- Hello and welcome to this week's edition of Adam Up
I can barely believe that we are nearing the end of the first month of the new year, I hope it has been a productive time for you as it has here.
My wife and I have been getting into some major new year fitness and I'm going to be writing about my big 2018 challenge in that department later on in today's Adam Up (with my glamour video), but when my
wife has been doing her thing, I have been getting our children ready on some mornings. Last weekend, as a rare treat, I made crumpets as that morning's offerings and in the hullabuloo of it all, I dropped my phone onto a crumpet thickly spread with jam. My instant reaction was to lick the jam off my phone. My 4 year old daughter walked into the kitchen at that exact moment and asked me if I was licking my phone because I was hungry and asked if it did not taste very nice "like broccoli" and was
that why I had put jam on it? I told her it tasted yummy thanks to the jam.
I share this because often the way things seem to us are not accurate of the entire or wider picture; my daughter walked in and thought I was actually eating my phone and because it did not taste that good I had even put jam on it, hahahaha.
Today, one thing I have written about is the importance of assertiveness in our behaviour and I recognise that for many people it is difficult and also I
recognise that with anyone who appears too submissive or too domineering (non-assertive), we may not see the full picture there either. Even though I have written about why we benefit from having a balanced assertiveness, I also hope that we'd all consider other people who struggle to assert themselves effectively and recognise that too.
Ok, let's get on with it, shall we?
The latest edition of the Hypnosis Weekly podcast has gone live, it is a special edition
featuring the (Lay) Vice Chair of the CNHC, Sheila Inglis, as well as a cameo from two professionals who are on the CNHC Profession Specific Board for hypnotherapy, Garry Coles and Kate Beaven-Marks.
I recorded this edition because firstly, you may well find it useful to know more about the CNHC if you are a UK based hypnotherapist (though many of the themes will also interest overseas professionals).
Also though, I wondered how many of you belonged to the CNHC and what your experience is/was of them, and how you'd like them to further the field and what your thoughts are on any form of voluntary regulation n in the hypnotherapy profession? I have been discussing this in our Facebook group, do join us and share your thoughts, I'd appreciate it.
Anyway, go subscribe and tune in if you haven't already, and also you have to take a look at who my guest is next week (clue: a real hero of mine!).....
The Hypnosis Geek UK Tour
|
I mentioned it last week, I am going to be on tour a bit this year. I am coming
North to Hull. I am going East to Norwich. I am going west to Cardiff. I am going to the midlands in Birmingham and I'll be in London though the upcoming one day seminars here in Bournemouth in March are now completely full to capacity and sold out. Wherever you are based in the UK though, I hope you'll be able to access my seminars this year.My rapid inductions and hypnotic phenomena for hypnotherapists
seminar is coming to all these venues, and so is my science of self-hypnosis seminar. Many of the dates are at weekends, so there's no excuse. Each is less than £100.00 to attend (plus Vat) and you can read about the course, grab all the dates, details about course content and more by downloading a free prospectus at these two pages on my website, come and join me in your neck of the woods:
YouTube and The Hypnosis Geek is Back Running!
|
My YouTube channel has had a revamp and we're getting such great feedback from it. Earlier today, I uploaded a clip from our archives from a seminar of a fair few years ago where I demonstrated a heavy arm induction, magnetic palms and then followed it up by eliciting arm catalepsy and a hand stuck to the leg - all in a way that can be done in a hypnotherapy environment - in the clip I explain the processes in detail too, you can watch that clip here:
Class demo of heavy arm & magnetic hands inductions Plus hypnotic phenomena (hand stick & catalepsy) .....
I also added another clip, the most glamourous video I think I have shared publicly - whereby it is 6am, dark, on a stormy seafront belting down with rain, the wind blowing furiously and is all part of my training for my big 2018
ultra running challenge. In a few months time, having had nearly two years away from competitive running, I shall be competing in the "Race to the Stones" a 100km (62.2 miles) run, all in one go, which ends at the Avebury stone circle.
I've reignited my old hobby blog hypnosisforrrunning.com and will be charting all my training, challenges, psychological strategies and more. To welcome the blog back, I recorded a little snippet and wrote a blog stating my goals for this event, so if you
want to see my video and have a read, go do that here:

Onto today's main theme... The benefits of being assertive.
|
Being assertive and the value of it is my topic today. It is that golden zone of appropriate assertiveness
that we are after – not too submissive at one end of the spectrum, not too dominant at the other end of the spectrum, just a good, balanced, healthy level of assertiveness.
“I think naturally, if you’re an actor, there’s a high level of assertiveness that you need to have to survive this business. There’s boldness in being assertive, and there’s strength and confidence.” ~ Bryan
Cranston.
“If I am not for myself, then who will be for me? But if I am for myself alone, what am I? And if not now, when?” – Rabbi Hillel the Elder.
Assertiveness training is something I teach here at my hypnotherapy training college. Authors Wolpe and Lazarus
(1966) stated, “A good many [patients] question the morality of assertive behaviour that is required of them for therapeutic purposes.”
I think a lot of people struggle with the notion of really asserting themselves in the way that have a right to do.
They (Wolpe and Lazarus) attempted to
counter this misconception by appeal to the Talmudic saying above, that “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? But if I am for myself alone, what am I?” By this they meant that the individual must place value on his own well-being, but also recognise and respect the goals of others wherever possible.
Wolpe defines assertiveness quite simply as, “the socially appropriate verbal and motor
expression of any emotion other than anxiety”, and remarks that the very essence of it is simply to act toward others in a way that reasonable and appropriate (1990: 134-135). It is important to understand that assertiveness is not irrationally aggressive or domineering behaviour, but a rational balance, the golden mean, between being too passive and being too overbearing or domineering. In other words, it just means doing what is reasonable and healthy. One aspect of assertiveness is the
ability of getting your point across respectfully.
Can you express your feelings, thoughts and beliefs openly even when one disagrees with your point of view? How comfortable are you at delivering bad news or saying NO in a way your friend, colleague or team member still feels valued? How good are you at standing up for your rights? Emotionally intelligent individuals can and do effectively express feelings, beliefs and thoughts openly and defend their rights in a respectful manner. Assertiveness is the ability to maintain the right balance between your needs and the needs of others. It empowers you and is closely associated with a high level of self-confidence and independence.
Self-confidence and
assertiveness are two skills that are crucial for success in many aspects of life. Your ability to make decisions, understanding your strengths and being able to tune into your feelings in your day-to-day life, can make a massive difference between being successful or not and enjoying your experience of life. Being assertive, gives you focus, drive and determination to stick with the tasks that positively affect our lives. There are some added bonuses, once you have cracked the “self-confidence and assertive nut”, you can transfer your positive energy on and influence the other people effectively in your life.
“Women pay attention to how men drive because it’s a good indicator of what kind of character you have. They want someone who’s going to be intelligent and cautious and assertive and
confident when you need to be, but not overly aggressive and reckless, and also not timid and overly paranoid.” ~ Jason Marsden.

In that article, I listed a number (ten, to be precise) articles that I have written in the last decade that I believe to be incredibly important. They give a sense of the vision I have for the field of professional
hypnotherapy and they offer up a huge amount of resource for anyone interested in this field whether new to the field, or those of you that are seasoned professionals.
