- Hello and welcome to this week's edition of Adam Up
With so much going on for me personally and professionally in recent weeks, this is the first time in 3 weeks I have sent out an edition of Adam Up.
I have a LOT to share with you in this edition of Adam Up.
The latest episode of the Hypnosis weekly podcast have gone live since the last edition of this ezine went out. Episode 107 was a great episode. It featured Yorkshire lass Kaz Riley and she talks all things sexual freedom and hypnosis... have a listen here:
Hypnosis Weekly Episode 107 - Featuring Kaz Riley.
I'm sharing with you two new videos today as well; one about a major myth that is perpetuated by many in the hypnosis and hypnotherapy fields about subliminal messages and subliminal recordings. The other is all about the power of simply labelling something "hypnosis." I've also got new articles focusing on being in denial, being too materialistic and how to find balance in life.
I've got a bunch of other stuff too (including very exciting notifications about some special speakers the UK Hypnosis Convention) and a fresh evidence based hypnosis meme of the week (a wonderfully different one).
And just as a reminder, you are receiving this email because you signed up for this ezine, downloaded a course prospectus or attended a course at some point in time. If you no longer wish to receive this weekly hypnosis and personal development ezine, you may unsubscribe by clicking the link at the foot of this email. I only want you to receive it each week if you find it of value and you actually read it. Also, we delete you from
our distribution if you have not opened these emails for a while.
In compliance with GDPR, the only information that we hold is your name and email address. We will not share these details with anyone and we will only use them to send you this and related, relevant broadcasts. This broadcast is only sent to people who have signed up with our double opt-in system.
Ok, let's get on with it, shall we?
How To Find Balance and Are you in denial?
|
Balance is our first theme today….
“The best and safest thing is to keep a balance in your life, acknowledge the great powers around us and in us. If you can do that, and live that way, you are really a wise man.” – Euripides.
Maintaining balance in life is what many (perhaps most?) people strive for, yet many complain that it’s a difficult, if not impossible endeavour.
Granted, life gets in the way. That’s pretty much a universal complaint I see and hear made by clients, students and peers. There are kids to tend to, errands to run, the job to perform well at, learning new skills, attaining a certain level of education and/or experience, relationships to manage, bills to pay, health to take care of – and so much more. Is it any wonder that there sometimes seem to be too few
hours in the day and oh, so much left to do?
How then are you to go about keeping a balance in your life? What tips or techniques work well to begin to put together the framework that facilitates such an equilibrium? Read this article here for some suggestions and much more besides...
Secondly here.... Are you in denial?
“It takes a lot of courage to face up to things you can’t do because we feed ourselves so much denial.” – Zoe Saldana.
We’re all in denial. We’d barely get through the day if we worried that we or people we love could die today. Life is unpredictable, and denial helps us cope and focus on what we must in order to survive. On the other hand, denial harms us when it causes us to ignore problems for which there are solutions or deny feelings and needs that if dealt with would enhance our lives. Unfortunately, if you’re in denial,
you won’t usually know it. I see it in my clients, I see it in my students, I see it in fellow hypnotherapists and I see it in myself.
Therefore, I have chosen to write about denial today and help anyone learn how to recognise denial in its many forms.
Types and Degrees of Denial:
When it comes to codependency, denial has been called the hallmark of addiction. It’s true not only for drug or alcohol addicts, but also for their partners and family members. This axiom also applies to abuse and other types of addiction, but is just one example, used here to illustrate. We may use denial in varying degrees.
• First degree: Denial that the problem, symptom, feeling or
need exists.
• Second degree: Minimisation or rationalisation about it.
• Third degree: Admitting it, but denying the consequences.
• Fourth degree: Unwilling to seek help for it.
Thus, denial doesn’t always mean we don’t see there’s a problem, we might rationalise, excuse, or minimise its significance or effect upon us. Other types of denial are forgetting, outright lying or contradicting the facts due to self-deception. Deeper still, we may repress things that are too painful to remember or think about.
“We live in a world of denial, and we don’t know what the truth is anymore.” – Javier Bardem.

New Videos:
Is there any evidence for subliminal messages or hypnosis recordings? What happens when you label something 'hypnosis'?....
|
In this video, I tackle a subject I am asked about a great deal – subliminal messaging, subliminal hypnosis recordings and subliminal influence in general. In the video I discuss the main literature driving belief in such subliminal offerings and I discuss the evidence base claimed to support it.
Enjoy and let me know your thoughts….
Video: Subliminal messages & hypnosis recordings – Do they work? What does the evidence say?
Secondly.... It may initially seem quite obvious to ask the question “what happens when you label something as hypnosis” especially if you are a hypnosis professional of some kind. The answer, and the question itself actually creates much debate and has important implications for us hypnosis professionals. In this video I explain that….

Ways to Reduce Materialism...
|
Does materialism and being materialistic really deliver the kind of happiness and enrichment or meaning that people seek in life?
I’m not convinced it does.
Recently, I took over the UK Hypnosis Convention and had lots of people desperate to give me advice about how to make it a major commercial success. They considered little else. For me in my role within the hypnotherapy field, I want to deliver enormous amounts of education, I want to raise standards in my professional field, I want people to walk away from the event having benefited deeply and profoundly on many levels. It
needs to be commercially viable, but it is not exclusively about making money.
Likewise, I encounter so many ”business development gurus” within my professional field that dangle the ideal and fantasy of materialism in the faces of those who want it as a means of selling their wares (when I’m not even convinced they are that successful themselves) – this is a discussion for another day, the point is that materialism as a driver and as something to strive for, or be obsessed with, often lacks meaning and
deeper satisfaction that offers us fulfilment and genuine happiness.
“Material is meant to be a fun, lighthearted song about the tiny bit of materialism that’s in all of us. The message is meant to translate the notion that you don’t need luxury items to feel special; you already are special.” – Yuna.
Why is there a global epidemic of the “Miserably Successful”? Our M.I.S.E.R.Y is often self-imposed. This post focuses on Materialism, let’s link the two….
M. Materialism (equating personal value with physical objects or status)
I. Incongruence (between purpose, actions, and words)
S. Stress (the explosion fuelled by business demands, personality, resilience)
E. Emptiness (in spite of outward trappings of success, feeling hollow inside)
R. Righteousness (making judgments, feeling superior)
Y. Yeti (one’s “Abominable Snowman”: the self-talk of defeatism)
One problem with a purely materialistic focus is that it deprives you of the ability to evolve; you construct and configure reality in such a way that makes you believe that it is the only way to be, it takes away a wider sense of perception and exploration. Many come to believe that the main gauge of success is through materialistic gains. Read this article in full here for references and a number of ways to reduce materialism
and to create a more meaningful life for yourself...
