It's the very end of February, March starts tomorrow and with it, the hope and emergence of the Spring season here in the UK. The article cited in today's subject line was written much earlier this month, and was not written with the current conflict in mind, but feels apt currently given the courage being shown by the citizens of Ukraine currently.
This edition of Adam Up includes articles about the effect of isolation upon the brain, how to use stress management to improve your efficiency, how to let go of the need to be in control and an article all about some famous quotes and their back story. I add daily posts to my social media accounts too (Instagram
and Facebook in particular) with insight from the fields of hypnotherapy and psychology, so if these articles and topics whet your appetite you can get much more by following those.
I've been back at the gym working on new goals for this year, and my weightlifting progress is being shared each day on my Instagram and Facebook stories where I'm holding myself accountable. I'm back in the lab at Bournemouth University with our latest research experiment that is examining response times with the Stroop task as well as measuring pupil sizes when hypnotised to gauge how much volition/effort our
participants put into the cognitive tasks when hypnotised and when not. It is hard work, but fascinating.
The hypnotherapist development hub has been underway too, you may recall I mentioned it in last months edition of this broadcast. Every Wednesday evening, I've been hanging out with fellow hypnotherapists for supervision, CPD and peer support.
I have also been announcing the fact that the 2022 UK Hypnosis Convention is up and running and we are really excited to tell you all about it.

1. A lot of people would argue speech is what made us the way we are right now.
On a biological level, the ability to speak, read and write has led to massive differences in our brains, and on a psychological level, the effects are sometimes even more significant.
The talent to use words correctly in any form is undeniable in some people, and we can see how they can single-handedly turn the whole world upside down with just a few speeches.
In all the different spheres of psychology, words are the most used tools, which is a statement of how powerful they are.
The right sentences can change the minds of everyone reading or hearing them and do so with ease.
Here in this article, I have listed some of the most famous quotes by modern psychologists in an attempt to show just how magical and powerful words can be.
2. Living more courageously requires us to live as fearlessly as possible and appropriate.
We should be willing to try pretty much anything and everything. Unfortunately, most of us let a variety of fears run our lives for us. We all have fears. We are all afraid of something. And it is okay because this is part of what makes us human. However, letting our fears totally control our lives can create limitations and barriers to fulfilment and enhanced well-being and hold us back from our potential. It can lead to
stagnation, negatively affecting your personal, emotional, and professional growth.
On the other hand, being courageous allows us to respond to risks and threats effectively and achieve positive things in life. It enables us to see past our fear, work with it or overcome it, and accomplish more of the most important things for us. It also boosts our self-confidence and pushes us to step out of our comfort zone.
Contrary to what most of us believe, being courageous doesn’t necessarily mean being totally fearless. Courage knows that there is something to be afraid of and responds appropriately despite the fear. According to Plato, courage is “the virtue of the spirited part [of the soul] .” There are many instances in our life where we have to be brave and face our fears.
In this article, I’m sharing eight ways to help you embrace courage and move forward.
3. With the global pandemic happening in the world right now, many of us are thinking about how isolation can affect us and how it has affected us already given that so many of us have been living with a range of restrictions for the past two years now.
There’s a lot we can all learn from a situation like this however, which is why I thought I’d write about it a bit in addition to that which I am discussing in my classrooms and with clients.
4. Here today, I want to help you understand stress from a psychological perspective, symptoms, and effects, and what to do whenever you find yourself drowning in this common psychological challenge.
The key message? Instead of stress using your body to work against you, by understanding it, you can use it to be effective, improve your performance, and your overall response to stressful situations.
5. Do you find yourself trying to control things you have absolutely no control over? Wanting everything to turn out precisely the way you want it to be?
According to Tanvi Patel, a psychotherapist, “relentless craving to control everything has many possible explanations.” Some people want to be in control of everything because they had very little control while growing up. On the other hand, some people crave control due to their need to be a perfectionist.
On my hypnotherapy practitioner diploma course, I explain that it is quite a common contributory factor to some forms of depression to attempt to control the uncontrollable or to have an inability to tolerate ambiguity (that is, some people feel they have to know something for sure and cannot cope with not knowing).
Although giving up control may not come easy to some people as it can feel as if we are relinquishing power and stability, the harsh reality is that trying to control everything robs us of our freedom and can lead to frustration and overwhelm. Giving up control every once in a while can be so good. It can bring joy and peace to our life. It adds unpredictability into our lives and opens new possibilities that we maybe didn’t even know existed. So, if you are a bit of a control freak, let things
happen for a change instead of trying to make them happen all the time. You will notice how liberating it can be. Letting go of control is essential when something is beyond your control. Trying to control the uncontrollable can set you up for disappointment, unrealistic expectations, unhappiness, stress, and pain. So, it would actually do you well if you learned to effectively let go.
Contrary to what so many of us believe, letting go and voluntarily giving up control is not an act of cowardice. Trying to resist the craving to control everything and moving on, at times that call for resignation, requires a lot of strength and courage. As Steve Cuoco, founder and CEO of United Angels Dream has rightly said, “The meaning of bravery is more than the act of being strong; it is also about letting go of
control and trusting the unknown.”

