- Hello and welcome to the latest edition of Adam Up
March was such a busy month for me, I taught some one day seminars, and I have taught for the past two weekends on my intensive hypnotherapy diploma course and I return to class tomorrow for our monthly diploma course. I have fought with a bit of illness too and it didn't help that I was unable to rest and recover properly. That'll happen next week for sure when I'll be taking some of my own advice. I happen
to love my work, so it is not so much a chore as simply tiring.
The clocks changed here, and I find Spring a month where crisp sunny mornings are a joy on our local beaches, and the changeable weather and colours while everything springs into life is something I have grown to love and find awe-inspiring. The evidence for the benefits of experiencing awe in one's life is rather compelling and this month I include an article about seeking more awe in life and explaining some of the evidence as well as a how-to - thus today's subject line.
This edition of Adam Up also includes new articles about the mental health benefits of reading, how to be proud of yourself, and exploring what intelligence really is. I add daily posts to my social media accounts too (Instagram and Facebook in particular) with insight from the fields of hypnotherapy and psychology,
so if these articles and topics whet your appetite you can get much more by following those.
I've been at the gym working on goals for this quarter, and my weightlifting progress is being shared each day on my Instagram and Facebook stories where I'm holding myself accountable. I'm back in the lab at Bournemouth University with our latest research experiment that is examining response times with the Stroop task as well as measuring pupil sizes when hypnotised to gauge how much volition/effort our
participants put into the cognitive tasks when hypnotised and when not. It is hard work, but fascinating.
The hypnotherapist development hub has been underway too, you may recall I mentioned it in last months edition of this broadcast. Every Wednesday evening, I've been hanging out with fellow hypnotherapists for supervision, CPD and peer support.
I have also been announcing the fact that the 2022 UK Hypnosis Convention is up and running and we are really excited to tell you all about it.
Myself, and all of us who work here hope that you are safe and healthy wherever you are in this world. Likewise, I hope you are coping well with life currently and that your mental health is bearing up.
And just as a reminder, you are receiving this email because you signed up for this ezine, downloaded a course prospectus or attended a course at some point in time. If you no longer wish to receive this periodical hypnosis and personal development ezine, you may unsubscribe by clicking the link at the foot of this email. I only want you to receive it each week if you find it of value and you actually read it.
Also, we delete you from our distribution if you have not opened these emails for a while.
In compliance with GDPR, the only information that we hold is your name and email address. We will not share these details with anyone and we will only use them to send you this and related, relevant broadcasts. This broadcast is only sent to people who have signed up with our double opt-in system.
Ok, let's get on with it, shall we?
Articles: What's New?
A wide range of new articles to help in varying aspects of life here today...
|
All articles are founded in science and have references for you to explore should you wish:
1. Reading can have profound positive effects on both your mental and physical health. In this article, we are going to discuss the tremendous mental health benefits offered by reading.
Joseph Addison was right when he said, “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.”
Reading is a great way of taking care of your mental well-being. It is the same as exercising a muscle. With the passage of time, reading exercises will improve your comprehension as well as speed. Recently reading has been a center of scientific attention as more and more studies are being conducted to investigate the mental health effects of reading.
Brain scans were taken for the purpose of this research clearly showed that reading engages multiple complex networks of nerves and signals in the brain, resulting in enhanced brain connectivity. This brain connectivity was especially prominent in the somatosensory cortex, the parietal lobe responsible for interpreting physical sensations. In addition to strengthening neural circuits and pathways, mental health benefits of reading range from the improved emphasizing ability to reduced stress,
slow progression of cognitive decline to improved sleep quality. Along with all these benefits, reading is a very inexpensive form of self-therapy that allows you to take matters of your wellbeing into your own hands.
2. It is usually fairly simple to be proud of someone. For example, when your loved ones succeed, or your friend gets a desired promotion. Maybe it’s your sibling who got a promotion at work. Maybe someone you know well just published their first book. Yes, many of us find it easier to be proud of someone, so much so that at times you are bursting with happiness.
Yet have you ever wondered how proud you are of your own accomplishments? You may be too shy or humble to blow your own horn and may even not be that keen on getting extra attention. Maybe it makes you look a little too egoistic? Maybe you worry that it is narcissistic to talk about all that you have achieved? But it is important to realise that you have every right to be proud of your accomplishments, your successes, and all those moments where you have grown and taken a step forward.
It is completely up to you as to what to feel proud of. It does not necessarily have to be something tremendous or huge. It can be anything at all, anything special to you. Anything that makes you feel like you have learned from and grown as a person can count as an achievement. In its true essence, it could be the tiniest, smallest, and most seemingly insignificant thing, but if it’s something that makes you feel good and makes you love yourself a little more, it is worth being proud of. It
could be you learning the first ten numbers in French, or you learning how to cook something new.
