- Hello and welcome to the latest edition of Adam Up
How is 2024 going for you so far?
I have been working with a new coach. She tells me that my audience need to see more of me. That is, they need to actually SEE me. I'm not always altogether comfortable with this for a variety of reasons. However, in the past week, I've been sharing loads of video snippets online. If you want to get a sense of me, who I am, how I teach, then I'll be sharing practical
skills and demonstrations in coming weeks too, so you can follow my social media feeds. Today, I'm sharing videos covering some stimulating topics such as self-hypnosis as a self-regulated skill, the importance of self-efficacy in hypnosis, how the therapeutic alliance aids an over activated amygdala and how when people insist that hypnosis is about dissociation, they can't account for self-hypnosis. I hope you find them interesting.
We have also extended the date for
participation in our latest hypnosis research project at Bournemouth University - you can take part online and from the comfort of your own home.... The Effect of Hypnosis and Psychological Skills Training on Stroop Task Performance This study is investigating the effects of hetero-hypnosis and psychological skills according to how they compare when measured in terms of performance in a computer game called the Stroop task. The study is being conducted as part of
my (Adam Eason) Bournemouth University research and it is hoped that the findings will be published and as a consequence help to contribute to potential clinical applications of hypnosis. We think you'll find it interesting and stimulating. You can complete this study in your own time from the comfort of your home or anywhere that you have computer access that is free from distractions. To register as a participant in this study, please type your name and
email address in the boxes below and you will be sent on your access and step-by-step guide via email accordingly. If you have an interest in hypnosis and hypnosis research, then simply visit this page to register your details and I'll guide you through the study from there. It'll be something really cool to take part in this weekend!
I've also got a couple of new articles for you below covering topics of self-loathing and asking yourself questions for major self-development.
My evidence-based meme of the week returned in 2024! the latest one is included here today also...

Articles & Videos: What's New? A wide range of new articles to help in varying aspects of life here today...
|
New videos:
1. In this brief video, Adam is affirming that in order for something to constitute self-hypnosis, it needs to be self-regulated, self-directed and instructions self-suggested and contests what some deem as self-hypnosis (maybe more accurate to be deemed “hypnotist absent
hypnosis). Watch video clip here: Self-Hypnosis: Self-regulated, self-directed, Self-Suggested 2. Tiny snippet from a lecture last year where I was explaining that dissociative theories of hypnosis struggle to account for self-hypnosis; that is, if you
need to relinquish control to another individual who essentially takes over the executive functioning of the hypnotised subject when you explain hypnosis, how do you account for a self-regulated experience of hypnosis? Watch video clip here: Can Dissociation Theories Account for
Self-Hypnosis? 3. In this snippet from a recent lecture, Adam explains the importance of building efficacy in the clinical hypnotherapy environment and how that advances the individual hypnotic responsiveness. Watch video clip here: The Importance of Self-Efficacy in
Hypnosis 4. Research tends to support the notion of the working alliance between patient and therapist being one of the best predictors of successful therapeutic outcomes, so we discuss it and how to advance it often within my hypnotherapy training classes. However, there is a neuroscientific benefit of the working alliance too, as Adam discusses briefly here – the way it helps soothe over activation of the subcortical regions of the brain.

New Articles:
All articles are founded in science and have
references for you to explore should you wish: 1. Those who have studied with me know that I tend to illustrate key points during my training and presentations with cultural references of varying kinds, and in particular, I make reference to one of my all-time favourite TV shows Red Dwarf. In it, there is a character called Arnold Rimmer who is made complex and quirky as a result of his self-loathing and disappointment with himself. It is the
topic of self-loathing that I am referring to here today. “I assure you there is richer, thicker, cozier blanket (than self-acceptance) to carry through the world. There is a realm infinitely more mind-blowing. It is called radical self-love” – Sonya Renee Taylor.
Self-Loathing is the act of disliking oneself intensely. This includes hating the way one looks and is as a person. There could be various reasons for self-loathing ranging from an overly
critical parent who never made us feel like we belong or are good enough, a huge failure in life that we were not able to come to terms with or a side-effect of social and performance and anxiety. While self-loathing especially in the current times we live in with the Generation Z normalising self-deprecating humour and culturally transitioning into a space where they “appear” to take themselves less seriously, there is also a serious epidemic of people experiencing extreme body dysmorphia, a
rise in cosmetic surgery, and intense mental health issues. People are today most vocal about the fragmented relationship they share with themselves which is often based on self-disgust and perpetually comparing oneself to other people on social media. Self-loathing is not simply disliking oneself and if not dealt with at time can become a grave mental health concern leading to depression and anxiety disorders. The bright side to this problem is that with consistent inner work
and self-awareness, one can undo this psychological pattern and can reach a more neutral relationship with themselves... Read full article here: What is Self-Loathing and How to Overcome It. 2. “An unexamined life is not worth living” –
Socrates The ancient Greek Philosopher Socrates declared many years ago that a life void of self-reflection and introspection is a life wasted – guess he was right! Self-reflection is consciously asking ourselves questions about our thoughts, feelings, and experiences in life. I spend a lot of time teaching student hypnotherapists the right kinds of questions to ask client in the clinical environment, but today I’m writing about questions to ask yourself for your
own development and growth. Asking oneself questions is a valuable tool for personal growth which entails actively working on one’s attitudes, habits, and overall well-being in life, helping us understand ourselves and live a more fulfilling existence. The trick however, lies in answering these questions with utmost honesty and to approach them with curiosity to know and challenge oneself. Feelings and thoughts, when turned into questions for your own self, seem a lot less
daunting and come from a place of much more compassion; compelling one to dig deeper into why a certain uncomfortable emotion surfaced in the first place instead of rushing to harsh conclusions about your own self and life in general. This mental exercise also brings an element of objectivity into your life whereby you can detach from a heightened emotional state. This journey not only requires compassion, but it also requires deep compassion and letting go of shame. One must
understand that everyone is on a unique journey, coming from diverse experiences in life and one must try to answer each question with as much authenticity as one can trying their best to not mimic someone else’s life. This article offers up a range of Questions to Ask Yourself for Personal Growth and Development... Read full article here: Questions to Ask Yourself for Personal Growth and Development.

Embark on a journey of self-improvement through the powerful practice of self-hypnosis? How to do that though?
Over the years I’ve made a lot of resources available to help people learn all they can about self-hypnosis. I thought I’d put as many of them as possible all in one place for easy access and to have somewhere to send people when they ask me about exploring and learning about science-supported,
research-informed, evidence-based self-hypnosis.

AVAILABLE NOW! ACT for Hypnotherapists.
I have been using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) with
my clients for years now in conjunction with hypnotherapy. I discuss it often on my courses but never in any great deoth or detail. I have sought to remedy that with a recent small series entitled ACT for Hypnotherapists which I ran at the end of last year.
I have just made this training programme available for purchase, you can read more details about it at this page of the college website: ACT for Hypnotherapists.
The course is included and can be accessed in full if you are a member of my Hypnotherapist Development Hub. The full course is part of and available in the hub now, visit the link here for full
details on how to subscribe to it monthly or annually.
In recent weeks, my social media output has been filled with video clips of me squatting at the gym, lots of evidence-based memes citing the latest hypnosis research, photos from my life and loads of articles from our
vaults and some other bits and pieces. You can follow and keep up to date here: The evidence based hypnosis meme of the week is below....
