- Hello and welcome to the latest edition of Adam Up
Happy New Year - well, we're 10 days in already, but this is the first edition of Adam Up in 2024.
This is a shorter than usual edition of my Adam Up Ezine broadcast that I'm sending out to anyone who has ever expressed any kind of interest in any aspect of my work or courses - mainly with the aim of seeing if you'd be interested in taking part in my current hypnosis research study that is being
conducted at the Bournemouth University Psychology department:
The Effect of Hypnosis and Psychological Skills Training on Stroop Task Performance This study is investigating the effects of hetero-hypnosis and psychological skills according to how they compare when measured in terms of performance in a computer game called the Stroop task. The study is being conducted as part of my (Adam Eason) Bournemouth University research and it is hoped that the findings will
be published and as a consequence help to contribute to potential clinical applications of hypnosis. We think you'll find it interesting and stimulating. You can complete this study in your own time from the comfort of your home or anywhere that you have computer access that is free from distractions. The study runs on two consecutive days. The entire process is likely to take approx. 90 minutes on the first day and approx 60 minutes on the second day. Some take less
time. Please ensure that if you wish to participate, you have enough time to complete the programme in full without being rushed or needing to cut corners. It requires you to be focused and to dedicate your attention without distraction and use a laptop or desktop computer with a keyboard. To that end, you will need to ensure you will not be disturbed during the time the programme is running. To register as a participant in this study, please type your name and
email address in the boxes below and you will be sent on your access and step-by-step guide via email accordingly. If you have an interest in hypnosis and hypnosis research, then simply visit this page to register your details and I'll guide you through the study from there. It'll be something really cool to take part in this weekend!
I've also got a bunch of new articles for you below covering topics of incorporating acceptance into your daily life, learning self-hypnosis, embracing your uniqueness and not settling for second best.
My evidence-based meme of the week returns in 2024! There's been so much great hypnosis research that I am keen to share...

Articles: What's New?
A wide range of new articles to help in varying aspects of life here today...
|
All articles are founded in science and have references for you to explore should you wish:
1. Embark on a journey of self-improvement through the powerful practice of self-hypnosis? How to do that though?
Over the years I’ve made a lot of resources available to help people learn all
they can about self-hypnosis. I thought I’d put as many of them as possible all in one place for easy access and to have somewhere to send people when they ask me about exploring and learning about science-supported, research-informed, evidence-based self-hypnosis. Here 2. Life is far from perfect, it is inevitable that life has ups and downs, happiness and pain. Whether it be a personal insecurity, anxiety about an upcoming event or the job that we have, or it might be something more intense like grieving the death of a closed one, and sometimes, our trigger could be completely outside of ourselves emerging from another person who we might dislike or in some cases envy. Any unpleasant feeling whether it be
insecurity, fear, or grief creates anxiety which if resisted and not dealt with can develop into constant self-loathing, jealousy, anger, and ruined relationships with others and oneself.
Oftentimes, the word acceptance sounds like a passive state eliciting that one is supposed to give up and accept defeat in terms of whatever they dislike in their lives. It is quite the opposite however, as without acceptance, there can be no change. Acceptance is not the only path to change but surely
is emerging as a major pre-requisite. To be able to overcome something unpleasant in our lives, we need to first accept the trigger at hand, our feelings about it, evaluate the situation both subjectively and objectively and then be able to zoom out and take any sort of action. If we fail to accept adversity, we are only avoiding our emotions and building up resentment and self-hate which might explode at any moment. I recently ran an ‘ACT for Hypnotherapists’ course and spent
time emphasising the evidence for, and the importance of incorporating acceptance into our lives.
This article offers a number of ways to incorporate acceptance into your daily life... Read Full Article Here: Ways To Incorporate Acceptance Into Your Daily
Life 3. “True belonging is the spiritual practice of believing in and belonging to yourself so deeply that you can share your most authentic self with the world and find sacredness in both being a part of something and standing alone in the wilderness. True belonging doesn’t require you to change who you are; it requires you to be who you are.” – Brene Brown.
Human beings are all different; physically, emotionally, and
mentally. However, the culture we live in today can seem at times as though it is a culture based on self-loathing, comparison, and running after versions of ourselves which only exist as mirages. The reason that we as human beings indulge in these bouts of self-hate is because we want to be liked, accepted, and to belong. To belong is the most primal human urge; however, the anxiety and self-doubt kicks in when one denies themselves the freedom to be themselves just in order to fit in. When we
deny ourselves self-expression and do things which make us happy, we set ourselves for anxiety and resentment.
This is why it is important for us to understand ourselves and embrace our unique differences whether they be physical or emotional as only accepting our uniqueness can help us lead a truly fulfilling life. The problem arises when we start putting other people on pedestals and try to become like them and start chasing something that was never ours in the first place. We only
belong to ourselves and as Brene Brown says in this opening quote, true belonging can only take place if we show up in our lives as our authentic selves. However, with inner work and self-awareness, it is easier to do.
Here I’m offering a number of ways of why and how we can embrace our uniqueness. Read Full Article Here: 20 Ways to Embrace Your Uniqueness and Why 4. There are many decisions to make in life, and sometimes, it’s simpler to go with what you know, even if it means settling for what is less than ideal. The practise of settling can become a barrier to your pleasure and personal development. It might involve taking less than you deserve in many areas of life, accepting work that doesn’t complete you, or just tolerating relationships that don’t
live up to your expectations.
I’m delving into the practise of releasing ourselves from the grip of settling for less in this post. It may be time to take control of your life by applying some or all of the following techniques that can help you transform your perspective and move past the idea that “good enough” will do. We’ll look at doable strategies that can help you get to a place in the future when settling for less than the best becomes a thing of the past, from resetting your
standards to building resilience and self-awareness. So come along on this life-changing adventure with us if you’re prepared to push yourself beyond your comfort zone, reevaluate your priorities, and seize the chances that lie beyond the usual. The aim here is to examine how to raise your bar, overcome your fear of the unknown, and design a life reflecting your abilities. It’s time to accept the extraordinary and let go. Additional Resources: Adam's latest open source research paper, & lots of self-hypnosis and hypnotherapy resources...

