- Hello and welcome to this week's edition of Adam Up
For the second time in a row I've not published an edition of this ezine for 3 weeks! It's the joint longest I've gone without sending it out in the 15 years since I started writing Adam Up.
It's been my son's 8th Birthday, I've just begun a new research experiment at Bournemouth University, the new academic year has begun at my college and we started with a new diploma course, it is just two weeks until the UK hypnosis convention I run, oh yes, I also ran 80km of all 4 Bournemouth Marathon festival races.... Fun times. Busy times.
I have three new articles for you. In upcoming articles, I plan on writing about some well-known themes in personal development circles and showing how to truly apply them and benefit from them. One of today's articles centres on the notion of seizing the day. I also write about stopping taking things personally and how to develop a growth mindset.
In addition to all this new stuff I'm sharing with you this week, I also have a new evidence-based hypnosis meme for you.
And just as a reminder, you are receiving this email because you signed up for this ezine, downloaded a course prospectus or attended a course at some point in time. If you no longer wish to receive this weekly hypnosis and personal development ezine, you may unsubscribe by clicking the link at the foot of this email. I only want you to receive it each week if you find it of value and you actually read it. Also, we delete you from
our distribution if you have not opened these emails for a while.
In compliance with GDPR, the only information that we hold is your name and email address. We will not share these details with anyone and we will only use them to send you this and related, relevant broadcasts. This broadcast is only sent to people who have signed up with our double opt-in system.
Ok, let's get on with it, shall we?
Big Thank you!
My Multi Marathon Adventure...
|
I went on and on about it all year, well just under 3 weeks ago, it happened and I did it. That is, I ran the 10k race, then the 5k race, then the half marathon, got driven to the start line and ran the full marathon.
Phew-wee.
I'm not going to lie, I found it tough. One reason is that I am 2.5 stone heavier than my slowest previous marathon performance. I've been enjoying weight lifting and have packed some beef on that I had to haul around the 80km of races.
On the Saturday my brother ran the 10k and 5k race with me. He helped ensure that I did not run too fast. The 5k was a nighttime race where everyone wears head torches, and we also wore fluorescent bands and glow sticks, it was great fun. There are pictures on my social media channels if you are interested.
I got to be quite late and was a bit tired from those races. I showered and ate later than usual and did not sleep very well due to not being used to running late, eating late and so on.
The half marathon was 15 minutes late starting which would have scuppered my plans for the day, so I was given permission to head off early with a lone guide bike along the course. The elites and good club runners soon caught me up, but it meant that I got to the end in a well planned 1 hour 41 minutes and was driven straight from Bournemouth town centre back to the start of the marathon. I felt tired, but all I had to do was plod to the end. I felt good to begin
with; lots of runners chatted to me about what I was doing, I saw people I knew cheering and supporting and I was distracted from focusing on my legs too much.
However, at the 17 mile mark, there is a big steep hill climb in front of the Bournemouth International Centre at the sea front and I had to stop and walk up that hill. It was then that I felt like I was struggling. It was very hot and I was getting sun burnt too. At the 19 mile mark, I knew my wife and children were going to be waiting for me near to our beach hut to cheer me on - my children had both drawn and coloured in banners of support and as soon as I saw
them, I got overwhelmed with emotion and had to muffle my tears and wobbly chin. I have no idea what came over me. I high-fived them all and ran on towards Sandbanks, knowing I'd be coming back and seeing them again at this same point which would be mile 25.
I was determined to be able to smile and give them all some love, but again, as soon as I saw them in the distance cheering, I just lost it. That is, I got uncontrollably emotional. This has never happened to me before. I was hurting, and I was close to the end, I was baffled and smiled as much as I could and cheered them cheering me and headed off to the finish line. The crowds were notified by the announcer that I had run all 4 events and I got a rousing
reception which was lovely and I mustered a sort of sprint finish and raised my arms aloft across the finish line. It was two metres past the finish line that I had my third bout of uncontrollable emotional outpouring and hilariously (in hindsight) had a cry - a lovely mature gentleman rubbed my back and comforted me hahahaha!
Overall, it was wonderful. There are photos of me on my social media feeds with all 4 of my medals and photos of me at the finish line if you'd like to see. Thanks to everyone who sponsored me. I raised £4500.00 for a wonderful cause of all-weather sports facilities for my children's school that will do so much good for generations to come.
I'm having some time away from running and am applying myself to a new set of goals and other activities already that I'll no doubt share here in coming weeks and months.
New Next Time!
