- Hello and welcome to this week's edition of Adam Up
It's a Friday night edition of Adam Up..... I am going to be spending this weekend in class teaching a two-day certification course in sports hypnosis. In my notes, I gave myself a reminder to mention my friend William Sichel who I have worked with in the past too - William has just completed a 1000 mile race in Athens and in the process achieved his 750th endurance running record. He is quite spectacular with his
endeavours despite being so modest and humble about it all.
The reason i mention him briefly in my class is to highlight how to use self-hypnosis while running, why belief is so important in sporting performance and to illustrate the effect of mind upon the body in a number of ways. However, he also inspired much of what I'm sharing today that I've written and recorded in recent weeks.
I have three new articles for you today that I think are perfect to consider and apply now that we have moved in January. I write about getting over the hump that we face at the end of January, about how you should consider taking a step back to move forward, and then also write about how to advance your imagination, something people take for granted and simply do not exercise
enough.
I have a couple of new videos for you today also - one that gives some instruction on how to avoid burnout, and another that shows you how and why to embrace impermanence, a favourite topic of mine.
In addition to all this new stuff I'm sharing with you this week, I also have a new evidence-based hypnosis meme for you.
And just as a reminder, you are receiving this email because you signed up for this ezine, downloaded a course prospectus or attended a course at some point in time. If you no longer wish to receive this weekly hypnosis and personal development ezine, you may unsubscribe by clicking the link at the foot of this email. I only want you to receive it each week if you find it of value and you actually read it. Also, we delete you from
our distribution if you have not opened these emails for a while.
In compliance with GDPR, the only information that we hold is your name and email address. We will not share these details with anyone and we will only use them to send you this and related, relevant broadcasts. This broadcast is only sent to people who have signed up with our double opt-in system.
Ok, let's get on with it, shall we?

Embrace Impermanence, and Avoiding Burnout!
|
Embrace impermanence; that is my message in this video, and I’m offering up a basic guide on how to embrace impermanence as a way of advancing your enjoyment of life.
“It is not impermanence that makes us suffer. What makes us suffer is wanting things to be permanent when they are not.” – Nhat Hanh.
With so many people I encounter, they firmly believe that nothing is changing in their life, it feels that way, seems that way, and yes for many of us, sometimes it feels as though nothing changes. Yet at other times if feels as though nothing stays the same, life is volatile and we attempt to control the uncontrollable. In truth, nothing is permanent and yet so many of us seem to be in pursuit of something as if it is (permanent). Life is transient by nature, impermanent. We grow, we evolve, we
embrace impermanence.
In this video I explain why to do so and how to embrace impermanence in order to advance your experience of life.
Burnout is a painful topic to talk about because as therapists, we like to be upbeat and positive and also be a good example of someone who is together. Burnout is very real and problematic, though it is avoidable with the right understanding, awareness and tools. This video offers up some of the most important tools and heightens awareness of this topic.
One of the things I recognise a lot with the hypnotherapists I mentor to develop their businesses, and those I supervise, is how crazy busy they are. They are under pressure too, stressed and sometimes struggling to deal with it all and earn a healthy living.
It is a recurring theme among individuals in caring and therapeutic fields; that of practitioner burnout. Therapists, coaches, and wellness professionals are continually faced with job stresses including clients, running and growing the business, (often in isolation i.e. Private Practice). On top of this, by nature of our heart-based professions, we are continually exposed to emotionally draining situations and the
numerous emotional vulnerabilities that form a large part of our profession. This video offers some ways to heighten awareness of burnout and how to prevent it from occurring.

Get over the hump, take a step back and improve your imagination ...
|
Every January plenty of people set resolutions and goals to move ahead, become a changed person, develop in all kinds of ways and much more besides.
Many think back upon the last 365 days and consider what ‘might have been’ and resolve that the upcoming 365 will be completely different. This will be the year. “New Year, New Me,” right?
Unfortunately, a few weeks into the New Year, when the dust has settled after the initial euphoric energy we were endowed with when the clock chimed midnight on January the 1st, things seem harder to maintain – our body is aching and adjusting from the gym or new exercise regime, the new diet seems so dull, the new routines are feeling laborious and we are now on the verge of or have already started actively finding excuses for your procrastination. Welcome to the end of January hump. The hump
is how many people explain Wednesdays each week, how many of us experience the effort required to keep momentum going; and many of us stop and revert to old ways as the hump seems too challenging to overcome.
