Hello , Welcome To This Week's Adam
Up |
|
I have just been putting some final touches to a new audio set we are going to release soon.
The rather amusingly (albeit, in my personal opinion) titled "Tripnosis: The Hypnotic High Generator" is a set of four tracks aimed at - advancing mood,
- developing a natural 'high',
- and feeling really good.
Nothing else. I draw upon a lot of great material that is usually used in helping mood elevation with depressed clients for example, though many of the strategies are used for other issues in my
therapy rooms too. While researching for one of the processes, I was reading a great book by Assen Alladin entitled 'Cognitive Hypnotherapy,' and in it, he referred to using hypnosis to expand our awareness of and enhance affective experience.
What does that mean?
Well, it is really a way of us being aware of:
- how we actually feel,
- knowing more about how we feel,
- realising how our feelings influence our thoughts,
- being able to articulate how we feel,
- and being able to subsequently take more control over those feelings
(in order to take control we require more awareness of it).
"Hypnosis has been used to induce specific emotions in normal subjects (Hodge & Wagner, 1964). In the clinical situation the hypnotherapist's task is not to suggest specific emotions to the patient but rather to bring the patients current
emotional experience into full awareness." Brown & Fromm, cited in Hammond (1990). Continued... |
The authors go on to suggest that many people are not actually aware of the full affect of the emotions they are experiencing and perhaps only really notice it in the heat of moments. They therefore recommend a particular technique for using hypnosis to enhance awareness of the affect of such
emotions in certain situations in life, and once the affect is brought into awareness, show the client how they can recognise those affects in the future and ideally learn to cope with them effectively and eventually master them (the full affects of emotions) In the therapy rooms of therapists who use this sort of process, it is likely to be used for dealing with negative feelings. Prior to dealing with unwanted feelings, emotions and their affects, learning to heighten awareness of
them and understand them can be a precursor to other therapeutic interventions. I recommend that this application is done with a qualified professional therapist. However, it is also very useful when used to simply advance and enhance good feelings too - showing you how in control we all are of the affects of our emotions. So today, I offer you a self-hypnosis process for enhancing your affective experience, simply follow these
steps:
Six Steps To Control Your Feelings |
|
Prior to step one, think of a typical time when you enjoy yourself. This could
also be a time from the past when you have had a great experience, or a happy occasion, or something that you consistently consider to be a wonderful, uplifting experience. With that in mind, get yourself into a comfortable, seated position where you'll be undisturbed for the duration of this session. Ideally with your feet flat on the floor and your arms not touching each other. Then process to step one. |
Step Two:
Imagine the place or situation or event where you felt/feel good, as chosen prior to starting the session. See the sights, hear the sounds, and truly engage with this place. Make it as vivid as possible and tell yourself that each sight and sound takes you deeper into hypnosis as you focus and engage in it more. Step Three: Now notice what you feel when you imagine being in this place. The more time you spend vividly imagining being in this place, the
more you become aware of the main emotions you experience in this situation. Bring the feeling to the forefront of your awareness. Let the feeling become clearer and clearer. Don't reach for it, just be gently assured that you'll notice the main feeling to come to the fore in this enjoyable experience. Take all the time necessary for you to spot and recognise the main feeling. When you are aware of it, move on to the next
step. |
Step Four:Now describe the feeling to yourself. Be as precise and exact as you possibly can. Act as a commentator describing that main feeling. Tell yourself what the feeling actually is and then move on to tell yourself (out loud or silently in your own head) how you experience this feeling - where is it in your body? What muscles do you hold when you have this feeling? What expression do you have on your face?
What thoughts do you think when you feel this way? What images go through your mind? Do any other memories pop up? Really develop your understanding and awareness of the feeling. Then move on to the next step. Step Five:
Now count from one through to ten and imagine that the feeling is growing and developing. Imagine the feeling gets bigger and stronger and spreads through your body. You could give the feeling a colour or a sound, or you might just trust and believe that the feeling is building and growing stronger. Be gently assured of it without 'willing' it to happen. Let it happen, believe in it, convince
yourself of it growing and developing without exerting any anxiety. Be aware of the developing feelings and let them continue to get stronger. Show yourself that you can grow good feelings and trust your ability to be in control of the affects of your feelings and emotions. Step Six: Understand the feeling, be aware of it and let it grow stronger until you are filled with a lovely sense of control and pleasant, enjoyable, beautiful, uplifting feelings to bask in and enjoy.
Tell yourself that you are in control of your feelings. Think about
some aspects of your life whereby you'll benefit from being able to feel better and develop good feelings, and when you have spent enough time enjoying those feelings, move on to the final step. Step Seven: If you follow my own protocol from self-hypnosis, then count yourself up and out of hypnosis from 1 through to 5. Otherwise, wiggle your fingers and toes, take a couple of nice deeper breaths and open your eyes and reorient yourself accordingly. Enjoy tuning in to the affects of
emotions and feelings and see how it can lead to you being so much more in control of your feelings... And in the coming weeks, look out for my new audio set that'll have you developing hypnotic highs! References

Articles Of The Week
|
Here are a selection of topical articles that I enjoyed reading this week, often related to the fields of hypnosis, hypnotherapy, psychotherapy and other forms of personal development. Some may have just amused me or made me smile. My personal comments about them are in brackets and just because we feature an article here, it does not mean they represent my own views - most often, they do not! If you ever come across any related articles that you think
may feature well, then get in touch with me and we can share them here: - A story that has had lots of media attention this week - Pull Teeth using hypnosis to block pain: - In addition to the humorous clip I offered up last week, the Daily Mail have now covered this story too:
Mama June undergoes hypnosis to tackle her debilitating fear of Mayonnaise: - Many newspapers and websites have covered this story - Katy Perry 'erases John with hypnotherapy' - a story filled with misconception and nonsense - you can't erase stuff from your brain with hypnosis, you can help people deal with break-ups, but this story is a bit silly: - This week's nonsense story about a misleading application of hypnosis can be found here: Awakening Past Lives - Ottawa native hypnotising people on Lifetime network: - Finally, I thought I'd mention the Change Phenomena hypnosis conference again. Many of those from my school are going
this year and it is the best hypnosis conference around in my opinion, do come and join us: More next time.

Joke Of The Week Following on from last week's puns, I was sent on these couple of therapy related beauties: I've just seen a client with an
obsession with Samsonite luggage. I thought, wow this is going to be a tough case. I've got another client with an addiction to Windolene, but I can see clearly how to deal with that.
Hahaha, I love those. Thank you to Peter Hall for sending those in, very much appreciated. Thank you to everybody who continues to contribute to the jokes in the Hub and those who email me jokes every week. I love getting them. |

Helen Johnstone Hypnotherapist, Hampshire, UK "I attended the 10 month course which ran from October 2011 to July 2012. The course is interesting, fun, fast
paced, encouraging, confidence building, skill packing and very professionally run by Adam and his team. Realistically, it required a lot of committment in time and effort, which in reality was easy to give with the knowledge and new zest for learning that Adam's enthusiasm brings. Adam and his team were of constant support to me throughout the course and I feel lucky to be able to consider them to be good friends and confidantes
now. I have qualified and feel confident that the knowledge, confidence, skills and practical experience I have gained during this course will serve me very well in practice." MORE TESTIMONIALS HERE
