- Hello and welcome to this week's edition of Adam Up
It is the 1st of February, and things are hotting up here in many senses of the word and I've got lots to share with you this week.
Please note, if you do not wish to receive this weekly hypnosis ezine, then do unsubscribe at the foot of the email and you'll not receive it anymore.
I charted the latest entry on the Hypnosis for Running blog
since it made a recent comeback. This week I've been sharing photos of my office interior and writing about why I need to plan running on already fatigued legs for my latest 100km endurance running challenge, have a read here:
It’s All About Time On
Legs… Can I Stand It?
Ok, let's get on with it, shall we?
This week marked the anniversary of me setting up my first hypnotherapy practice, some
21 years ago! My qualifications and professional memberships predate this of course, but I set up my hypnotherapy business 21 years ago.
I am getting plenty of congratulations from people on LinkedIn, most of whom are clicking the automated “congratulations” button without any personalisation at all, which is making me feel pretty special, appreciated and wonderfully connected to those people, I
must say. My penchant for sarcasm has not abated in the past 21 years either, that’s for sure.
In the last 21 years, I have worked with a few thousand individuals one-to-one for hypnotherapy, had a couple of bestselling books, sold a few hundred thousand audio products, trained and taught hundreds of people, lectured to thousands and am still here, in this field, and despite some challenges and
struggles in the early days, today we are doing OK as far as I’m concerned.
I recall on my 21st Birthday having that conversation with other friends that there was now nothing left in terms of what I was legally permitted to do; you can smoke from 16 in the UK, drink alcohol at 18, and at the time, you could get an HGV license at the age of 21 – there was nothing left, I could now go and do whatever
I chose, within the confines of the law. We joked that the previous 21 years had been training, laying foundations for the day we hit 21 and could then do what we wanted.
Upon reflection, I feel like these first 21 years of my business have really only been setting foundations. I’d say that it has only been in recent times that I have felt free within the field I work within – that is, free to
dictate my own direction, express myself, follow what I truly believe, I think in those early days I did not know enough, have enough experience or understanding to be the way I am today. My business has a firm set of principals today, it has a vision, and has been built upon an ethos that I feel strongly about. I think I probably could have earned much more money and been much more popular if I had strayed from that ethos, but I am pleased that I have remained true to it, as much as has been
possible. For me, longevity has been key. I had a dream of being where I am today – that is; working for myself, having autonomy over my life, choosing the direction of my business with hypnotherapy and hypnosis being at the heart of what I do, using it to help others in a wide range of ways. That was the dream, in a sense, I am living the dream! (I cracked up writing that!) Whenever I set goals each new
year, and commence working on new projects, I remind myself that what I have now was once a dream I had and have a lot of gratitude for this.
This week, I received a couple of messages from people who were around when I was starting out, most of them are not actually working in this field any longer, and we discussed all the people who were prevalent at the time, the different types of communication
employed back then, marketing attempts, and it made me realise how much has changed and how few people have true longevity of career in this field. For anyone wanting to work as a hypnotherapist for a lengthy period of time, from nothing more than my own experience, I wrote the following advice, have a read:
Celebrating 21 Years As a Hypnotherapist!
The Hypnosis Geek UK Tour
|
I mentioned it last week, I am going to be on tour a bit this year. I am coming
North to Hull. I am going East to Norwich. I am going west to Cardiff. I am going to the midlands in Birmingham and I'll be in London though the upcoming one day seminars here in Bournemouth in March are now completely full to capacity and sold out. Wherever you are based in the UK though, I hope you'll be able to access my seminars this year.My rapid inductions and hypnotic phenomena for hypnotherapists
seminar is coming to all these venues, and so is my science of self-hypnosis seminar. Many of the dates are at weekends, so there's no excuse. Each is less than £100.00 to attend (plus Vat) and you can read about the course, grab all the dates, details about course content and more by downloading a free prospectus at these two pages on my website, come and join me in your neck of the woods:
YouTube and Some More Archive Footage
|
My YouTube channel has had a revamp and we're getting such great feedback from it. Earlier today, I uploaded a clip from our archives from a seminar I ran with James Brown from back in 2008 - in the clip I demonstrate and a direct gaze hypnosis induction and how to use a 'somatic awareness' deepening process; at the end of the
clip we had a few laughs about going cross eyed during such processes so it's worth watching to the end - you can watch that clip here:

