- Hello and welcome to this week's edition of Adam Up
It's a Wednesday, it's the hump day, and for the first time in 20 something years of writing and sending out this regular Adam Up broadcast, I am sending out an edition on a day that is not Thursday or Friday. The current pandemic situation is such that the kind of usual rationale for sending out this regular broadcast on certain days does not seem to apply, and so I'm sending it out on a Wednesday as the
rulebook of regular life has been torn in half and chucked out of the window!
If you've followed my social media feed, you'll have seen that I have cancelled the UK Hypnosis Convention this year. I've had to cancel some courses, and obviously my clinic is closed but am still working with people online for therapy and leading trainings online. So much is new and different and challenging.
In light of these times we find ourselves in, and when much seems out of our control, my aim is to share some information and perspective that helps us to focus on those things we can and are able to control. For me that is helping people with their mindset and mental health as much as I am able.
The main aim of this Adam Up regular newsletter has always been to equip readers with stimulating information and psychological tools to aid with varying facets of life as well as helping to concentrate upon and amplify positive shifts we can make in our thinking, our behaviour, our attitudes and perspectives - and it is during these times when so much seems negative that I want my work to be able to help.
In this edition, I have a section specifically dedicated to the coronavirus pandemic and giving a mass of resources to help deal with these challenging times. As well as resources from me, I have included links to a programme used by NASA astronauts to deal with self-isolation made available by the University that created the programme, and I've included resources being made available for free from Dr Donald Meichenbaum, the founder of Stress Inoculation Therapy. I think you'll really benefit
from these.
In this edition, I have also shared a few new articles on how to adapt to change, how to engage in self-reflection and how to stop needing instant gratification. I also have some new videos that further the topic of reflection and how to be more creative and enhance your imagination to benefit many aspects of your life.
Myself, and all of us who work here hope you will all stay safe and healthy wherever you are in this world. If you are a key worker who is still tirelessly working for the benefit of everyone else in isolation, then I salute you and will be thinking of you all when I am stood outside my front door clapping in awe and appreciation on the street this evening for our amazing NHS staff.
And just as a reminder, you are receiving this email because you signed up for this ezine, downloaded a course prospectus or attended a course at some point in time. If you no longer wish to receive this weekly hypnosis and personal development ezine, you may unsubscribe by clicking the link at the foot of this email. I only want you to receive it each week if you find it of value and you actually read it. Also, we delete you from our distribution if you have not opened these emails for a
while.
In compliance with GDPR, the only information that we hold is your name and email address. We will not share these details with anyone and we will only use them to send you this and related, relevant broadcasts. This broadcast is only sent to people who have signed up with our double opt-in system.
Ok, let's get on with it, shall we?
Articles: What's New?
How to Adapt to Change, Engage in Effective Self-Reflection and Reduce Your Need for Instant Gratification....
|
Now more than ever, we are facing change; new circumstances, new challenges, and new uncertainties.
“Change has a bad reputation in our society. But it isn’t all bad – not by any means. In fact, change is necessary for life – to keep us moving, to keep us growing, to keep us interested. Imagine life without change. It will be static, boring, dull.”– Dr. Dennis O’Grady
The one thing that never changes about life, is that there is change. So, finding ways to adapt is a skill worth developing. Especially with all that is going on in the world currently and we are experiencing more change than ever.
According to CCL (Center for Creative Leadership) research, the most frequently cited success factor for successful people was the ability to develop or adapt. So how can you better adapt to change? Read this full article for some helpful tips and the full research references:
How to Adapt to Change.
“Self-Reflection is one of the most underused yet powerful tools for success.” – Richard Carlson
“Who are you” is one of the more polite, derogatory chants commonly heard in football stadiums when opposition fans want to question the ability of their opposition team or selected players within that team. I regularly attend Premier league football games with my son and it is a chant we are very familiar with!
Some dictionaries even suggest it may have been in common use in the mid 19th century in London, again as a means of insult to the person on the receiving end of the chant. So, in posing this question “Who are you…” not intended as a derogatory question or even a chant; however consider it as a means of provoking yourself to have a think about who you really are, or indeed who we, as humans really are and why it can be a source of great help and comfort in times of trial to know who we
really are.
