1960s, I talk about nobel prize winning strategies for using one infection to kill another, I make lots of references to my favourite authors and researchers, all with the aim of helping you and your mental health during lockdown.
I hope that you and those around you are safe and well right now. I hope there is plenty that will help you here in this video.

My Online Offerings:
For hypnotherapists looking to use this time constructively...
|
Sat here at my desk writing this, the world seems incredibly surreal and the situation we find ourselves in is almost unbelievable. In such a short time a huge amount has happened and
changed.
Public Health England (PHE) have recently shared figures about people’s mental wellbeing during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Their latest data shows more than 4 in 5 (84.2%) people in Britain are worried about the effect that coronavirus is having on their life, with over half (53.1%) saying it was affecting their wellbeing and nearly half (46.9%) reporting high levels of
anxiety.
Source: ONS - Coronavirus and it's social impact on Great Britain, 16th April, 2020.
Right now, some might not be sleeping well, some may be stressed, some are worried about what the future holds, some are struggling to be stuck at home, some are angry with the media or political leaders, some are lonely, some are panicking, some have anxiety and others depression. These are all issues that hypnotherapists are trained to effectively help people with.
The charity MIND has publicly announced a 50% increase in the number of calls in the past two weeks and fellow mental health charity SANE have stated that a mental health crisis is "inevitable" during the coronavirus pandemic and for a long time afterwards.
As humans we are remarkably resilient and adapt to change amazingly well and wonderfully creatively - and there is likely to be more change on it's way. Quality, credible professional hypnotherapists are in need.
We need science to survive!
One of the other things that many have begun to recognise as vitally important during the pandemic, is the importance of science and a solid evidence base informing us. Government policy is being dictated by science where possible and many of us are hearing from leading scientific figures from around the world while we are dealing with coronavirus. Yet there is also a lot of fake news, conspiracy and
misinformation being shared.
This is reflected in a smaller scale within the hypnotherapy field. Now more than ever, anyone considering training in hypnotherapy needs to learn about the science supporting it and not be led my those supporting myth and misinformation that is so prevalent. Knowing the seminal research that supports this field, knowing the latest scientific break-throughs, understanding the research, knowing the authors who
have made the most important scientific contributions, championing effective critical thinking - this are things that are part of the ethos at this college.
This and the fact that I have published peer-reviewed academic papers on my subject are some of the reasons that as college Principal here, I also lecture at the Royal Society of Medicine, at Bournemouth University, the Royal College of Nursing and
beyond.
So many hypnotherapy training schools still teach a conscious/unconscious model of mind, many teach models of therapy that they themselves have invented and have never been researched, many teach by anecdote alone, many teach singular models and limited perspectives that simply will not give you the credibility you want and need if you wish to have a robust education and a credible, effective hypnotherapy
business that doctors, dentists and conventional medical professionals would consider referring their patients to. Many do not teach the limitations of some applications and refuse to give a good critique of what they are teaching. teaching both sides of any approach, debate, philosophy and stance is an essential and central ethos to how we teach hypnotherapy at this college.
We recognise that things are financially tough for many right now. Therefore, we are continuing to offer a 50% discount on our online CPD course fees for a little while longer.
The world needs quality mental health professionals more than ever, and in particular those whose approach is supported with quality research, science and evidence base; the public and conventional healthcare agencies demand it.
If you have questions or queries, then get in touch and I'll always reply as thoroughly and as rapidly as I am able. I hope you and your loved ones are safe and healthy.
During this challenging time and in light of the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic, firstly I understand that qualified hypnotherapists may be challenged financially. Secondly, they may have some additional time on their hands to study and engage in CPD. Thirdly, they may be looking for ways to advance what they can offer when working remotely with clients.
During this time, any qualified hypnotherapist interested in studying one of my advanced online courses, can do so for half the usual fee - you can read more about these courses here:
