- Hello and welcome to the latest edition of Adam Up
It's July! The Summer is here. During lockdown we have been renovating our garden and while it has been like a building site, it was blisteringly hot weather. Now, upon completion as I seek to bask in the efforts of my labour, it is grey and rainy. Pah!
The main aim of this Adam Up regular newsletter I've been sending out for the past two decades has always been to equip readers with stimulating information and psychological tools to aid with varying facets of life as well as helping to concentrate upon and amplify positive shifts we can make in our thinking, our behaviour, our attitudes and perspectives - and it is during these times when so much seems negative that
I want my work to be able to help.
Therefore you might think that the subject line to this edition is a bit odd - Can Positivity Be Toxic!? - I certainly think so. Because of the nature of my work, I have a lot of expectation placed upon me to always be positive and to act out a brand of immovable positivity that is virtually im[possible to be. I write about this today and have a number of other articles discussing how to start afresh after a crisis, how to overcome problematic levels of inhibition and also how to protect your mental health from social media - the
statistics and research findings I cite in that article are terrifying (especially from the perspective of a Father who's children are likely to discover social media soon!).
I've also included a bunch of new videos on how to combat loneliness, reduce materialism, have meaningful conversations and one of my favourite and most covered subjects... Expressing your individuality. I've started using a magic wand in my videos for reasons I'll share in upcoming editions.
In this edition, I have shared again the section specifically dedicated to the coronavirus pandemic and giving a range of resources to help deal with these challenging times. This will be the final time I'll share those for now.
Myself, and all of us who work here hope you will all stay safe and healthy wherever you are in this world. If you are a key worker who is still tirelessly working for the benefit of everyone else in varying forms and levels of lockdown, then I salute you and thank you for all that you do.
And just as a reminder, you are receiving this email because you signed up for this ezine, downloaded a course prospectus or attended a course at some point in time. If you no longer wish to receive this weekly hypnosis and personal development ezine, you may unsubscribe by clicking the link at the foot of this email. I only want you to receive it each week if you find it of value and you actually read it.
Also, we delete you from our distribution if you have not opened these emails for a while.
In compliance with GDPR, the only information that we hold is your name and email address. We will not share these details with anyone and we will only use them to send you this and related, relevant broadcasts. This broadcast is only sent to people who have signed up with our double opt-in system.
Ok, let's get on with it, shall we?
Articles: What's New?
How to Start Afresh, Overcome Inhibition, Protect Your Mental Health From Social Media and Overcome Toxic Positivity...
|
As the world is undergoing a great many changes currently, so are many people’s lives. To the point whereby many are starting afresh in a variety of ways. That’s what I write about in this first article…
“You may not always have a comfortable life and you will not always be able to solve all of the world’s problems at once but don’t ever underestimate the importance you can have because history has shown us that courage can be contagious and hope can take on a life of its own” – Michelle Obama.
Coronavirus is on everyone’s minds and has become part of most people’s lives and one can’t help but think that life is changing in a strange and surreal manner.
People are suffering in a variety of ways, many every day activities have come to a grinding halt and many people have lost their jobs, lost their businesses or had to adapt their roles greatly in order to cope.
For many, this is the time to think about starting afresh and perhaps to start hatching plans. Read the article in full here...
Secondly today.... Most of us use social media of one kind or another these days, and all of us are likely to have been upset, troubled or affected detrimentally in some way as a result of it. Social media is a mouthpiece for so much of the modern world we live in, and it can have a prooufn impact upon us in a range of problematic ways if we are not
careful.
“Social media has given us this idea that we should all have a posse of friends when in reality, if we have one or two really good friends, we are lucky.” – Brene Brown.
Read this full article for the references, the science and research referred to, and a wide range of ways to protect your mental health from some of the perils of social media....
Next up, I write about inhibition and the often debilitating effect it can have upon us.
“You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.” – Mae West.
Overcoming inhibition could make a major impact in your life and help lead to a more successful experience of life. Overcoming inhibition? You may not have had the inclination or the time to think about it, but it lies in your ability to ignore other people’s opinions about how you should lead your life. Instead of nurturing our own lives, many of us spend much of our lives trying to live someone else’s dream and when we fail to live up to people’s expectations, we become frustrated, angry, and
depressed.
Many of us are forced (often by our own selves) to believe that thinking outside the four walls of the box only results in creating errors or making mistakes, yet there are those people who are brave enough to go against the grain to live their lives their own way and that is one secret ingredient of leading a happy life that I am exploring in this article, read in full here...