World Class Speakers:
1. Since we made public announcements about the 2022 UK Hypnosis Convention last week, I've been taken aback by the response we've had, the enthusiasm and appetite for it. In March, we'll announce the full speaker line-up. For now I'm delighted to announce that our Keynote speaker for the 2022 event will be Irving Kirsch.
For those less aware; Irving Kirsch is Associate Director of the Program in Placebo Studies and the Therapeutic Relationship, and a lecturer on medicine at the Harvard Medical School. He has published 10 books, more than 250 scientific journal articles and 40 book chapters on placebo effects, antidepressant medication, hypnosis, and suggestion. He originated the concept of response expectancy. Kirsch’s 2002
meta-analysis on the efficacy of antidepressants influenced official guidelines for the treatment of depression in the UK. His 2008 meta-analysis was covered extensively in the international media and listed by the British Psychological Society as one of the “10 most controversial psychology studies ever published.” His book, The Emperor’s New Drugs: Exploding the Antidepressant Myth was the topic of 60 Minutes segment on CBS and a 5-page cover story in Newsweek.
Those attending the gala dinner at the convention on the Saturday night will be able to enjoy Irving's keynote presentation about the myth of antidepressants. On Saturday afternoon, in the main lecture theatre, he will deliver his presentation: Using Hypnosis as a Non-Deceptive Extra-Strength Placebo, which will examine similarities between hypnosis and the placebo effect. More detailed synopsis will feature on
our presentation list when announced in March.
I'm honoured that he is going to be our keynote speaker and hope you are as excited as I am about this rare opportunity to see him present live in the UK.
2. Delighted to announce today that another one of our academic speakers presenting at the 2022 UK Hypnosis Convention in November, is Éva I. Bányai, PhD, who is a Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, Hungary. After earning her doctorate in psychology in 1973, she spent a fellowship year with Ernest
Hilgard at Stanford University where she developed active-alert hypnosis.
Her main research interest is studying the psychophysiological, behavioural, phenomenological, and social aspects of hypnosis from an interactional standpoint. She has been involved in developing new hypnotherapeutic methods for healing cancer patients, and in conducting research on the effect of hypnosis in treating high-risk breast cancer patients. She is the recipient of numerous awards for her
contributions in advancing the field of hypnosis.
Professor Banyai's presentation is titled: Basic Research With an Interactional Perspective on the Nature of Hypnosis After summarising the theoretical considerations standing in the background of the approach of hypnosis from an interactional perspective, she will describe the complex, multidimensional experimental paradigm her research team has been using since 1982. They have been studying the
physiological, behavioural, subjective experiential, and relational characteristics of both participants (hypnotist and subject) of the hypnosis interaction simultaneously, and analyse the interrelationship of these factors that play an important role in the development of hypnosis. Their results indicate that hypnosis is especially effective in mediating social support because it develops a strong, intensive interpersonal relationship between hypnotist and hypnotised subject. The
presentation will detail and explain this.
This is another very rare opportunity to see a true hypnosis academic pioneer presenting live.

The Anglo European College Hypnotherapist Development Hub:
This hypnotherapist development hub has just gone live and you can read more about it and subscribe monthly or annually by visiting the official page for it here at this page of the college website.
It is an online members area with live weekly offerings aimed at educating, developing and supporting hypnotherapists. This includes:
– Extensive digital resources: educational training videos available to stream, including our diploma course, advanced diploma, hypnotic coaching course, rapid inductions, science of self-hypnosis, additional specialist lectures, much more (similar to existing members area).
– Monthly specialist live lecture: Including a range of specialist lectures from academics, authors and experienced specialists. Attend live and get to ask questions and interact with leaders in the field, but if you are unable to attend live, the recording will be posted the following day for you to access and revisit.
This will count as meeting your official CPD quota with all major hypnotherapy associations if you attend half of these each year.
This month, my lecture on understanding hypnotisability (along with the screening process you can take part in) was recorded and added to the hub to catch up on anytime you wish. In February, we welcome Sarah mortimer presenting on the topic of understanding and dealing with overwhelming emotions.
– Monthly group supervision: You can attend and receive supervision from and with me, or join the group to learn and develop accordingly. Our January group session was great and a number of students and hypnotherapists were able to observe the session too.
These sessions count as your official supervision requirement with the UKHC, GHR and NCH (as well as meet the requirements for most other professional hypnotherapy member organisations). – Bi-Monthly Peer Support Group: Last week, I ran a presentation entitled "A hypnotherapy practice that thrives" which we recorded and is now in the business development section of the hub.
In particular, these sessions have a focus upon hypnotherapist business building – there’ll be a monthly presentation with a live discussion afterwards. This will include coaching, support, guidance and regular expert speakers. There will also be additional lectures and presentations of my own that I have recorded through the years adding to the business development section.
– Therapeutic Forms Depository: You will have access to and be able to download from a huge number of therapeutic forms used in cognitive behavioural, mindfulness based and ACT approaches to therapy.
We’ll also be holding a live Zoom skills practice session regularly – which is a great chance for our trainees to meet up and practice, and for graduates and seasoned hypnotherapists to hone skills and stay sharp. We have our next one coming up in a couple of weeks time.