Onto today's main theme... Finding Hope in difficult times.
|
Hope is something that is a major theme with my hypnotherapy clients, my students,
my friends and family.
Today, we find hope. Today, we hold on to hope, we celebrate hope. In the Star Wars film Rogue One, Cassian Andor is speaking to Jyn Erso while they are trying to get a meeting with Saw Gerrerra. Cassian says “We’ll give your name and hope that gets us a meeting with Saw.” ”
“Hope?” Jyn asks. “Yeah,” Cassian responds. “Rebellions are built on hope.”
In a later scene in the film, when Jyn is then speaking to the rebellion council, urging them to fight, she says, “We need to capture the Death Star plans if there is any hope of destroying it.” “You’re asking us to invade an imperial installation based on nothing but hope?”
they enquire back. “Rebellions are built on hope.” She responds, beautifully.
Then the film which began it all, Star Wars IV: A new hope happens and we know the value of hope from what ensues.
In your life, things may not be happening in the time frame that you want or need them to happen. If you are at a point in your life, where you are working and not seeing progress,
I want to let you know that you must have hope. Hope is the internal belief that things can and, most importantly, will be better.
In a recent research, Liz Day and her colleagues found that hope was related to academic achievement above and beyond IQ, divergent thinking, and conscientiousness. Without hope, you ultimately tend to resign yourself to accept your current situation. Acceptance will
then cause you and your circumstances to appear hopeless. This can become overwhelming and very difficult to change, but you can do it.
“Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.” – Desmond Tutu.
What does it mean to have hope? We can all pay
lip service with sentiments like, “I hope it all works out,” but this is sometimes just a way of backing out or disengaging from a tough or tricky situation. Real hope comes from a deeper source, the core of the self. At this core some important qualities determine how much hope you feel and can offer to others. Hope is essential in dealing with the common major life transitions like retirement, a new job, a new business venture, marriage, becoming a parent, divorce, menopause and other
developments that occur in life.
“There was never a night or a problem that could defeat sunrise or hope.” – Bernard Williams.
The main qualities of hope are strength, resilience, and optimism. Strength allows you to turn to your own personal power. Resilience means that you
can make a rebound from disruptions and setbacks. Optimism radiates hope for the future. As you can see, these qualities are the reverse of worry, complaint, and pessimism. Instead of being self-defeating, they enhance your self-esteem. If you are strong, resilient, and optimistic enough, you can also lift others out of their self-defeating attitudes. Hope is needed in a crisis, but it should serve as a core value every day. Uncertainty is present in many aspects of life and being able to
tolerate uncertainty and thrive in the face of it is made much easier when you have hope.

Go and have a read of this article at the college website for more detail and information on this offer:
In that article, I listed a number (ten, to be precise) articles that I have written in the last decade that I believe to be incredibly important. They give a sense of the vision I have for the field of professional
hypnotherapy and they offer up a huge amount of resource for anyone interested in this field whether new to the field, or those of you that are seasoned professionals.
If you want to get a good feel for this college and our ethos and what we stand for, then have a read of these articles. They demonstrate so much of what we believe is important for the hypnotherapy field to develop credibly
and effectively.
If you are a hypnotherapist, then I highly recommend the investment of 10 minutes of your time to read these articles, they are ram-packed full of useful information even if you do not choose to study with me, they’ll benefit you greatly:
This week, my social media output has been filled with memes about hypnosis, photos and loads of articles from our vaults (including some really controversial ones from the past few years!!) and some other bits and
pieces.
You can follow and keep up to date here:
Additionally, if you are a student, graduate or friend of my college, then come & join our
Facebook group for hypnotherapists, it has some other wonderful discussion on there too (in particular, this week's meme stimulated a lot of discussion!):
For those of you interested in finding out a bit more about working or studying with me, here are the pages to go and do that:

My three favourite puns from this week.....

inside. 4. I wasn't originally going to get a brain transplant, but then I changed my mind.