Some see resolutions as a form of “cultural procrastination,” an effort to reinvent yourself. People make resolutions as a way of motivating themselves. They aren’t always ready to adapt and change their habits, particularly bad habits, for the long haul and that is often what accounts for the high failure rate. Another reason is they set unrealistic goals and expectations in their resolutions. This is often
referred to as ‘false hope syndrome’ which means that along with the resolutions being significantly unrealistic, they are also out of alignment with the person’s internal view of themselves.
So, what should you do to get over that hump? Read this full article with some ideas to keep you on track, keep you driving yourself in the right direction, forging a road that’ll lead to achieving more:
Also at new year, everyone tends to get focused and pumped and start firing on into the year, and here I write about doing something contrary to that – taking a step back.
“Take a step back, evaluate what is important, and enjoy life.” – Teri Garr
Sometimes we all get caught up a little too much in everyday life, feel out of control and, well, that can result in us feeling rubbish about ourselves!
It is so important that when we get into (or close to) such a place, we considertaking a step back, and start to feel good about ourselves again, because if YOU don’t appreciate YOU then how can we expect people around us to?
It seems to now be an accepted cultural norm that being busy automatically equates to success, so being busy is something that many people strive for. But perhaps for some, or at some times, such busy-ness can be all wrong.
Our daily life is often a busy, non-stop place to be. Sometimes it can feel like an exhausting, never-ending treadmill of busyness – one that it isn’t always easy to step off or step back from. Of course, there are times when we will be busy, there’s no getting away from that – but we shouldn’t be relentlessly plodding away on the treadmill all the time just for the sake of appearing to be busy and for all the
perceived ‘benefits’ this brings us.
Instead, we sometimes (or perhaps often) need to consciously step off the treadmill now and again. We need to give ourselves the space and time to think, so that we are in the best position possible to move forward with more energy. Yes, your day-to-day tasks will usually still need to be delivered, but it is worth stepping back now and again to spend some time really thinking about ourselves, or reflecting, or
even not thinking at all in order to reset.Researchers at University at Buffalo (Phuong et al., 2018, Journal of Experimental Psychology) found that to maximally benefit from awe-inspiring experiences when facing subsequent stressors, we may need to take a step back from ourselves before we take it all in.
So, if, you’ve too often succumbed to the curse of being too busy, now may be the time to change that. After all, this period of unprecedented change that we’re all trying to navigate, demands our full attention, and therefore will require us to stop, reset and re-calibrate more often. Read this article to read about the benefits of breaking the busyness and pressing pause now and again:
Learning to effectively employ one’s imagination is a key part of my work with clients, patients and students. It is important for use with a great many therapy interventions, important in so many aspects of life when seeking to advance; so much so that I wanted to give some simple instruction on how to use it better.
“You have all the reason in the world to achieve your grandest dreams. Imagination plus innovation equals realization.” ― Denis Waitley
The world and our lives can pretty much always benefit from the increasingly effective use of imagination and creativity.
Every day we are facing new problems and challenges. Too often, we continue to respond to these problems in the same way that we have always responded. We keep doing what they have always done and keep getting the same result. Instead, perhaps we should be searching for new ways of solving the problems.
This is where imagination can play a great role and value in each one’s life. In the modern world creativity is valued as the most important skill, says a recent survey. Research by Siyuan Liu and Allen Braun (who tracked brain activity of freestyle rappers) showed that the parts of the brain that we use in ‘business as usual’ thinking are totally switched off when we are being creative, whereas other parts of
our mind that we do not use every day are quite active.
What challenges do you face in your everyday life? What obstacles stand in your way of achieving the success you dream about? Are you so focused on the problems that you fail to see the opportunities around the corner? Shift your focus to the possibilities. Choose a new path into the future. Imagine a better world for yourself.
Albert Einstein once said,
“Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.”
What are you doing to boost your imagination — to open the doors for more creativity? What are you doing to escape the often black hole of negative thinking? Read this full article for a number of ways to improve your imaginative thinking and to advance your life as a result:
