- Hello and welcome to this week's edition of Adam Up
I'm back after a couple of restorative weeks away in France, which were very much needed.
While away, I met a French man who played pétanque each day in the late afternoon and despite him and I not speaking a word of the same language, he was my sort of guy. A fair few years older than me, he was incredibly happy and had such an agreeable
demeanour. In addition to a very cheeky grin and much laughter, he also whistled loudly and merrily each morning when I passed him and wished him "bonjour" and it made me think of the wonderful William James quote....
"I don't sing because I'm happy; I'm happy because I sing."
I have pondered that greatly in recent weeks.
Anyway.... I've eaten too much, drunk too
much, danced, sang, bombed down water slides, played a lot of pétanque, seen lots of sights, spent quality time with my wife and children making memories and it was such a tonic. The new academic year is upon me, I've been catching up as best as I can this past few days, and this Adam Up is my post-holiday edition...
I have a similar theme for our latest meme, video and article this week - brain myths. Yes indeed neuro-myths that so many people (especially those in my professional
field!) believe to be true but are not (like we only use 10% of our brains, we are all either left brained or right brained, we have preferred learning styles, such as NLP's rep systems and much more besides, includes loads about memory and IQ). I refute a great deal with modern neuroscience here today.
I've got a bunch of other stuff too (including notifications about upcoming courses), a fresh evidence based hypnosis meme of the week (incredible
one about cerebral blood flow this week), and a joke or two along the way.....
And just as a reminder, you are receiving this email because you signed up for this ezine, downloaded a course prospectus or attended a course at some point in time. If you no longer wish to receive this weekly hypnosis and personal development ezine, you may unsubscribe by clicking the link at the foot of this email. I
only want you to receive it each week if you find it of value and you actually read it. Also, we delete you from our distribution if you have not opened these emails for a while.
In compliance with GDPR, the only information that we hold is your name and email address. We will not share these details with anyone and we will only use them to send you this and related, relevant broadcasts. This broadcast is only sent to people who have signed up with our

Ok, let's get on with it, shall we?
Video: Exploring Common Brain Myths
|
I have a new video over at the Hypnosis Geek YouTube channel. It is one I've been meaning to record for some time and got
around to it this week. SOOO many professionals in my field believe these things to be true and perpetuate them.
In this video, I talk about some very common myths about the brain that are perpetuated within the hypnosis field and related fields. I refute a number of popular myths with modern neuroscience – myths such as us having preferred learning styles (such as NLP’s rep systems), only using 10% of our brains and being left or right brained, plus many more about memory, IQ and
brain size!
Enjoy the video, let me know what you think….
Fancy Being Involved In Some Pioneering Research?
|
This Autumn, I will be back in the lab engaging with the latest research experiment of mine exploring self-hypnosis. If you'd like to come and be a participant in the experiment and can make it to Bournemouth University in September or October or
November this year during a week day, then simply let me know and I'll put you on the list to contact and would love you to come and be involved - send me an email and I'll register your interest. =====Interested in learning self-hypnosis? Want to get proof of your own self-hypnosis
skills and create hypnotic phenomena by yourself, for yourself? Don’t know where to start?
Here’s your answer….
I get asked so often by so many people about the best way to learn self-hypnosis and to get some kind of evidence that they are doing it correctly. I usually reply to say that the single best way to know you are doing self-hypnosis correctly is to give yourself real-life evidence – by creating hypnotic phenomena.
What do I mean by “hypnotic
Phenomena”?
This is our effect. The effect that we are going to create. With stage hypnotists, they create effects of people believing they are someone else, for example. With hypnotherapists they create effects of being free of habits, for example. With street hypnotists, they create the effect of someone believing their foot is stuck to the floor, for example. Within this self-hypnosis roadmap, you are going to create an effect that is going to be undeniably convincing to you
that you are using self-hypnosis well.
This roadmap teaches you how to adopt the hypnotic mindset, how to induce self-hypnosis, how to absorb yourself profoundly in self-hypnosis, how to create your own incredible hypnotic phenomena, and then how to exit self-hypnosis and develop your skills with it. I think you are going to love this. To get the roadmap and guide sent through to your inbox straight away, just visit this page on my college website:
A FREE Self-Hypnosis Roadmap – Learn How To Create Your Own Hypnotic Phenomena. Go download
this, you are going to have a lot of fun with it, believe me. Enjoy engaging with self-hypnosis, most importantly, enjoy creating real-life undeniable hypnotic phenomena for yourself – it's going to blow your mind.
======
I mentioned it in previous editions of this ezine, I am going to be on tour a bit this year. I am coming North to Hull - in fact, I'll be there this time next week (Friday the 27th and Saturday the 28th of July) and we still have some spaces if you wish to join us.
I am going East to Norwich. I am going west to Cardiff. I am going to the midlands in Birmingham and I'll be in London though the upcoming one day seminars here in Bournemouth in March are now
completely full to capacity and sold out. Wherever you are based in the UK though, I hope you'll be able to access my seminars this year.My rapid inductions and hypnotic phenomena for hypnotherapists seminar is coming to all these venues, and so is my science of self-hypnosis seminar. Many of the dates are at weekends, so there's no excuse. Each is less than £100.00 to attend (plus Vat) and you can read
about the course, grab all the dates, details about course content and more by downloading a free prospectus at these two pages on my website, come and join me in your neck of the woods:

I have crammed it full of information, advice, guidance and it includes a mass of free resources that I wished I had been given when I first looked at training to be a hypnotherapist:
This Week's Main Article: Common Brain Myths Explored – Neuroscience Debunks Many Popular Myths About the Brain
|
Brain myths are my topic today – there are so many myths about the brain that are incredibly popular; so much so, that many are considered fact and many people struggle to believe that they are a myth when
questioned. In my professional field and related fields, this is important. Understanding the brain and how it works is of course important to the field of mental health. Those familiar with my teaching and my work know that critical thinking is at the heart of how we do things here and so examining the evidence to support statements people make about the brain is important. Therefore, I have wanted to write something about brain myths for a while – especially as within my field neuroscience
gets cited so much these days. Despite major technological advances in how we can examine it (Pet scans, fMRI, neuroimaging etc), the brain is still a great mystery to us. Due to the complexity of the brain, we tend to simplify information about how it works in order to make it more understandable. Throughout the years, by attaching pieces of information together we have created many myths about the brain. There are so many brain myths that there are books written about them
which do a much better job at explaining than I can do here in a single, simple article.
Over the last decade neuroscientists have shown us that many things we thought we knew about the brain were nothing but myths. Yet many of these myths persist. Today, I’m covering some of the most common and widespread myths that have been circulating about the brain; most of which find their way into my professional field, such as; we only use 10% of our brains, adults can’t grow new brain cells, we
all have preferred learning styles, we are all either left brained or right brained, memory capacity is fixed and limited, IQ is set in stone, brain size determines intelligence, alcohol kills brain cells and a couple of others along the way. Ok, let’s get to it….
Go read this article for the full article along with the references, related links and supporting evidence.....

This week I have one-liner that has been chosen as the funniest joke at this year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Dave's Funniest Joke of the Fringe - now in its 11th year - has been won by Liverpool comedian
Adam Rowe.
The joke came from his show Undeniable....
"Working at the Jobcentre has to be a tense job - knowing that if you get fired, you still have to come in the next day." Hahahaha, enjoyed that..... Thanks to all who continue to send
them in to me and tag me online with jokes each week. |
