Hello Welcome To This Week's Adam Up

Image
Katie and I had a week long holiday at the end of last Summer in the west country. The sun shone on the part of Cornwall we were in! The apartment we stayed in had Peirce Brosnan as a neighbour and had a panoramic view of the harbour. It was bliss to just sit and watch the world going by.
We sailed, visited places of great beauty, ate much, drank much and laughed heartily. A very much needed and thoroughly enjoyed period of time with my wife.

I have been talking about it with friends this week...
Some of the Cornish people seem to have this wonderful knack of being happy. That is, the life they lead seems to fulfil them...
As Richard Bandler once said in not so many words, they really do seem to want the things they have got in this life.

This week, I am sharing with you a process designed to create more deep-rooted self-acceptance.

Self-acceptance tends to be easier when it is experienced through multiple perspectives and through a variety of your senses...

Which is why I write about this shortly after having talked about my experience of the truly magnificent Lost Gardens of Heligan, some stunning creeks off local rivers, the awe of the Eden project, the natural beauty of the coastline at Lizard Point and so much more whilst in Cornwall... The sounds, the glorious sights, the flavours of the local produce and delicacies, the feelings stirred and shared while all this occurred... Really did enable me to leave an existing mindset, experience myself afresh and accept myself truly in a wonderful way again.

When I first set out in the world of therapy and personal development, I was advised by a good friend and mentor that I should consider reading the autobiographies and biographies of the people that inspired me... Or people that I wanted to aspire to be like in some way... He said it was the closest thing to being coached personally and learning about these people... In the field of NLP, it is perhaps considered to be raw material for modelling aspects of these people.

So I read several autobiographies and still do so... My favourites include Brian Clough, the football manager of my beloved Nottingham Forest when we won two European Cups in successive seasons. Paula Radcliffe, the marathon world record holder, Richard Branson the entrepreneur, Martin Luther King, Ghandi, John Lydon (Jonny Rotten of Sex pistols fame), Iggy Pop, Stuart Pearce (my favourite footballer of all time) and so on and so on.

I know it is one of those interesting topics of conversation at dinner parties where we sometimes discuss what our own autobiography might be like, it is even a question I sometimes ask my own clients when they are looking for resources from their life... What would your autobiography be like? What chapters would be easy and enjoyable, what would you be proud of, what stands out most prominently, what would be challenging?
It makes for some interesting thoughts, does it not?

This week, I am using a technique first championed, designed and utilised by Leslie Cameron Bandler and have put a bit of my own spin into it. It is designed to help advance your self-acceptance and uses the notion of autobiography to great effect. Enjoy!

8 Steps To Write The Autobiography Of Your Life in Your Mind

Step One:

Induce hypnosis. You can do so by any means you desire or know of.

You can use the process in my self-hypnosis book, use the free audio at this website to practice or have a look at the following articles as and when you need them; they are basic processes to help you simply open the door of your mind:

Heavy Arm Self-Hypnosis Induction Method:

Using eye fixation for self-hypnosis:

The Betty Erickson Self-Hypnosis Method video clip:

Using Magnetic Hands for Self-Hypnosis:

Hand to Face Self-Hypnosis Induction:

The Coin Drop Self-Hypnosis Induction:

Once you have induced hypnosis, move on to step two..

Step Two:

Have a think about the wonderful amount of love, acceptance and appreciation your loved ones have for you. Just think about that while also reminding yourself that although it is not something you can see all the time, there is a lot of love, acceptance and appreciation for who you are from your loved ones.

This might be a relative such as a parent or a sibling or a really good friend from your life.
If you are now humming 'the worms song' to yourself, stop it! (i.e. "nobody loves me, everybody hates me, I think I'll go and eat worms..." etc) Yes indeed, just stop it now.

If you are challenged to think of someone close, just allow any memory to come up where you were appreciated or accepted... It may be of someone who helped you in some way at some time in your life which got you feeling appreciated and accepted and worthy of being loved. Alternatively, imagine what it would be like.

Take all the time necessary for this step, allow your mind to select a memory from your life and then have an image of that memory in your mind. When you have that memory and the image that goes with it firmly in your mind, with all its sights, colours, sounds and the good feelings that accompany it, then you can just relax for a moment. Place that image over to the side for a few moments, just over to one side of your mind. We'll come back to it in a short while.

Step Three:

Now just imagine that you are looking up at a huge screen. Maybe it is like a cinema screen, or a very large TV screen, just imagine it in whatever way seems right for you.

Upon the image now place a picture, an image of you sitting at a desk...
Maybe it is a desk you have sat at before in your life, maybe it is a desk you imagine and create in your mind, or maybe one that you have seen someone else use...
Just notice the colours and textures of it all... As you do that, notice that you are sat at that desk writing your autobiography.

Notice what kind of writing tool you are using, a pen or pencil or even a quill!? (Painstaking to use those things, you know!)  Or perhaps you see yourself typing away on a typewriter or a computer.