Literally, anything that you want to feel proud of goes. So how exactly do you feel proud of things? Are you afraid you’ll sound a little too narcissistic? Throw caution to the wind. We can describe different ways in which you can feel proud of yourself and your little achievements. Therefore, let’s get you started…
3. Matthew Fox once said, “Awe is the beginning of wisdom. Awe is the beginning of education”.
This quote by Fox highlights the importance of awe as it makes us think more critically, be humbler and lead to greater satisfaction in life. Before we start discussing the benefits of experiencing awe in our daily lives and how we can feel awe more often, let’s begin by discussing what awe actually is. Awe is a mysterious and complex but powerful emotion that is similar to wonder but less joyful than it. Awe can induce goosebumps, make you drop your jaw, cause tears to flood your eyes, and
bring feelings of euphoria.
Recently, awe has become a focus of scientific research as more and more studies are showing that experiencing wonder can profoundly affect both your body and mind. Experiencing awe has a plethora of benefits ranging from alleviating stress to making you more generous, from dampening the feelings of materialism to making you feel like you have all the time in the world.
When we are young, we experience moments of awe often. However, seeking awe becomes low on our priority list as we grow up. The reason behind this could be that we believe wonder to be rare and a sensation that you experience once in a blue moon. ‘We talk about it as if it’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing, but in fact, it’s everywhere,’ says Dacher Keltner, who is a leading research scientist into the psychology of awe. So
believing that awe is attainable and exist around every corner of life can help you feel more wonderment and amazement in your life.
Here today, I’m sharing some ways for you to experience more awe-inspiring moments in your everyday life, enriching it as a result.
4. Throughout history, humanity has struggled to quantify and measure the things that make us adapt, evolve, and survive.
Nowadays, we pretty much use the terms “intelligent” and “smart” interchangeably and with the connotation that they both mean something along similar lines.
Some people base their entire personalities on stereotypes around intelligence, and organisations like MENSA offer an exclusive club for those with exceptional IQ scores.
People convince themselves things like artistic ability and analytical intelligence are mutually exclusive.
Others even believe your intellect is set in stone from the day you are born and that you can’t change it.
But, is that really true, and what can the history and theories about intelligence tell us about ourselves?

The Anglo European College Hypnotherapist Development Hub:
This hypnotherapist development hub has just gone live and you can read more about it and subscribe monthly or annually by visiting the official page for it here at this page of the college website.
It is an online members area with live weekly offerings aimed at educating, developing and supporting hypnotherapists. This includes:
– Extensive digital resources: educational training videos available to stream, including our diploma course, advanced diploma, hypnotic coaching course, rapid inductions, science of self-hypnosis, additional specialist lectures, much more (similar to existing members area).
– Monthly specialist live lecture: Including a range of specialist lectures from academics, authors and experienced specialists. Attend live and get to ask questions and interact with leaders in the field, but if you are unable to attend live, the recording will be posted the following day for you to access and revisit.
This will count as meeting your official CPD quota with all major hypnotherapy associations if you attend half of these each year.
April's is next week! I'm really excited, read all about it.... April 2022 Webinar with Kev Sheldrake: Does It Matter How Hypnosis Works?
– Monthly group supervision: You can attend and receive supervision from and with me, or join the group to learn and develop accordingly. Our January group session was great and a number of students and hypnotherapists were able to observe the session too.
These sessions count as your official supervision requirement with the UKHC, GHR and NCH (as well as meet the requirements for most other professional hypnotherapy member organisations). Have a read of this article that explains how our group supervision sessions work: Monthly Group Supervision Sessions: Starting in 2022.
– Bi-Monthly Peer Support Group: This month we welcome the brilliant Fran Excel who will be presenting about the subject of getting comfortable being visible.
In particular, these sessions have a focus upon hypnotherapist business building – there’ll be a monthly presentation with a live discussion afterwards. This will include coaching, support, guidance and regular expert speakers. There will also be additional lectures and presentations of my own that I have recorded through the years adding to the business development section.
– Therapeutic Forms Depository: You will have access to and be able to download from a huge number of therapeutic forms used in cognitive behavioural, mindfulness based and ACT approaches to therapy.
We’ll also be holding a live Zoom skills practice session regularly – which is a great chance for our trainees to meet up and practice, and for graduates and seasoned hypnotherapists to hone skills and stay sharp. We have our next one coming up in a couple of weeks time.
This hypnotherapist development hub is an amazing resource giving ongoing support and you can subscribe monthly or annually by visiting the official page for it here at this page of the college website.
So you won’t have to worry about where to look for your CPD requirements, you’ll have your supervision requirements met, you’ll have access to resources we have never offered before, as well as LOTS of training videos and materials.
I’m aiming for this to offer a great deal of ongoing resource, support, guidance and importantly professional development to all who are part of it. For those looking to be part of something, and joining an amazing cause too, it will create a great community of us evidence based hypnotherapists seeking to raise standards in this field, seeking to shake off myth and misinformation, seeking to examine and understand the science, the research, the literature that informs this field with a view to
improving what we do and ultimately achieving greater results with our clients.
