June #2
Edition #551
Hello and welcome to this week's edition of Adam Up.
Running Comeback
You may or may not recall that just over 6 weeks ago, I injured myself and had to pull out of my planned marathons and ultra marathons for the first half of this year. I wrote about it here at my Hypnosis for Running hobby blog:

Comeback

This week, I wrote about my own comeback trail. You always knew I was going to want to blaze a comeback trail, didn’t you?

However, taking into account a bit of weight gain, my age, and a number of other factors really makes it a different proposition to the way I’d usually go about it.

So before I start to blaze the comeback trail, I needed to reflect, plan meticulously and this led me to some major existentialism and some close examination as to the reason I choose to continue running, and I wrote about it on my hypnosis for running blog this week.

This blog entry also includes one of the funniest photos I think I’ve ever included in a blog entry, for all the wrong reasons, go have a read:

Hypnosis Weekly - Dan Jones - Aspergers Syndrome and Hypnotherapy
The Hypnosis Weekly podcast this week is one that I found incredibly enjoyable to record and one which I also found to be incredibly illuminating.

I have known of Dan Jones for a number of years and we have crossed paths a few times. However, I only found out in recent weeks that he has Aspergers Syndrome. He recently released his autobiography which contains a candid account of how being a hypnotherapist helped him with his aspergers, and so I invited him to join me on the Hypnosis Weekly podcast so that we could discuss it.

As well as how hypnotherapy helped him personally, I also got to talk to him about his love for the Ericksonian approach and how he combines it with solution focused approaches with great effect for his therapy clints.

I think you’ll really enjoy this episode.
Advanced Hypnotherapy Diploma
June is here! It does not quite feel like Summer despite a couple of lovely days of sunshine here during the Bank Holiday weekend, at the end of this month I will be running our Advanced Hypnotherapy Diploma.

At the end of last year, I wrote what I consider to be a really important article about why hypnotherapists need advanced training and it really struck a chord with many, do go and have a read:
Hypnotherapy Training: I’m Frothing at the Mouth About Why Hypnotherapists Need More Advanced Training

Death Row Case
There has been a lot of media coverage regarding a particular case in the US which has some interest for us hypnosis professionals in particular.

Charles Don Flores is on death row in Texas having been found guilty of murder, yet there are numerous contentious issues in the case which you can read about at my article on the subject.

The main reason for my own interest is the way hypnosis was used to elicit eye witness testimony from a woman in the investigation and I have questioned it according to the evidence base on the subject.

You can read my thoughts, analysis and what the evidence says about this application of hypnosis here at my main website:

Many hypnosis professionals and hypnotherapists have asked me about what this means with regards to the use of regression in hypnotherapy and if you have similar thoughts and questions, you might like to read this series of articles I wrote 6 years ago, not much has changed to supersede or alter my view since writing them all that time ago, they are relevant to this high profile case in particular.

The risk of false memory syndrome and very real possibility of re-traumatisation are paradoxically increased when we follow informed consent and legal duty of care guidelines - that is, by warning people there is even the smallest risk involved when using regression, we raise the risks (of re-traumatisation in particular).

It raises major ethical questions about whether regression should be used at all by hypnotherapists.

Personal Stuff
I get asked a bunch of personal stuff each week by email and online comments so I thought I’d start offering up my responses and recommendations here too:

What I’m currently reading, watching and listening to:

1. Audiobook: Just finished listening to the epic fantasy novel (I am addicted to epic fantasy novels) by Jonathan Henshaw entitled Dawn Of Wonder: The Wakening.
I loved it.
It is a real coming of age novel which sets up much eager anticipation for the upcoming novels in the series.
I enjoyed this as much as I enjoyed Patrick Rothfuss’s first two books in the Kingkiller Chronicles (will you write the 3rd book already!!!). The character development, the attention to detail, the scenes being set, and my love for the protagonists and main characters in this book were wonderful, and it was not all happiness and light all the time, there was enough darkness to fill it with a lot of suspense. 10/10

2. TV Show: Game Of Thrones: This season has been awesome, much is coming together and I am too scared to root for my favourite characters as they are likely to be killed off. WOn’t say much more as I don’t want to spoil it. Really excited about the upcoming episode 9… Always contains thrills, battles and potentially the death of someone pivotal. 9/10

3. TV Series: Billions: My wife and I just finished watching this series. It is very slick, got some great actors in it, and pitches two ferociously motivated main characters against each other.
The world of finance and investing comes under scrutiny, I know we are supposed to be anti those rich guys, but Damian Lewis’s character Bobby Axelrood is the guy who’s side I took throughout this series.
Enjoyed it. 7/10

4. Professional Text: 1001 Solution Focused questions by Bannink. I liked this and was recommended it as a good way to distill the essence of solution focused approaches to therapy.
Not ground breaking stuff, but a good introductory text with some insightful ways of applying great questions whether in therapy or coaching. 7/10

5. Lifestyle Book: Joel Fuhrman’s book ‘Eat to Live’ - I'm convinced and converted!
Great science, great approach, made me happy and I will be eating in accordance with this book while I get on my comeback trail for running.
I made banana, cherry chocolate ice cream that tasted as good as any shop bought ice cream and it was healthy, dare I say it was actually good for me! 9/10

Next week, there’ll be a lot of football to report back on, Euro 2016 is about to kick off.

Come on England!!

Joke Of The Week
This week’s joke of the week, in line with much of our theme here, are one-liners and puns about classic psychotherapy and psychology….

1. He's a Freud of psychoanalysis.

2. I joined the Tourettes society today. It only took a minute to swear me in.

3. A Freudian slip is when you say one thing but you mean your mother.

4. Does the name Pavlov ring a bell?

5. Bell, Bark and Kennel, a novel by Ivan Pavlov, chronicles the birth of the Salivation Army.

6. I'm writing a book about reverse psychology. Please don't buy it.

7. How many psychologists does it take to change a light bulb?
How many psychologists do you think it takes to change a light bulb?

Loved those. Thank you to everyone who continues to send me in the jokes each week, I love getting them.