The Forty-Six Pack Programme is Coming Soon.
|
If you are hoping to have that beach body to show off next Summer, then the new year is the time to make that happen. In the new year, I am going to be shifting a lot of the focus of my work back into personal development, and that begins with a major new initiative that I've been compiling and creating in the past 9 months.
In the next edition, I'm going to be launching my new body mastery programme - for those looking to reduce weight, to gain weight and ultimately to create a physique to be proud of.
At the ripe age of 46, I currently have a six pack, and have photos to prove it that were taken at a recent photoshoot that I'll be sharing online. I'm the guy with the bow ties, with the suits and the geek glasses - this was a pretty terrifying experience for me at first, and sharing the pictures is just as scary regardless of how proud I am. I am doing it because I want to walk the talk and demonstrate that this programme is not just theory and that I have applied it all myself.
It will be an 8 week programme - it will contain meal plans for those who want them, it will contain evidence based psychological processes, hypnosis sessions, accountability measures, regular check-ins, compliance measures and is going to blow you away and result in massive change for those who apply themselves and follow the programme. Although it runs over a period of 8 weeks, it will set you up for much longer and is aimed at being a much longer term programme.
This is just a heads up, tune in next time for more information and the launch.

How often do you just accept what life throws at you?
Live another day, another week, another year waiting for your ultimate life to present itself?
When was the last time you challenged a fundamental assumption about the way you live?
It’s pretty natural to just do what everyone else is doing, especially when we’re led to believe there is a standard path to success. Many of us are on auto-pilot.
But doing what everyone else is doing rarely leads to creating our ultimate lives.
We end up competing in an endless cycle, with the hope that our ultimate life will eventually reveal itself like a bright yellow brick road that we can calmly take.
You probably have heard the words “Carpe Diem”. I first became aware of it (as did many others, I suspect) as a result of watching the film ‘The Dead Poet’s Society’ starring Robin Williams. It was taken from a Latin phrase that says: “Carpe diem quam minimum credula postero” meaning “seize the day, trusting as little as possible in the future.”
Come and read this article in full for some strategies you can follow to seize the day:
Carpe Diem, Seize The Day.
Throughout my earlier life, and plenty of my adult life, I took things far too personally. It plagued me. Today, I still have some of these feelings occur from time to time, but as a result of the exploration I have done, and the work I have done on myself and with clients and students, I’ve found a few things to be effective in this regard – this article offers the results of that experience and exploration.
“Don’t Take Anything Personally. Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.” – Don Miguel Ruiz
We are all different and think in a different manner. No two individuals are the same or have to deal with the same issues. In order to survive and then thrive in the modern world, it is vital that we learn to have resilience, a brave heart and a strong mind.
If you are someone who has the habit of taking things personally in everyday life, then you should do your best to change yourself, to update the way you think and feel. If you do not stop taking things personally, then at the end of the day you are the one who will continue to be hurt.
(Good) Things That Happen In Your Life When You Stop Taking Things Personally!
Come read the full article for references, the reasons why you benefit and number of ways you can today stop taking things personally:
How to Stop Taking Things Personally.
What kind of a mindset do you have? Today I am encouraging you to adopt a growth mindset and explaining why I think it is so important.
We often assume that people can and do think in the same way. However, that’s not necessarily true. Each person carries a different mode of thinking in his or her own mind. Mindset contains two terms: Mind and Set, in other words understanding, feeling, perceiving, psyche and soul (mind) and the individual compilation or reduction of environmental, verbal or emotional messages (set). One could also say: attitude of the mind. Logically, it follows that a person’s thinking depends on basic
assumptions, values, and principles that have formed them, its’ interaction, and what a person notices.
Depending on the mindset, people perceive their environment completely differently. Your mindset ensures that you intuitively capture certain information and hide others. That is, it acts as a filter. Your mindset also influences how you interpret your perceptions, what information you make more readily accessible. What options for action you see in a situation, which decisions you make, what you do or do not, all that is influenced massively by your mindset.
Research conducted by ‘YMC Advisors and Implementation Partners’ showed that, the view individuals adopt for themselves profoundly affects the way they lead their life. It can determine whether you become the person you want to be and whether you accomplish the things you value. How does this happen? How can a simple belief have the power to transform your psychology and, as a result, your life? Believing that your qualities are carved in stone – the fixed mindset – creates an urgency to prove
yourself over and over. If you have only a certain amount of intelligence, a certain personality, and a certain moral character – well, then you’d better prove that you have a healthy dose of them. It simply wouldn’t do to look or feel deficient in these most basic characteristics.
Come and read this article in full where I explain what a growth mindset is, how you benefit from it and how to develop one for yourself:
