- Hello and welcome to this week's edition of Adam Up
This week has had two special days contained in it here in the UK.
Firstly, we had pancake day.
My children forced me to eat my bodyweight in pancakes and to layer on strawberries, ice cream, chocolate sauce and all
sorts of other things. My stomach hurts thinking about it, so I'll move on.....
Secondly, we had Valentine's Day. And I always think it is important to remind ourselves of some healthful loving themes on this day rather than get too transfixed on the commercialism of it, so here are some articles that I think make from some
exceptional Valentine's week reading:
In this week's edition of Adam Up, I'm disputing a notion that is
used by so many hypnotherapists, I'm quoting a YouGov poll and I'm telling you that it is perfectly OK to take a daytime nap; science supports it!
Ok, let's get on with it, shall we?
New Video – The Conscious and Unconscious: Is It Time Hypnotherapists Stopped Explaining the Mind This Way?
|
As you are likely to have seen last week here on Adam Up, or if you visit this
college website regularly or my own blog and social media channels, I recently shared the Hypnosis Geek manifesto here, you can go and have a read of that and watch the video if you missed it: The Hypnosis Geek Manifesto
Some of the things I wrote about are really relevant today and what I’m posting here:
1. A hypnotherapist should know both sides of any debate, philosophy and argument.
2. Hypnotherapists should know the critique of the stance they adopt – that is, they should not just blindly follow a singular model without understanding the critique of it and the evidence against it.
Neither should they feel affronted when those models are challenged, instead see it as an opportunity to develop and grow.
3. Hypnotherapists should seek to understand and implement evidence base where possible.
4. Hypnotherapists need to be effective critical thinkers.
Some consider the notion of the conscious/unconscious mind to be one of the biggest myths and misconceptions held in the
field of hypnotherapy by front-line hypnotherapists and training schools. It is amazing to see the absolute faith and belief in the notion of the conscious/subconscious model of mind to explain hypnosis and how it works. It is taught as fact in a great many schools and colleges and many, many hypnotherapists tell their clients about this model when explaining hypnosis and not only believe it to be fact, but then expect their clients to believe it is fact. So many hypnotherapists are so utterly
invested in this model, that they shun opposition to it.
Yet there is quite a strong case against this model, it lacks evidence to support it, and could actually create problems for clients if accepted as truth.
In this comprehensive video, I explain the case against this way of explaining the mind and hypnosis,
but also aims to show that this model is not universally accepted, in fact there are no academics, researchers or neuroscientists who follow this model of hypnosis and mind.
It is one of those things that is considered to be “received wisdom” and I’m challenging that received wisdom today. I hope you’ll invest some time watching this and understanding the points I make and taking on board what I say
with an open-mind.

Considering training to be a hypnotherapist?
Wednesdays are about to become webinar days here. I'm going to host some hypnosis geek webinars for those of you with a professional interest in this field, but next week, I'm
kicking things off with a webinar aimed at those of you who are considering training to be a hypnotherapist (or if you know anybody else who is considering it, please let them know of this). Let me explain my reasons for this webinar. Typically, when people are weighing up hypnotherapy training who have not heard of me or my college, the three things I am asked a great
deal:
1. “Do you offer a taster day?” 2. “The hypnotherapy training options are overwhelming. It’s a minefield out there! How do I choose? What do I do?” 3. “Can I really earn a good living as a hypnotherapist?”
I felt that a webinar offering an essential guide to training as a hypnotherapist was a great way to answer these questions and more.
We do not offer a taster day, so this free webinar is an opportunity for you and I to engage in lots of what happens during a taster day; you’ll get to see me and meet me, you’ll get to ask me any questions you like about me, my college, the field of hypnotherapy and being a hypnotherapist in general.
Additionally, in this webinar I will show you
the exact questions you should be asking yourself and your potential hypnotherapy training provider right now to ensure that you are going to derive the best return on investment.
This webinar is going to offer up the exact steps you need to take in order to get the best quality education, have the best skills and be incredibly effective at setting up and running a successful hypnotherapy professional
practice. The aim is that you have no regrets at all when you are under way with your chosen hypnotherapy training.
We’ll have three main areas of focus. Go and have a good read of this article explaining all the details, with a video clip and details of the event being held next week. Spaces are limited and it is going to be packed full of very useful, credible and stimulating information. I'm going
to be provocative, challenge much myth perpetuated by the media and even by many hypnotherapists, I'm going to present science and evidence base and I'm going to share some very cool resources for everyone who attends to keep.
Go have a read about it here:

Onto today's main theme... The Science of Napping!
|
Napping – what a riveting subject to be writing about today, eh? I’m hoping to make it seem
a lot more exciting than it may seem on the surface.
For example; what did Winston Churchill, Salvador Dali, Albert Einstein, Leonardo Da Vinci, John F. Kennedy, Thomas Edison and Aristotle all have in common? That’s right, napping – they all famously wrote about and charted the importance of taking a restorative nap in the day.
They have it right in Spain, whereby many towns close down for a couple of hours in the middle of the day when the temperatures are at their highest… I always felt good when I spent much time in the South of Spain in my younger years and making the most of having a siesta.
Many of my favourite athletes and sports people take naps in the
afternoons as part of their training regimen, Paula Radcliffe (world record holder for the marathon) and numerous boxers in particular claim that napping is as important as the exercise regime and aids the physical recovery of the daily exertions. I know many others that state the same.
“No day is so bad it can’t be fixed with a nap.” ~~ Carrie Snow
Not that any of us are necessarily looking for an excuse, but napping has been proven to dramatically increase and improve learning, memory, awareness levels and more. Unfortunately, due to our corporate, modern day, fast-paced lifestyles, a mid-day nap has been overlooked, seen as a luxury, sometimes frowned upon and in some cases even considered a sign of pure laziness. People have become so consumed with their 9 to 5 that they see
napping as unproductive, without realising that napping is actually very good and a completely natural phenomenon in the circadian (sleep-wake cycle) rhythm and makes a lot of sense when you examine the evidence to support it.
“I eat really healthy, and if I’m tired, I take a nap.” ~~ Casper Van Dien
According to a recent research in US business, drowsiness on the job actually costs $18 billion a year in lost productivity. Clearly, sleep deprivation is a very real problem for many dedicated professionals. Many companies have even taken on board a lot of the science and have areas and chambers for their workforce to go and take naps. Whether you’re self-employed, or an employee at any level of the
career ladder, taking a power nap some time after lunch may have more benefits than you originally thought. What’s more, it does not have the potentially detrimental side-effects of caffeine and sugar as a way of lifting your energy levels. Here are the reasons to make napping during your working day part of your daily routine, and the best methods to use to do so:
Poll Suggests It's a Good Time To Be a Hypnotherapist:
|
Also this week, I wrote on the college blog about how a recent poll suggests now is a great time to be a hypnotherapist. A recent poll
carried out by the international Internet-based market research company, YouGov posed the question:
“Would you ever consider hypnosis as a means to give up a bad habit or help you in some aspect of your behaviour?” (Click on the link to see for yourself, second item down)
The results offered up the following
statistics – I would – 40% I wouldn’t – 37% Don’t know – 23%
If you visit the page, you can also read the statistics are segmented into other sections too; Political party, Gender, Geographical Region, Age and Social Grade. It is useful stuff for those who are interested in their own target market. These kind
of polls are typically weighted and aim to be representative of the population of the country and a total number of 3724 UK adults completed the questionnaire in this instance (and did so in January 2018).
I am of the opinion that this is encouraging and it does highlight that the number of potential clients out there is impressive. If the field in general could work towards enhancing it’s credibility
and professionalism further, along with correcting myth and misconception and continuing to get great results for our clients, we are likely to find those numbers increasing. To see the full results and my thoughts, read this article:
This week, my social media output has been filled with memes about hypnosis, photos and loads of articles from our vaults (including some really controversial ones from the past few years!!) and some other bits and
pieces.
You can follow and keep up to date here:
Additionally, if you are a student, graduate or friend of my college, then come & join our
Facebook group for hypnotherapists, it has some other wonderful discussion on there too (in particular, this week's video stimulated a lot of discussion!):
I'm completely booked up with regards to being able to take on any new clients for hypnotherapy, mentoring or coaching currently, so have removed those links from Adam Up for a few weeks.