In these days of isolation and social distancing, the opportunity for self-reflection is greatly enhanced. On the one hand, increased self-reflection can become a useful positive enquiry that allows us to become more comfortable with who we really are at our core or essence.
Read this full article for information on why self-reflection is so important and how to effectively engage in it:
The Power of Self-Reflection.
At dinner earlier this week, my children and I were discussing the things we are going to do when the lockdown has ended, and we realised how impatiently we wanted lockdown to be over and how much we really wanted to do those things. Usually, we’d get to do all of those things on a whim, and we can derive instant-gratification. I think many are finding it challenging not to be able to have the instant gratification that is usually inherent
in our lives.
Maybe this is an opportunity to overcome that seeming need for instant gratification?
“We live in a world of instant gratification, the world of the quick fix.” – Rachael Taylor
We want it all. Now. As quickly as possible. And it is not surprising.
We are surrounded with things that are designed to deliver instant “happiness”: fast food chains deliver instant meals, mobile apps deliver instant notifications, home equipment delivers instant solutions.
Almost all the stuff around us is available instantly. And it is so convenient. We got used to have it all now. We acquired a habit that is not so easy to get rid of, but it makes many of us express zero tolerance towards things we have to wait for. Why bother waiting if we can have it all now?
Losing weight has become “easier” and “quicker” than ever. “Just follow our link to download this weight loss programme, and in just 2 weeks you will see incredible results”. What a miracle! What a magic! The only thing that they don’t tell us is that the quicker we lose weight, often the quicker we gain it back even with some “surplus”. Evidence tends to suggest weight reduction should involve a long-term strategy to be really
effective.
“Earn six-figure sum in a month. Here is how…”, “Learn foreign language in just 3 weeks”, “Get into an ideal shape in just 2 weeks”. There are countless examples I could recite right now, you’ve seen them too.
But do we actually benefit from some of these promises that are often hollow? The answer is probably obvious to all of us when reading something like this in the cold light of day. We realise that there must be something wrong about all that stuff and that we don’t actually benefit from it, but we still buy-in. We know better, so why is that? Why does the phrase “overnight success” makes our heart beat faster? Why do promises of “getting
thousands in a month” increase the adrenaline in our body? Because we often seek to get immediate rewards and results. Many of us are conditioned that way. And those “hollow promises” are the perfect food for our inner “instant-gratification monster”.
Read this article which explains how to delay gratification effectively, and the benefits of doing so:

The Power of Self-Reflective Practice and How to Become More Creative to Benefit your Life in Many Ways....
|
In this first video, I talk about what creativity actually is and offer a wide range of ways to advance and enhance your own creativity in order that you can achieve more and be more effective in life. I also
include a wide number of ways to help improve your imagination and give a detailed self-hypnosis process and session for you to engage in to help with your creativity. Enjoy!
This second video is based upon something that I teach on my hypnotherapy diploma courses that most therapists, teachers and other professional engage in, the process of reflective practice. In this video however, I’m talking about how to engage in self-reflection to effectively develop as you navigate through life.
Reflective practice is usually associated with learning from experience, and is viewed as an important strategy for anyone who seeks to embrace life long learning.
In this video, I show how the act of reflection is a way of promoting our own development. Engaging in reflective practice is also associated with closing the gap between theory and practice. We often know and understand theoretically what we want to do, but sometimes fail to practically do it, or to take the necessary action required to do it.
I talk about what self-reflection is, how you benefit from it in life, and I also share a number of ways to engage in it, some relaxed methods and some systematic, evidence based approaches, including my own system.
Covid-19:
A Range of Amazing Resources For Dealing With The Coronavirus Pandemic...
|
I shared this last time out, and have included it again here in case you missed it....
