Onto Adam Up
What a week it has been, I spent 4 days of it away with my family on our first ever Team Eason camping trip. We had such a great time. I wrote about it here on my main blog:

I wanted to illustrate how so many simple things can create so much happiness and well-being - things that are available to all of us at virtually any time, do go and have a good read.

I draw upon a lot of great sources when helping my individual hypnotherapy clients to be happier, elevate their mood or overcome depression.

While researching a few years ago, I was reading a great book by Assen Alladin entitled Cognitive Hypnotherapy and in it, he referred to using hypnosis to expand our awareness of and enhance affective experience.

What does that mean?

Well, it is really a way of us being aware of how we actually feel, knowing more about how we actually feel, realising how our feelings influence our thoughts, being able to articulate how we feel, and being able to subsequently take more control over those feelings (in order to take control we require more awareness of it).

“Hypnosis has been used to induce specific emotions in normal subjects (Hodge & Wagner, 1964). In the clinical situation the hypnotherapist’s task is not to suggest specific emotions to the patient but rather to bring the patients current emotional experience into full awareness.”

Brown & Fromm, cited in Hammond (1990).

I love that idea, and it really rings true with me following on from my camping trip this week.

The authors go on to suggest that many people are not actually aware of the full affect of the emotions they are experiencing and perhaps only really notice it in the heat of moments. They therefore recommend a particular technique for using hypnosis to enhance awareness of the affect of such emotions in certain situations in life, and once the affect is brought into awareness, show the client how they can recognise those affects in the future and ideally learn to cope with them effectively and eventually master them (the full affects of emotions).
Self-Awareness Of Feelings
self_awareness
In the therapy rooms of therapists who use this sort of process, it is likely to be used for dealing with negative feelings. Prior to dealing with unwanted feelings, emotions and their affects, learning to heighten awareness of them and understand them can be a precursor to other therapeutic interventions.  I recommend that this application is done with a qualified professional therapist.

However, it is also very useful when used to simply advance and enhance good feelings too – showing you how in control we all are of the affects of our emotions. So today, I offer you a self-hypnosis process for enhancing your affective experience, simply follow these steps:

Prior to step one, think of a typical time when you enjoy yourself. This could also be a time from the past when you have had a great experience, or a happy occasion, or something that you consistently consider to be a wonderful, uplifting experience. With that in mind, get yourself into a comfortable, seated position where you’ll be undisturbed for the duration of this session. Ideally with your feet flat on the floor and your arms not touching each other. Then process to step one.

Step One: Induce hypnosis.

You can do so by any means you desire or know of. You can use the process in my Science of Self-Hypnosis book, use the free audio at this website to practice or have a look at the following articles as and when you need them; they are basic processes to help you establish the hypnotic mindset:

Once you have induced hypnosis, move on to step two.

Step Two: Imagine the place or situation or event where you felt/feel good, as chosen prior to starting the session.
good place/feeling
See the sights, hear the sounds, and truly engage with this place. Make it as vivid as possible and tell yourself that each sight and sound takes you deeper into hypnosis as you focus and engage in it more.

Step Three: Now notice what you feel when you imagine being in this place.

The more time you spend vividly imagining being in this place, the more you become aware of the main emotions you experience in this situation.

Bring the feeling to the forefront of your awareness. Let the feeling become clearer and clearer. Don’t reach for it, just be gently assured that you’ll notice the main feeling to come to the fore in this enjoyable experience.  Take all the time necessary for you to spot and recognise the main feeling.

When you are aware of it, move on to the next step.

Step Four: Now describe the feeling to yourself.

Be as precise and exact as you possibly can. Act as a commentator describing that main feeling. Tell yourself what the feeling actually is and then move on to tell yourself (out loud or silently in your own head) how you experience this feeling – where is it in your body? What muscles do you hold when you have this feeling? What expression do you have on your face? What thoughts do you think when you feel this way? What images go through your mind? Do any other memories pop up?

Really develop your understanding and awareness of the feeling. Then move on to the next step.

Step Five: Now count from one through to ten and imagine that the feeling is growing and developing.
good feeling
Imagine the feeling gets bigger and stronger and spreads through your body.  You could give the feeling a colour or a sound, or you might just trust and believe that the feeling is building and growing stronger. Be gently assured of it without ‘willing’ it to happen.

Let it happen, believe in it, convince yourself of it growing and developing without exerting any anxiety.

Be aware of the developing feelings and let them continue to get stronger.  Show yourself that you can grow good feelings and trust your ability to be in control of the affects of your feelings and emotions.

Step Six: Understand the feeling, be aware of it and let it grow stronger until you are filled with a lovely sense of control and pleasant, enjoyable, beautiful, uplifting feelings to bask in and enjoy.

Tell yourself that you are in control of your feelings. Think about some aspects of your life whereby you’ll benefit from being able to feel better and develop good feelings, and when you have spent enough time enjoying those feelings, move on to the final step.

Step Seven: If you follow my own protocol from self-hypnosis, then count yourself up and out of hypnosis from 1 through to 5. Otherwise, wiggle your fingers and toes, take a couple of nice deeper breaths and open your eyes and reorient yourself accordingly.
The Past Week’s Favourite Things:
Ok, what have I been watching, reading, enjoying, rating this week?

1. Kampa Croyde Air 6 Tent: What can I say about this beauty. As a newbie to big family tents, I was worried about putting it up effectively with two hyped up pre-schoolers running amok at the same time, however, it was pretty easy to put up and is just covered in technology and features that I love. Three bedrooms, a carpeted inner room, a spacious entrance porch area, loads of opportunity to get air in (great as it was so hot) and just awesome. If you are thinking of camping with a family, I’d highly recommend this bad boy. 10/10

2. Outcast: This TV show is showing on Fox currently and is 6 episodes in. It caught my attention because it is produced by the same guys who do the Walking Dead, one of my favourite TV shows. This is a bit slow at times, but has snippets of very well constructed horror, a great supernatural element, and is gradually beginning to reveal more plot, I like it. 7/10

3. The Motivation Manifesto by Brendan Burchard: I was late to this book, it was a NY Times bestseller a while back, but I have been using it early in the mornings as part of my “up and at ‘em” ritual. I love it. The language pumps you up, it is written beautifully and has a number of chapters on owning your own life, being effective and motivated to live the life you choose. Love it. 9/10

More next week, not had much time this week.

Joke Of The Week
One for all my magician friends this week…..

A magician was working on a cruise ship in the Caribbean. The audience was different each week so he did same tricks over and over.

The problem was, the captain's parrot saw all the shows and began to understand how the magician did every trick.

He started shouting in the middle of the show:
'Look, it's not the same hat. Look,
he's hiding the flowers under the table.
Hey, why are all the cards the ace of spades?'

The magician was furious but, as it was the captain's parrot, he could do nothing. Then one day the ship sank and the magician found himself floating on a piece of wood with the parrot.

They glared at each other but said nothing. Finally, after a week, the parrot said: 'OK, I give up. Where's the boat?'

Enjoyed that, thanks to all of you who send the jokes in each week.