As I mentioned in the previous Adam Up broadcast, I have just had a paper published on the ScienceDirect website, in the Elsevier peer reviewed journal Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice. Bournemouth University have paid for it to be open source so it is not hidden behind a paywall and you can read the full article entitled 'The Importance of highlighting the role of self in hypnotherapy and
hypnosis.'
The (DOI) article link: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ctcp.2023.101810
I'm seeking to revitalise the exploration and research of the topic of self-hypnosis and will be publishing results from our lab next year. This narrative review makes recommendations for future research that we have been addressing at
Bournemouth University. A couple of important points made in this paper:
- Highlighting the importance of the self in hypnotherapy and hypnosis by considering the concept of self-hypnosis. - We show that historically the self was an important component of the concept of hypnosis. - It is illustrated how extant theories emphasise the role of the self in hypnosis. - Self-hypnosis is largely indistinguishable from hetero-hypnosis and is as effective
as hetero-hypnosis. - Highlighting the role of the patient could increase the uptake of hypnotherapy.
Hope you find it stimulating and enjoyable.

AVAILABLE NOW! ACT for Hypnotherapists.
I have been using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) with my clients for years now in conjunction with hypnotherapy. I discuss it often on my courses but
never in any great deoth or detail. I have sought to remedy that with a recent small series entitled ACT for Hypnotherapists which I ran at the end of last year.
I am about to make this into a full online training programme and it will be available in coming weeks.
The course is included and can be accessed in full if you are a member of my Hypnotherapist Development Hub. The full course is already available in the hub now, visit the link here for full details on how to subscribe to it monthly or annually.
In recent weeks, my social media output has been filled with video clips of me squatting at the gym, lots of evidence-based memes citing the latest hypnosis research, photos from my life and loads of articles from our
vaults and some other bits and pieces. You can follow and keep up to date here: The evidence based hypnosis meme of the week is below....
Mindful hypnotherapy
proved to be significantly more effective at two-month follow-up than waiting list control group among females in treating a major depressive disorder. The intervention comprised of 8 face-to-face, 60-minute weekly therapy sessions along with mindful hypnosis audio tracks to be used daily. Self-compassion and psychological flexibility increased significantly in the hypnotherapy group also. Authors conclude that this study indicates mindful hypnotherapy is an
effective intervention for treating depression. Khazraee, Bakhtiari, Kianimoghadam & Ghorbanikhah (2023)
