- Hello and welcome to the latest edition of Adam Up
It's been a great week here. One reason is that I shared my research with and delivered an online lecture to psychologists at one of the most famous children's hospitals in the world. I worked alongside and in collaboration with another UK hypnotherapy training college and it was wonderful; a great experience that I'll be writing about on the college blog next week.
Another reason is that my gym reopened. I got to train in my gym, socially distanced and swimming in wipes and hand sanitiser, and it was lovely to be back in there, lifting weights with my coaches and friends.
The main aim of this Adam Up periodical newsletter I've been sending out for the past two decades has always been to equip readers with stimulating information and psychological tools to aid with varying facets of life as well as helping to concentrate upon and amplify positive shifts we can make in our thinking, our behaviour, our attitudes and perspectives - and it is during these times when so much seems
negative that I want my work to be able to help.
In particular, I have found myself scrutinising a great many people I see in the public eye with a view to them being well and able to offer hope and inspiration to the world too. This is what led me to have the subject line that I have with this edition today. I'm proposing hypnotherapy for Scooby Doo. On the week of the UK launch of his latest film, I'm also calling upon those in his support network to help him
too. In one of today's videos, I explain why I think Scooby Doo requires hypnotherapy and what I'd do to help him. I also speak about Ariel, Eeyore and others who clearly have issues that need remedying if they are continue being in the public eye as they are.
I've also included a bunch of new videos on how to reduce decision fatigue, bounce back from being knocked down and how to reduce toxic positivity. The new articles being featured and shared here this week cover topics about how to reinvent yourself, how to raise your conscientiousness and how to overcome toxic masculinity.
Myself, and all of us who work here hope you will all stay safe and healthy wherever you are in this world.
And just as a reminder, you are receiving this email because you signed up for this ezine, downloaded a course prospectus or attended a course at some point in time. Articles: What's New?
How to Reinvent Yourself, Raise Your Conscientiousness and Overcome Toxic Masculinity...
|
I wrote in recent weeks about starting afresh in life and considering the current world situation as an opportunity. This also presents an opportunity to reinvent oneself, and that’s what I write about in this first
article…
“You are never too old to reinvent yourself.” – Steve Harvey.
According to a 2020 study published in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution, birds that adapt and innovate are less likely to become extinct. The study conducted by a team of researchers from Canada’s McGill University and CREAF Barcelona, Spain also cited how crows intentionally drop nuts onto roads so cars can crack open the shells and how herons use bait to catch fish. It is wildly
and incredibly creative.
Humans are no different of course.
In times of crisis, and in the longer times after a crisis, nothing is ever the same. Our world permanently changes. We change.
“When things are bad, it’s the best time to reinvent yourself.” – George Lopez. Read the full article that offers numerous ways to do this and includes the references....
Secondly today.... It seems to me that conscientiousness is needed more than ever in the world right now.
“Very few things happen at the right time, and the rest do not happen at all. The conscientious historian will correct these defects.” – Herodotus
If you were to improve just one characteristic to improve your overall life quality – what should you focus on? More than most other things, it is the richness and quality of our relationships that is the best indicator of sustained happiness and health. The word success should really be relegated to a relative and subjective term that has little currency, the research team at Harvard use another term instead; Life Course Functioning. According to the study, the characteristic that presents
itself that is the best indicator of Life Course Functioning it is conscientiousness.
“Conscientious people are apt to see their duty in that which is the most painful course.” – George Eliot.
What is Conscientiousness?
What exactly does the researcher mean by conscientiousness? According to Psychology Today, Conscientiousness is a fundamental personality trait—one of the Big Five—that reflects the tendency to be responsible, organised, hard-working, goal-directed, and to adhere to norms and rules. It is the capacity for self-motivation, organisation and planning.
It includes characteristic such as being efficient, effective, neat, and systematic, also including such elements as self-discipline, carefulness, thoroughness, self-organisation, deliberation (the tendency to think carefully before acting), and need for achievement. Conscientious individuals are generally hard working and reliable.
“People high in conscientiousness get better grades in high school and college; they commit fewer crimes; and they stay married longer.” – Paul Tough.
Finally... According to the Australian sociologist R. W. Connell (the one who originally coined the phrase), the phrase “toxic masculinity” refers to when a man engages in behaviours that are traditionally considered “masculine” that are damaging to those around him, society at large or even himself. According to her definition, the term especially refers to
acts of physical violence perpetrated to maintain male dominance over women.
Other scholars, however, have taken broader definitions of the term. Some have extended it to refer to any behaviours engaged in by a human male that is damaging to anyone, including the man himself. This article gives examples of toxic masculinity and how they are harmful to men, then goes on to show how to reduce and combat it within yourself:

Reduce Decision Fatigue, Bounce Back from Being Knocked Down, How to Reduce Toxic Positivity and Why I Think Scooby-Doo Needs Hypnotherapy....
|
In this first video, I talk about a subject I have written about often.... Decision fatigue is one reason that you may well give in when your child asks for one of the chocolate bars or treats lined up next to the till when you
go to pay for your shopping. You have made a bunch of decisions as you’ve travelled through the supermarket, decision fatigue has set in…..