With the official announcement by the WHO stating that the covid-19 coronavirus is now considered a pandemic, I thought I’d offer up a lecture about what us hypnotherapists can credibly do to help. That is, over and beyond the practical official guidelines and offering stress/anxiety related support, I thought I'd share some detailed information about a direct way we (hypnotherapists and self-hypnotists) can help the cause by helping spread quality information and teaching or applying the use of
hypnosis to advance immune functioning.
So I've made some reference to a number of key studies and good quality evidence to support this application of hypnosis. I have also offered up a couple of specific protocols to use with clients or with yourself using self-hypnosis:
Video Lecture: Advancing Immune Functioning - Support for Hypnotherapists Wanting to Help With Covid-19
There are some wonderful iniatives that some hypnotherapists are engaged in currently and I wanted to help support that.
For those of you who are not hypnotherapists, I mentioned some really useful articles in the video too, here are links to those:
1. Effects of self-hypnosis on immune functioning: The evidence.
2. How To Use Self-Hypnosis To Enhance Your Immune Functioning.
3. Use Self-Hypnosis To Charge Into Battle To Boost Your Immune System.
I hope there is plenty of use for you here that can be used to advance your immune functioning; plenty of resource, information and application that can help during these challenging times.
From the archives at my personal website, these sessions may also be really relevant to help relieve symptoms for those who sadly contract the virus:
1. Using Hypnosis For Cold and Flu Relief With Hypnotic Chicken Soup.
2. Using Self-Hypnosis To Soothe My Sore Throat.
3. Using Self-Hypnosis To Relieve My Chesty Cough.
A couple of weeks ago, I put together a series of hypnosis sessions, recorded brand new instructional videos and additional support audios aimed at helping to deal with some effects of the current Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.
I have put together an online programme that contains the following:
1. Self-hypnosis tuition to be able to employ the skills referred to in the rest of the programme.
2. Newly recorded instructional videos on how to use one the most efficacious behavioural methods for overcoming unwanted habits (habit reversal) as I lead you through the process to use to ensure you stop touching your face and putting your fingers near to your mouth.
3. Two hypnosis audio tracks for you to listen to to advance your immune functioning.
4. Two hypnosis audio tracks to help you deal with unwanted symptoms of the flu.
5. A hypnosis session to harness the power of placebo as well as hypnosis and give you a remedy to your symptoms.
6. Two hypnosis audio sessions to help advance your mood during this challenging time.
7. Two Hypnosis Sessions to help reduce stress and anxiety.

In this video, I champion connection, gratitude, altruism and optimism. I discuss a terrifying panic-stricken 1970s sci-film, a genuine laughter virus that happened in Tanzania in the 1960s, I talk about nobel prize winning strategies for using one infection to kill another, I make lots of references to my favourite authors and researchers, all with the aim of helping you and your mental health during lockdown.
I hope that you and those around you are safe and well right now. I hope there is plenty that will help you here in this video.

How to Cope with Self-isolation Like an Astronaut:
If you are looking for something to do in self-isolation during the coronavirus pandemic then you might be interested in completing the same training in emotional resilience used by astronauts.
The PATH Program is an online course developed at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, USA. During the pandemic, while a lot of us are locked down, they have made available free of charge to the general public.
The authors of the PATH programme thought that people struggling to cope with the stress of lockdown during the pandemic might benefit from the same kind of psychological techniques used by NASA to prepare astronauts for a period of time in space. It has also been tested on researchers stationed in the Antarctic, another group who face the stress of isolation in a challenging
environment.
He recently told The Guardian newspaper:
"It’s challenging to be isolated with a small group of people and to not be able to get away. Outer space and your own living room might be drastically different physically, but emotionally the stressors can be the same."
You can sign up for an account and access the training here.
If you've spent time in class with me, you'll know I
often refer to Donald Meichenbaum, Ph.D, the man behind stress inoculation training.
In response to the pandemic, Dr. Meichenbaum, has made the Action Plans of his book Roadmap to Resilience available online for FREE.
The Action Plans which provide various ways to bolster resilience and are available in APPENDIX A and APPENDIX B of the book.
Dr. Meichenbaum has also composed an ADDENDUM of specific ways to cope with the Coronavirus.
