- Hello and welcome to this week's edition of Adam Up
Yesterday, I wrote a quick blog entry on the college website to share a couple of photos that I received in the post from a former colleague of mine Rob
Barrett who worked with Keith and I in the early days. He is moving overseas and very kindly posted on a few bits to me that he had found in some old boxes.
Anyway, the two photos shared show something very particular, I’ll
explain…..
On my self-hypnosis seminars, I show every one of our students how to use the self-hypnosis skills that they have learned that day with me, how to apply those skills to create anaesthesia and analgesia, and then test it there and then if they want to. It is not
obligatory, but I give them all the chance to use their own self-hypnosis skills to create glove anaesthesia and I then put a pin through their arm - their experience is a pain-free one with minimal bleeding and serves as a great convincer with regards to self-hypnosis and what it can do when one applies it effectively.
When I talk through the best ways to do this, I advise everyone in class that when I did this very exercise on my self-hypnosis courses when I was in my early 20s, I had a fairly blunt nappy pin put through my arm which is a lot harder to put through the skin that the surgical needles that I use - what’s more it was ‘cleansed’ using a lighter and so left a permanent small black scar on my arm that looks like I have a jailhouse tattoo
- I also have one on each arm as I did this a couple of times. It was a great experience though and is what really convinced me about my choice of career.
When I tell my students these things, I worry that there might be someone present who lthinks “oh yeah… “ or
doesn’t believe me, even when I show the marks on my arms. Today, I can put all that imaginary doubt to bed and show you photographic evidence from one of those occasions when I was in my early twenties and had the nappy pin put through my arm… Here you go….
The Hypnotherapist Directory |
While you are at the college website, you may be interested in a couple of other bits and pieces that I have
written about there in the past week.
I wanted to share with you and announce that we have added a page here that contains a small listing of some of our graduates and those who have trained with the college who are practising professionals and many of whom have
thriving, busy professional practices. They are experienced and have been trained to the highest standards and as a result, we recommend them highly. If you are looking for a hypnotherapist in your locality, please seek out the services of these individuals to feature here as we firmly believe that they really are the among the best hypnotherapists available.
It is a new page, and we have plenty more people to add to it which we’ll keep on doing.
Please note, if you are one of our graduates reading this and missed some of the messages I sent out about this new hypnotherapist directory, and if you would like to feature here, please get in touch and I’ll be delighted to get you listed accordingly. Finally, at the college website I wrote to announce that my rapid inductions and hypnotic phenomena seminar for hypnotherapists is back!
Imagine the scene…. You’ve trained and qualified and are working with a client in your lovely fancy therapy room, the lights are dimmed, the chair is fully reclined, your client has a lovely crochet blanket draped across them, you pop on the whale music and yes, it’s time to affect your best “Hush FM DJ” voice, a sort of whispering-Barry-White-on-dope type of impression, and you punctuate every sentence
of your lengthy scenic descriptive deepened with those immortal words “deeper and deeper”……
The client starts to softly snore, completely unaware any longer that they are supposed to be in a hypnotherapy session, to the point
where you could be saying anything at all to them…. You emerge them at the end of the session, they rub their eyes the same way they would if they had just had a short nap (ironic?) and they utter those words that no hypnotherapist ever wants to hear and never should hear….
“…. it was a nice experience, but I am not sure I was really
hypnotised” or “it was very relaxing, but I am not convinced I was in hypnosis.”
Maybe you have heard it said by other hypnotherapist’s clients? I hear this a great deal from clients that went to see other hypnotherapists before coming to see me.
Following our rapid inductions and hypnotic phenomena seminar, your clients will never utter these words. They will leave your office undeniably convinced that they were hypnotised. They’ll explain to friends, family and colleagues how impressive their experience was, and your reputation, referred business levels and credibility will all rise together.
Let’s dispense with the reclining chair. Let’s dispense with the crochet blanket. Let’s dispense with the whale
music. Let’s dispense with the affected Hush FM DJ impressions. Let’s dispense with repeatedly saying “deeper and deeper” in monotone. Let’s dispense with the clichéd, outdated caricature of how hypnotherapists behave, and let’s get skilled up!
Quality hypnosis that creates wonderful
responsiveness needs none of these above things.

Onto our main articles this week then... |
I introduced the notion of ‘grit’ in one article this week because it is what I’ve needed in the gym in recent weeks. It has been testing day at the gym again and I have made some
pleasing progress. Ive posted a full explanation plus a couple of video clips of me squatting and benching for PBs here:
My main topic this week has been approval seeking. An online dictionary says this about approval seeking:
Seeking is defined as looking for something, or trying to achieve something. If you become a doctor because your parents want you to and you try desperately your whole life to get your parents to approve of you, this is an example of seeking approval.
This (above) is a common and fairly simple example, here are some other really common approval
seeking behaviours:
– Changing or softening a stance because someone appears to disapprove.
– Taking it personally and feeling upset or insulted if someone ever disagrees with
you.
– Outwardly agreeing with someone (verbally or non-verbally) when you do not actually agree with them.
– Doing something which you do not want to do because you are afraid
to say ‘No’
– Failing to stand up for your own rights.
– Engaging in gossip to gain attention or gain
acceptance.
– Seeking permission when it is not required.
– Consistently apologising for your words and actions even in the absence of others’ disapproval e.g. ‘I’m sorry
but..’
– Being afraid to admit that you lack understanding, expertise or that there is something you do not know. – Fishing for or expecting compliments and/or getting upset
if someone fails to do so.
You see, any behaviour which is contrary to your identity and purpose, or conflicts with your core beliefs, could be said to be done to gain the approval of someone else. This article is about how to stop approval seeking, it has a lot of good advice for most
people:

This week, I was sent some kids
style science jokes due to a debate I had at our forum online about science and hypnotherapy, here they are....
Old chemistry teachers never die, they just fail to react. What did the biologist wear on his first date? Designer jeans.
Why do tigers have stripes? So they don’t get spotted. What did the receiver say to the radio wave? Ouch! That megahertz. What do astronauts do when they get angry? Blast off! Where did the lightning bolt propose
to his girlfriend? Cloud 9. What did the volcano say to his wife? I lava you so much! What do you call two dinosaurs that have been in an accident? Tyrannosaurus wrecks
How do spacemen kill time on long trips? They play astronauts and crosses. Does a radioactive cat have 18 half-lives?
Love those. |