Most importantly for now, watch yourself sitting there at that desk writing up your own autobiography with vigour and enthusiasm, maybe even some excitement as you tell your own personal life story to the world through the pages of your autobiography. You are writing it, you are deciding what goes in and you are doing it with zest, enthusiasm and enjoying doing so.

With that firmly in your mind, you can move on to the next step.

Step Four:

Watch now as that version of you sat at that desk begins showing more of the jewels of your life, the imprint you have made on the world, the lessons you have learned, the variety of experiences you have had, all the elements of life that have contributed to you being who and how you are today.

You can start to choose and notice the details of the room, the just right temperature, the colours and details of that room you are in. You can also start to get glimpses of the words that you are writing... Progressive, powerful, good words... And as you watch that happening... You can imagine what it would be like to actually be sat down in this place writing your autobiography... As you imagine what it would be like, you can actually step into the shoes of that version of you and become that you, sat there in that place, in that room, writing your autobiography with joy, energy and enthusiasm.

Really tune in to this, really become that version of you sat there, watch the words being written and enjoy it, allow a sense of enjoyment to wash over you before you move on.

Step Five:

As you are writing your autobiography, you notice that stood in the doorway of the room is that person... That person you thought of in step two... Looking upon you in that appreciative way... Who accepts you just as you are... So you decide to include this person in your autobiography.

Recall that image of them from the side of your mind where you previously placed it. Go ahead and write up that image in much detail in your book. Describe this person, describe the wonder of them and the unconditional love that they have for you and that you feel when you are in close proximity to this person and write about the times you had together and how much you loved those times.

In this relaxed, receptive state of mind, take all the time you need to truly let this happen.

Step Six:

Now just step out of that version of you. Imagine that you float up and out of that body and are once again watching you sat at that desk writing your autobiography with so much acceptance and enjoyment.

Float over and stand next to that person in the doorway. Be there, looking at you writing away at that desk, standing next to this person who loves you, who accepts you and appreciates you as you are. Feel the love and sensations of acceptance that this loving person emits as you stand in close proximity to them. All those wonderful feelings and senses are projected to that version of you sat at that desk writing your autobiography.

As you feel that, you can begin to discover even more that wonderful sensation of love for you over there. You can begin to get a sense of what they see, hear and feel when they look at you. Allow yourself to take on board and also enjoy some of those feelings that this person has for that version of you over there.

Imagine what it would be like to be that person. To know what it is truly like to love and accept and appreciate you. Imagine what it is like think lovingly about you and to love you as you are. Think and experience what it is like to respect you and enjoy all those things that are unique about you.

At this stage you might even like to name all those feelings that are being felt towards you. As these words occur to you, you can name all these loving feelings in whatever way feels right to you, let words emerge and name those feelings. Let those names flow around inside your mind.
Take all the time you need to truly savour this sensation, these words and truly watch yourself and appreciate yourself over there... Enjoying writing up the story of your life.

Step Seven:

For a second time, just as you did before, step inside the shoes of that version of you again now. Float in to that version of you, enjoying writing your autobiography with enthusiasm and vigour...

And now you can write about this amazing experience. However you are writing, you now write about how amazing this experience was and still is... That you sense all the love being felt for you, the appreciation, the acceptance... You feel inspired to add all this to the book of your life that you want to share with the world. So that the book of your life also gets to learn even more about your uniqueness.

All the experience at all levels that you have just had gets written up and emptied onto the pages of this book of your life. You are describing with all of your senses, these new feelings, these new memories of feeling complete love from that other person and so much more besides.

You allow yourself to write about this experience which in your book is the past, and you write it as if it is the future... And you begin to imagine feeling more and more of this in your future. You start to write future memories of love and acceptance and these get poured into your book with energy and enthusiasm too.

You imagine that as you write up more joy and love into your life... Your body and mind starts to soak up and enjoy this more and more.

Once you have written enough for now... Just relax in the chair for as long as you want to and soak it all up. Soak up and absorb as much of this experience as you possibly can. Integrating it into your mind, body and life.

Step Eight:

When you truly feel all those differences happening at a variety of levels, then open your eyes, wiggle your fingers and toes and go about your day.

Go and take some action that undeniably convincing to you that the changes have started. Think about how different your life is going to be as a result of this experience.
Very cool session, eh?

I did this a few times while I was away last year and with all the other stimulus, it had a truly marvellous effect upon me and I hope it does the same for you.

Joke Of The Week

A drunk stumbles across an Evangelical mass baptism service by a river.

He wades into the water and stands next to the preacher.

"My son, are you ready to find Jesus?" the preacher asks.

"Yes, sure" , says the drunk.

The minister puts his head under the water and pulls him back.

"Have you found Jesus?"

"No, I didn't", says the drunk.

The preacher dunks him under the water for a bit longer.

"Have you found Jesus?"

"No, I have not Reverend."

The preacher holds the man down for more than 30 seconds. "By all the saints have you found Jesus this time?"

The drunks splutters, wipes his eyes and says: "Look, are you sure this is where he fell in?"

Hahahaha.... I love that one...

Thanks to all of you who send the jokes in,  I love getting them.
