- Hello and welcome to the latest edition of Adam Up
I hope that the year is going well for you and that January didn't prove to be a long drag for you as it does with so many of us.
Having spent the backend of 2023 banging on about it and focusing my training upon the Hyrox event in Manchester, I have to admit that the event humbled me! For those of you unaware, HYROX combines both running and functional workout stations, where all those
competing run 1km, followed by a functional workout station (1km SkiErg, heavy sled push, heavy sled pull, broad jump burpees, 1km row, Farmers carry, sandbag lunges, 100 wall balls) repeated eight times. I had not done enough running training and took that for granted having been an endurance athlete in years gone by. The high intensity of the event meant that I simply could not regulate my heart rate and suffered in the latter stages of the event. What a learning experience for me though - and
I shall be heading up to the Birmingham event later this year to do it better and faster now that I know what to expect and what is required of me. Great fun though, especially as I was there with a large group of friends from my gym. Highly recommended. You can take a look at the official photos of me competing at Hyrox here. Within this
issue, I am making a rare mention of the Emile Coué scholarship programme that I offer two students each academic year. If you are interested in studying our hypnotherapy practitioner diploma course, but have been unable to enrol due to financial constraints, take a read of the details below about our scholarship offering. Today, I'm offering articles about how to increase dopamine and oxytocin, and videos of me discussing the value of interoception of hypnotherapy clients, how
hypnosis benefits from being positioned as a collaborative process, I champion evidence based approaches to hypnosis and debate why some hypnotherapists seem to be less responsive to hypnotic suggestions than others. My evidence-based meme of the week returned in 2024! the latest one is included here today also...

Articles & Videos: What's New? A wide range of new articles to help in varying aspects of life here today...

New videos:
1. Adam briefly refers to being called a “science-fascist” due to his favoured evidence-based approach to teaching hypnotherapy and self-hypnosis. Adopting critical thinking, yielding one’s position in the face of better evidence is championed here… Watch Video: Championing Evidence-Based Practice: Embracing Critical Thinking. 2. Could it be that some hypnosis professionals believing that being ‘zonked out’ is how to be hypnotised actually be rendering them less responsive to hypnosis? Does “being totally out of it” represent being a good
responsive hypnotic subject? Watch Video: Why Are Some Hypnosis Professionals Less Responsive to Hypnotic Suggestions? 3. In this video clip Adam explains that hypnotic responses are not 100% the responsibility of the hypnotist; they
have a role that needs to be explained to them so that they can adopt the right mindset and actively increase responsiveness. As an active agent, the collaboration enhances the hypnosis. Watch Video: Hypnosis as a Collaborative Process. 4. In this video clip, Adam discusses the importance of
the Insula region of the brain which enables interoception and an ability recognise and explain one’s own emotions. Hypnotherapists may subsequently need to help their clients activate that part of their brain to advance therapeutic outcomes. On his courses Adam teaches a range of ways to help clients do that. Watch Video: The Power of Interoception & Insula Activation in Hypnotherapy.
New Articles:
All articles are founded in science and have references for you to explore should you
wish: 1. Have you ever wanted to increase your pleasure without resorting to difficult solutions? Look no further – today I’m writing about increasing dopamine levels naturally. What’s more, I’m going to be focusing on really simple tips and applications to naturally boost your dopamine levels. Instead of focusing on supplements or specific dietary plans (which you can still apply, there’s plenty of great information out there on such
topics and approaches) and focus instead on these simple, habitual approaches that you can use in your daily life. You may easily trigger the feel-good factor in your brain by making a few little changes to your habits and mindset. Brace yourself for a happier version of you! Read Full Article: How to
Naturally Increase Dopamine Levels. 2. In recent years, with rising mental health concerns globally but particularly in the Western world, there has been growing attention given to detoxing from social media and stepping back from the noise of the competitive world and instead seeking out natural ways of maintaining one’s happiness and well-being. As discussed in my previous article about increasing dopamine levels, one of these ways is to boost the
happy hormones in our body! Oxytocin, also known as the “love hormone” is one such example of a mood boosting hormone which helps enrich our social bonds with other people, making us feel a sense of joy and belonging. Released first at the time of childbirth to nourish the baby’s bond with the mother, Oxytocin can be simply described as a hormone or neurotransmitter that our brain releases into our bloodstreams to strengthen our capacity to love, trust, and care for people around
us. Following on from the time of childbirth and deepening the mother-child bond, it extends to our friendships, family relationships, and especially romantic/sexual partnerships. You might also have heard about some other happy hormones like serotonin, dopamine, and endorphins. The way these hormones differ from oxytocin is the way which oxytocin releases a sense of pleasure.
For instance, oxytocin lifts your mood because the pleasurable emotion that we derive from it is
that of trust and care for a loved one; however, on the other hand a hormone like serotonin maintains your anxiety and depression levels, dopamine is usually tied in with making you feel good about yourself when you achieve an important task, and endorphins are commonly produced through laughter or being able to enjoy a good meal. Hence, if you are looking to improve your relationships and feel a surge of love, Oxytocin is the distinct hormone that will get you there. Luckily,
there are some natural ways of increasing the production of Oxytocin in our body. These need to be consistently maintained; otherwise, the body might form extremely strong coping mechanisms against getting hurt and turmoil which might block or weaken the impact of the release of oxytocin. Each year, we have a number of people who download the prospectus for our hypnotherapy practitioner diploma course but for whom it is inaccessible due to financial constraints and not being able to afford the fee. So a few years ago, I developed our Emile Coué
scholarship programme (Emile Coué is a hero of mine from the history of hypnosis that you learn plenty about on the diploma course) to make the course accessible to a candidate or two each academic year. In those years, I have never offered it publicly like this, I've simply offered it to people who have expressed their challenges and for whom I have felt have been a good fit for this college and were really motivated to study with this college in particular. In short, the
scholarship offers attendance upon our full live (classroom attendance or livestream) diploma course for half the usual fee, for 1 person on each of our diploma courses. The usual fee is reduced greatly (by 50%) from it's usual £2760.00 to £1380.00. If you would like to enrol upon our diploma course but have been unable due to financial constraints, have read the course prospectus and therefore are aware of the dates of the course you wish to enrol upon, and would like to be considered for one
of our two scholarship places (one for our upcoming intensive course starting next month, one for our upcoming monthly course starting in October this year) then please reply to this email along with the following information: 1. Your own personal explanation of why you wish to be a hypnotherapist. 2. Which course you'd like to apply to join with the scholarship place. 3. Anything else that you'd like to add with regards to being considered for a scholarship
place. I hope if you've found it financially non-viable in the past that this will make our diploma course accessible to you and that you'll get in touch and apply for this opportunity.

Embark on a journey of self-improvement through the powerful practice of self-hypnosis? How to do that though?
Over the years I’ve made a lot of resources available to help people learn all they can about self-hypnosis. I thought I’d put as many of them as possible all in one place for easy access and to have somewhere to send people when they ask me about exploring and learning about science-supported,
research-informed, evidence-based self-hypnosis.

Big Updates in our Hypnotherapist Development Hub.
1. Finding and Understanding
Hypnosis Research: The recording of the webinar I ran last week on this topic is now available and accessible in the hub. 2. Hypnosis Audio of the week: Hypnotherapists benefit from self-care and hypnosis too, right? And we often neglect ourselves or find it tough to work with colleagues or other professionals to receive hypnosis sessions. Therefore, I decided that I'd add a section to the hub that will include a hypnosis audio track for yu to use
every week. I have added a few tracks already to start the year off. I am simply adding sessions that I think are stimulating, enjoyable and beneficial, and highly recommend that you engage with them in the way you'd advise a client to do - that is to be an active agent in the process and not be passive; collaborate with the audio, adopt your hypnotic mindset. Importantly though, find some time to spend with yourself each week with a hypnosis session and enjoy some time for
yourself. 3. Latest diploma footage: The latest footage of the updated and current diploma course is now live and added to the hub - for the first time, you'll see a recording of me conducting a regression session demonstration. We have Dr Sue Peacock and Dr Rachel Gillibrand speaking on some really interesting topics in the hub later in February and March that our members can join live too.
There is so much more included and
that can be accessed in full if you are a member of my Hypnotherapist Development Hub. Visit the link here for full details on how to subscribe to it monthly or annually.
In recent weeks, my social media output has been filled with video clips of me squatting at the gym, lots of evidence-based memes citing the latest hypnosis research, photos from my life and loads of articles from our
vaults and some other bits and pieces. You can follow and keep up to date here: The evidence based hypnosis meme of the week is below....
