Hello And Welcome To Adam Up

I am going to be away next week, so will not be around to write Adam Up.

I will be in the West Country for reasons that I shall share in more detail when I return.

Are You Safe In Your Own Skin?
In recent weeks, leading up to this point in my life, I have had to deal with a very particular personal life situation that has not been without challenges. Throughout some of the challenging situations, there have been challenging people.

In order to preserve my own integrity, it has involved me having to bite my tongue, and walking away from certain scenarios that have felt emotionally charged, with a cool head in order to make good decisions. Not always easy.

A number of coping skills and resilience developing processes have been used, yet one particular process continues to help me when it comes to going into challenging situations that require me to detach emotionally, and not take things personally.....

I have written about it before in Adam Up and thought it was a great time to offer it up again....


Those of you in the UK may remember an advertisement for a breakfast cereal called 'Ready Brek'.  In the advertisements, if you had eaten your Ready Brek (instant hot oats) then you had a sort of orange glow around you... In the adverts, everyone would be shivering in the bus queue waiting for the bus, but the chap who ate his Ready Brek was glowing and warm with his orange glow...

I used to be hypnotised by this idea as a boy!




Why Am I Mentioning This Today?
When I was younger, I used to have a crush on the spectacularly attractive receptionist at my workplace. At that stage in my life, I had never met anyone that good looking - women like her only existed in magazines and on TV at that stage in my life! I used to try and act cool each time I walked in to work, but I often felt I was making a fool of myself!

One day, I went to a party on the 50th floor of Canary Wharf, missed my last train home and had to sleep on my friends floor, I got to work in the same clothes I had worn the day before and had slept in... As I walked in the girl on reception, a part-time model and now good friend of mine, said to me "ooh Adam, you look like shit today!"

As I strolled into the office, I felt as if an axe had been planted in my heart...

I was mortified.

My self-esteem was knocked for six! I started avoiding people for the day and fully malfunctioned as a human being that day! She had meant nothing by it, but it had affected me in such a way that I was non-productive in many ways that day.


Crazy stuff, eh?

Yet, a number of years after that, when 4 women out of an audience of 1500 that I was speaking to in Las Vegas at a conference, got up and walked out because of how they felt about my language... Well, that stuff just bounced off me... I took the positive lessons and learning's and did not let it affect me detrimentally... After all, their reaction to my language was their issue not mine.

There was a time in my life where something like that would make me want to crawl up into a ball and sob for a week!

Today though... I have 'Ready Brek Man Mode!'

Yes indeed, things I do not want to take on board and carry around with me, I do not let past my shield.
A shield that I wear psychologically that protects me in the same way as many super-heroes...

I recommend you all have one too.

That is what today's process is about - you installing your own protective shield.


Protect Yourself - Install Your Shield With These Steps

This week, I'm just sharing with you a really lovely self-hypnosis technique to ensure you learn how to protect yourself. Just install your shield with these simple steps:

Step One:

Induce hypnosis. You can do so by any means you desire or know of. You can use the process in my self-hypnosis book, use the free audio at this website to practice or have a look at the following articles as and when you need them; they are basic processes to help you simply open the door of your mind:

Once you have induced hypnosis, move on to step two


Step Two:

While in a still position, you may notice that some areas are more easy to relax...

while others happen moment-by-moment...

So use your imagination and let yourself begin feeling all those gentle sensations of stillness and relaxation throughout your entire body...

the most relaxed and comfortable parts of your body, as you notice what makes them feel so relaxed, just imagine the relaxed feelings spreading throughout the rest of you too.


Take your time to do this thoroughly, because we'll need you to be tuned into your body as we proceed with this process.


Step Three:

As you imagine all those comfortable sesnsations continuing to gently radiate to all of your body, you might like to imagine this in your mind...

To just imagine the relaxation spreading to every part of your being and within every atom of you. You might like to imagine the relaxation is like the rays of sun that is gently warming and soothing you. Or maybe like circles of water radiating outwards from a pebble dropped into a gentle pond..

As you take the time to enjoy this, let yourself understand how important it is to enjoy this healing sensation...


Step Four:

This is the important part...

Using your mind and imagination, now let this deep, comfortable and relaxing feeling gently and powerfully move out beyond your physical self.


Imagine it radiating out...

right out...

all around you..

forming a powerful protective shield all around your body and mind, just like an invulnerable second skin....

Sense it and let it spread all around your being. Imagine that you are turning into the man in the 'Ready Brek' adverts!


Again, take all the right time necessary to do this properly and thoroughly.


Step Five:

As this protective shield is a creation of your unconscious mind, you can do with it what you wish. So you can allow this powerful shield to protect you, in any ways that you want to...

This shield can act as a filter, to filter out and remove those feelings or things going on around you, that in the past you used to find stressful or uncomfortable perhaps...

filtering the way you respond to circumstances and situations....

allowing you instead to let in those feelings you wish to let in and experience...

and it can act as an amplifier too to help you understand people and to help people to understand you...


Using your imagination, just think about how you are going to use this shield for your betterment and enhanced well-being. Take all the time necessary to think of as many scenarios as possible and when you are ready to move on, you can do so.


Step Six:
 
Thank your mind for allowing you to benefit from this and then open your eyes, wiggle your finger and toes and go about your day with your newly installed shield - just imagining that it is there working for you all the time...

Even when you are not thinking about it, it is there working for you, protecting you and helping you.


This week, practice this as much as possible and watch how it allows you to do so much more than you ever imagined! Notice how it also allows you to feel fortified in challenging situations, even when people are being challenging too!
