- Hello and welcome to this week's edition of Adam Up
I've not published an edition of this ezine for 3 weeks! It's the longest I've gone without sending it out in the 15 years since I started writing Adam Up.
I ran a 9 day training course, have been in the final throes of my big event training, had research deadlines, have been organising the UK Hypnosis Convention, and my children have been sharing with me their cold and flu bugs they've picked up since being back at school. Today, I am back with a special edition.
For most of 2019, I've been going on about running all four Bournemouth marathon festival events one after the other and that has now arrive. Tomorrow I will run the 5k and the 10k races. Then on Sunday morning I will run the half marathon and then be driven back to the start to immediately run the full marathon. At the same time that I have been training for this, I have been doing weight lifting training and so am running these events heavier than I have ever done before, though also much
stronger. Today, I'm sharing some of the psychological skills and strategies that I shall be using this weekend.
On top of that, I have three new articles for you. I write about having no regrets in life, about developing self-control and about stopping making excuses - all topics that I have explored in great detail in the last year while I have been applying myself to my ongoing endeavours.
In addition to all this new stuff I'm sharing with you this week, I also have a new evidence-based hypnosis meme for you.
And just as a reminder, you are receiving this email because you signed up for this ezine, downloaded a course prospectus or attended a course at some point in time. If you no longer wish to receive this weekly hypnosis and personal development ezine, you may unsubscribe by clicking the link at the foot of this email. I only want you to receive it each week if you find it of value and you actually read it. Also, we delete you from
our distribution if you have not opened these emails for a while.
In compliance with GDPR, the only information that we hold is your name and email address. We will not share these details with anyone and we will only use them to send you this and related, relevant broadcasts. This broadcast is only sent to people who have signed up with our double opt-in system.
Ok, let's get on with it, shall we?

My offer is this; I'm looking for 3 people (ideally trained hypnotherapists) who are interested in some exceptional hypnosis and hypnotherapy further education. In exchange for £550.00 sponsorship paid to my fundraising page, you can attend any and all of my live classroom based courses for the next 3 years. Also, I'll give you full lifetime access to my full members area containing all of my online courses (yep, every single one). You can even attend my diploma course (though not take the full qualification, just sit in on it). Contact me (reply to this email) if you are interested and the first 3 people who wish to take it up and who then sponsor me will get the open ticket and I'll set them up with the online access. This will expire on Monday once my marathon running exploits have come to an end, so you need to contact
me by then.

Developing Self-Control, Stop Making Excuses and Live WIth No Regrets...
|
This year has required me to study and apply self-control in a number of ways. Training to run an ultra endurance running event, weight-lifting, building a particular physique in my mid-40s, raising my children, having a busy business, engaging in research has all required me to have a degree of self-control and I wanted to share some of that here today.
Self-control is the idea of taking consistent action regardless of the emotional state you experience. Rain or shine, you’re out there delivering and following through.
Now imagine what difference self-control can do to the areas where you want to see yourself improve the most. Think of the impact self-control can do to your health when you gladly choose to work out instead of eating junk and watching TV. Not only would you be able to feel healthier, but you would also feel significantly more fulfilled. In fact, a collection of studies conducted at Stanford University by Walter Mischel and colleagues (including the famous marshmallow test) shows that exerting
self-control can make you happier not only in the long run but also right now at this time in your life. In other words, the ability to delay gratification (how self-control was exerted in the marshmallow test) helps in so many aspects of life.
Other researchers have discovered that people with higher self-control have better relationship skills, are less likely to abuse alcohol and other substances, suffer fewer mental health problems, and have better overall emotional health.
On the other hand, if you lack self-control, your life has the potential to be driven by your mood swings. One day you work harder than all of your friends and colleagues, and on other days, you’re so behind that you’re considering giving up.
There are things you can do to control yourself and gain the willpower to live a happier life. If you are looking to develop self-control, this article contains some of the most powerful things you can do:
How to Develop Self-Control.
Are you making excuses instead of really living the life you want? Well if so, this next article is aimed at you.
Building self-discipline is all about putting an end to excuses.
It’s about taking responsibility for your behaviour and your life. It’s about getting the most out of your life. And, if you want to get the most out of life, you have to get up off of your backside and go after your goals. Anybody can tell you what they would like from life and, most people will tell you. However, when push comes to shove, how many people do you know who are committed to pursuing their
goals and are relentless in doing so? If you are honest, you may know very few people who really fit this description. If you want to be like these people, you need to avoid making excuses and take action.
The ability to stop and then avoid making excuses and focus on the task is seriously underrated. There are many things, which can come between you and your goal, and, some of them will lie outside of your control. When these kinds of events occur, it is easy to start pointing the finger at everybody else. Honestly, there are times when it feels good to have somebody to blame. It can help you to feel
better about yourself at that moment in time but when that moment passes, you see that blaming others is a waste of time and energy. In the end, constantly blaming others makes you lazy and weak. According to University of Kansas researchers Snyder, Higgins and Stucky, excuses ultimately undermine one’s accountability, which makes other people see them as deceitful, ineffectual and self-absorbed. If you want to achieve your goals, you need to accept the setbacks, identify ways to overcome them
and, get back on track.
If you are not achieving the results, you want; it’s time to put an end to excuses. The tips in this article can help you avoid making excuses:
How To Stop Making Excuses.
As I have got older and time appears so much more precious, this next topic has become of increasing importance to me. When I write about having no regrets, this is not just classic death bed regrets, I am also referring to having no regrets when my children have grown older, with how I run my business, with my fitness and well-being goals and so much more.
“Don’t wait until your dreams become your regrets.” ― Anthon St. Maarten
Our lives are ever-changing. They will never be the same as they are today or were yesterday. People can waste a lot of time trying to recapture what they had or figure out where they are going. Looking back later in life (we often reflect too late), we realise that we wasted a lot of time focusing on the wrong things which leads to regrets.
Regrets come in a variety of unpleasant packages, but it turns out people’s biggest, most enduring misgivings when looking back at their lives have to do with not being all they could have been and not living up to their potential, being someone they know they could have been or their ideal selves, a recent study published in the journal Emotion confirmed.
These “ideal-related regrets” — like settling for a stable career instead of following a passion, marrying a “safe” partner instead of pursuing a truly special love interest, never starting a business or traveling around the world — were more painful than regrets about not living up to responsibilities.
Regret can have damaging effects on mind and body. A recent research, reported in the AARP Newsletter, shows regret can result in chronic stress, negatively affecting hormonal and immune system functioning. So, it’s important to find out how to control this ubiquitous and complicated emotion.
While we strive to keep focused on the right things in life, it is important that we recognise and avoid those behaviours that will keep us from living a happy fulfilled life. In this article, I have charted the top 11 things you can do to save your future-self from regrets, according to studies and authors I have read on this topic:

If you follow me on social media, you'll see that I posted a photo this week of me receiving a winners sticker at my gym for winning a league event. My gym runs a league event each year whereby all the members compete and support each other in a series of events that test all types of strength and conditioning. Winning an event was a big deal for me, I was competing against people 20-25 years younger than
me in some cases and I was asked how someone my age can keep competing as I do, and can develop such gym strength on top of training for ultra endurance events.
The age defying skills are self-hypnosis and well researched psychology tools, supported by solid science. I wanted to share some of those today, but in particular I wanted you to know the exact applications I'll be using this weekend in my running events.....