Finally... There have been times when I’ve really struggled during lockdown. Having young children, running a business in a tough financial climate, being prone to depression, not being able to see close friends, attend my gym, run my classes, carry out planned research projects, and much, much more besides. Yet in my role as therapist, trainer and as someone who
seeks to disseminate research and content about how to prevail psychologically in life, there is a certain level of expectancy that is placed upon me (by myself as much as others) to remain positive and maintain a certain level of positivity regardless of life conditions.
It is this seeming obsession with being positive at all costs that I write about in this final article for this edition...
“When we push aside difficult emotions in order to embrace false positivity, we lose our capacity to develop deep skills to help us deal with the world as it is, not as we wish it to be.” – Susan David.

Be less Materialistic, Combat Loneliness, Have More Meaningful Conversations and Express Your Individuality....
|
In this first video I talk about why letting materialism be the main driver in your life can be quite destructive and problematic. I then go on to talk about a number of ways to transition yourself to being less materialistic. I go
on to discuss gratitude and how it can help all of us step off the consumption treadmill.
There’ll be plenty for anyone to benefit from this video, but especially those who gauge life success in purely financial terms, and those looking for more connection in life. Enjoy..
Loneliness is my topic for this second video. Or rather, how to experience less loneliness, feel less isolated and feel more of a connection with the world, the people in it and to feel more engaged.
It seems particularly pertinent given that so many of us have been so isolated during lockdown in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Did you know that loneliness may have similar public health outcomes as diabetes or smoking 15 cigarettes a day?
A wave of expert opinion is building towards the acknowledgement of loneliness as a growing epidemic across a number of societies (Western in particular). But this is no ordinary epidemic. It’s not biological, it’s socioeconomic and technological.
In this video I talk about this epidemic and some evidence of what a problem it is, and offer up a number of ways to reduce your feelings of isolation and loneliness.
Next up... Now is the time to champion deep and meaningful conversations, that’s what I’m doing here today (as well as doing my best not to discuss the fact that filming for season 2 of the Mandalorian has just resumed and I’m wearing my t-shirt of the show).
Learning to start and develop meaningful conversations can be a relief to the people who feel isolated during this time. Deep conversations can attract positivity. One way or another though, deep conversations can act as meditation and medication. They can be a tonic for a troubled mind and can make people happier.
People who have more substantive conversations with others report a greater sense of well-being than those who only engage in small talk, according to research led by Matthias Mehl, a psychology professor at the University of Arizona.
In this video, I share 5 actionable tips that can help you create deeper, more meaningful conversations. Enjoy…
Individuality is the theme of this final video. One positive I’m encouraging people to take from the events of this year – is that We all have a chance to start afresh, to create our own new normal right now, and truly express our individuality and uniqueness.
This is a topic that I have fondly written about and spoken about for the past 20 years and is close to my heart.
Confucius once said “What the superior man seeks is in himself; what the small man seeks is in others.” And that frames this video nicely, enjoy..
The Ultimate Lockdown Skill:
Learn Self-Hypnosis...
|
I'm biased, but I think that self-hypnosis is an incredible skill, a psychological skill that can be imported to most environments of your life and applied to most aspects of your mental and physical well-being.
There are many myths and misconceptions about self-hypnosis, and it is typically taught incorrectly and not in line with scientific findings or with academic literature. It is an easy to apply skill that anyone can learn and achieve great things with and an aim of ours here is to disseminate that understanding to the public.
Free Self-Hypnosis Tuition:
A great place to start learning is to download my self-hypnosis roadmap if you've not done so already, for free on this page of the college website: Self-Hypnosis
Roadmap.
These free resources are all based upon my own research conducted at Bournemouth University and my book on the subject, the Science of Self-Hypnosis.
My Online Self-Hypnosis Educational Programme:
I have some exciting news. In the past couple of weeks, we have added many additional resources and additional comprehensive materials to our online self-hypnosis educational training programme.
Anyone who ever invests in this programme gets all the updates for free for life, so if you already own this programme, you'll have lots of extra study materials to read, tune in to and apply to your life. If you are yet to invest and are considering, then I simply wanted you to know that it offers even more value now; and the investment fee has remained the same as it ever was (less than one hundred
pounds).
The programme has many, many hours of video footage from classes where I have taught the most evidence-based and scientific approach to self-hypnosis in a variety of locations. It also includes an accompanying manual, access to the slides used in class, handouts, a full audio version of my book The Science of Self-Hypnosis and an amazing guide on how to use self-hypnosis to create a wide range of hypnotic
phenomena (hypnotic effects) upon yourself. You can read all about the programme at the specific web page of the college website.