In decision making and psychology literature, decision fatigue refers to the decline in the quality of decisions made by all of us following a lot of decision making. In this video I explain the science behind decision fatigue and I also give a number of ways that you can reduce it effectively. Enjoy…
Video: Scientific Ways to Reduce Decision Fatigue.
Onto our second video this week... I’m certain that many of us have experienced being knocked down or knocked back in one way or another. Also likely that we’ve all seen recently that sometimes life can be messy, challenging and even ugly! Sometimes, life can feel like a great big bully that corners us and hits us with punch after punch. Sometimes, that is reality and we may need to learn
how to roll with those punches. That is what this video is focusing on.
Here’s the thing, if you never got knocked down, you would have no success stories. You are never defined by what knocked you down, but always defined by the character you had while getting back up! Life is meant to be lived, not to coast through unscathed. Get out and be the amazingly awesome person that you are!
This video contains a number of strategies that you can use when life doesn’t go your way. If you have been knocked down, these are ways to get back up again and become stronger than before. Enjoy…
Video: How to Bounce Back From Being Knocked Down.
Next up... I spend a lot of my time working with people to help them be more positive in a wide number of ways. We all tend to benefit from healthy levels of positivity, of course we do. However…..
One thing I have struggled to come to terms with over the years, is that as a trainer, author and therapist, whose main purpose in those roles has been to help others feel happier or get better, is that many people expect you to be “Mr Whoopee-doo” all the time. They expect that I jump out of bed every morning and burst into a rendition of zip-a-dee-doo-dah regardless of what may be
happening in my life.
In this video I talk on the topic of toxic positivity and how it can actually be bad for your mental health to attempt to be overly positive too much of the time.
Finally...This week Warner Brothers pictures have released the latest Scooby Doo film entitled Scoob and is available to purchase on Sky Tv here in the UK, and rather poignantly as far as I am concerned, the film covers some of Scooby-Doo’s back story.
This video is not just for you regular viewers, it is also an open invitation to Fred, Daphne, Velma, and Shaggy to perhaps get Scooby into therapy or at least; let’s get an intervention under way and get him on the road to well-being.
I’d like to work with Scooby Doo. He clearly has some issues and in this video I offer up my rationale for him needing help and what I’d recommend. Enjoy….
The Ultimate Pandemic Skill:
Learn Self-Hypnosis...
|
I'm biased, but I think that self-hypnosis is an incredible skill, a psychological skill that can be imported to most environments of your life and applied to most aspects of your mental and physical well-being.
There are many myths and misconceptions about self-hypnosis, and it is typically taught incorrectly and not in line with scientific findings or with academic literature. It is an easy to apply skill that anyone can learn and achieve great things with and an aim of ours here is to disseminate that understanding to the public.
Free Self-Hypnosis Tuition:
A great place to start learning is to download my self-hypnosis roadmap if you've not done so already, for free on this page of the college website: Self-Hypnosis
Roadmap.
These free resources are all based upon my own research conducted at Bournemouth University and my book on the subject, the Science of Self-Hypnosis.
My Online Self-Hypnosis Educational Programme:
I have some exciting news. In the past couple of weeks, we have added many additional resources and additional comprehensive materials to our online self-hypnosis educational training programme.
Anyone who ever invests in this programme gets all the updates for free for life, so if you already own this programme, you'll have lots of extra study materials to read, tune in to and apply to your life. If you are yet to invest and are considering, then I simply wanted you to know that it offers even more value now; and the investment fee has remained the same as it ever was (less than one hundred
pounds).
The programme has many, many hours of video footage from classes where I have taught the most evidence-based and scientific approach to self-hypnosis in a variety of locations. It also includes an accompanying manual, access to the slides used in class, handouts, a full audio version of my book The Science of Self-Hypnosis and an amazing guide on how to use self-hypnosis to create a wide range of hypnotic
phenomena (hypnotic effects) upon yourself. You can read all about the programme at the specific web page of the college website.
Let me tell you about some of what has just been added though:
We've just added several hours of education and tuition about specific clinical applications of self-hypnosis, including:
- How to enhance mental imagery using self-hypnosis.
- Altering perception of skin temperature.
- Several techniques for using self-hypnosis for specialist forms of relaxation and recovery.
- Using self-hypnosis to reduce anxiety and enhance mental calmness.
- Updating your thinking patterns with self-hypnosis.
- A range of mental rehearsal strategies.
- Advancing optimism with self-hypnosis.
- Wide range of ways to use self-hypnosis to elevate mood.
- Advancing quality of sleep with self-hypnosis.
- Combining mindfulness with self-hypnosis.
- A variety of approaches to reduce pain using self-hypnosis.
- Create your own glove anaesthesia with self-hypnosis.
- Advance the placebo effect by applying self-hypnosis.
- Using self-hypnosis to overcome unwanted habits (including stopping smoking, overeating and other habits).
- Reducing blood pressure and hypertension with self-hypnosis.
- Advancing healing with self-hypnosis.
- Using self-hypnosis for alertness and heightened focus.
- More besides.
It makes for a very comprehensive programme indeed.
I believe that self-hypnosis is an amazing skill to acquire and develop, especially during the current pandemic, I hope you find these resources of great value.
This week, my social media output has been filled with video clips of me squatting 200kg at the side of my house, memes about hypnosis, photos from my life and loads of articles from our vaults and some other bits and pieces.