Let me tell you about some of what has just been added though:
We've just added several hours of education and tuition about specific clinical applications of self-hypnosis, including:
- How to enhance mental imagery using self-hypnosis.
- Altering perception of skin temperature.
- Several techniques for using self-hypnosis for specialist forms of relaxation and recovery.
- Using self-hypnosis to reduce anxiety and enhance mental calmness.
- Updating your thinking patterns with self-hypnosis.
- A range of mental rehearsal strategies.
- Advancing optimism with self-hypnosis.
- Wide range of ways to use self-hypnosis to elevate mood.
- Advancing quality of sleep with self-hypnosis.
- Combining mindfulness with self-hypnosis.
- A variety of approaches to reduce pain using self-hypnosis.
- Create your own glove anaesthesia with self-hypnosis.
- Advance the placebo effect by applying self-hypnosis.
- Using self-hypnosis to overcome unwanted habits (including stopping smoking, overeating and other habits).
- Reducing blood pressure and hypertension with self-hypnosis.
- Advancing healing with self-hypnosis.
- Using self-hypnosis for alertness and heightened focus.
- More besides.
It makes for a very comprehensive programme indeed.
I believe that self-hypnosis is an amazing skill to acquire and develop, especially during the current pandemic, I hope you find these resources of great value.
Covid-19:
A Range of Amazing Resources For Dealing With The Coronavirus Pandemic...
|
I shared this last time out, and have included it again here in case you missed it....
With the official announcement by the WHO stating that the covid-19 coronavirus is now considered a pandemic, I thought I’d offer up a lecture about what us hypnotherapists can credibly do to help. That is, over and beyond the practical official guidelines and offering stress/anxiety related support, I thought I'd share some detailed information about a direct way we (hypnotherapists and self-hypnotists) can help the cause by helping spread quality information and teaching or applying the use of
hypnosis to advance immune functioning.
So I've made some reference to a number of key studies and good quality evidence to support this application of hypnosis. I have also offered up a couple of specific protocols to use with clients or with yourself using self-hypnosis:
Video Lecture: Advancing Immune Functioning - Support for Hypnotherapists Wanting to Help With Covid-19
There are some wonderful iniatives that some hypnotherapists are engaged in currently and I wanted to help support that.
For those of you who are not hypnotherapists, I mentioned some really useful articles in the video too, here are links to those:
1. Effects of self-hypnosis on immune functioning: The evidence.
2. How To Use Self-Hypnosis To Enhance Your Immune Functioning.
3. Use Self-Hypnosis To Charge Into Battle To Boost Your Immune System.
I hope there is plenty of use for you here that can be used to advance your immune functioning; plenty of resource, information and application that can help during these challenging times.
From the archives at my personal website, these sessions may also be really relevant to help relieve symptoms for those who sadly contract the virus:
1. Using Hypnosis For Cold and Flu Relief With Hypnotic Chicken Soup.
2. Using Self-Hypnosis To Soothe My Sore Throat.
3. Using Self-Hypnosis To Relieve My Chesty Cough.
A couple of weeks ago, I put together a series of hypnosis sessions, recorded brand new instructional videos and additional support audios aimed at helping to deal with some effects of the current Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.
I have put together an online programme that contains the following:
1. Self-hypnosis tuition to be able to employ the skills referred to in the rest of the programme.
2. Newly recorded instructional videos on how to use one the most efficacious behavioural methods for overcoming unwanted habits (habit reversal) as I lead you through the process to use to ensure you stop touching your face and putting your fingers near to your mouth.
3. Two hypnosis audio tracks for you to listen to to advance your immune functioning.
4. Two hypnosis audio tracks to help you deal with unwanted symptoms of the flu.
5. A hypnosis session to harness the power of placebo as well as hypnosis and give you a remedy to your symptoms.
6. Two hypnosis audio sessions to help advance your mood during this challenging time.
7. Two Hypnosis Sessions to help reduce stress and anxiety.
Read this page to read more details about all these components, and to access it all for yourself:
The Hypnotic Coronavirus Resource Pack.
In this video, I champion connection, gratitude, altruism and optimism. I discuss a terrifying panic-stricken 1970s sci-film, a genuine laughter virus that happened in Tanzania in the 1960s, I talk about nobel prize winning strategies for using one infection to kill another, I make lots of references to my favourite authors and researchers, all with the aim of helping you and your mental health during lockdown.
I hope that you and those around you are safe and well right now. I hope there is plenty that will help you here in this video.
