With the new month we have a couple of new themes, starting off with using self-hypnosis to advance our memory!

You may recall that last week we announced the launch of our new online Hypnosis Hub, aimed at anyone with a personal or professional interest in hypnosis. There are forums to discuss, groups to join, photos to laugh at and people to meet, and it is all free, so do come and join us there: adamshypnosishub.com

Using Self-Hypnosis To Advance Our Memory

This coming weekend is the last module with my current monthly Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma course. It seems like yesterday that I was welcoming them all in to class for the first time.

This group of students has been wonderful and I am certain of many of them going on to do truly great things in this field of hypnotherapy.

When I remember the very first time they were in class together for the first module, you know what? I was able to call them all by name by 9:00am when we started the training... "Is Adam bragging in some way here?" - Nope, just stating something that I consider to be important. I remembered each persons name straight away, and not because they were wearing name badges!

One of the things I insist upon during the early days of the course is name badges. Everyone gets a name badge so that even if they have introduced themselves time and again to another student, there are no awkward moments of people grappling for names and making embarrassed guesses when practising hypnosis skills.

It is courteous to remember names, it is good manners and it shows that they were important enough for you to remember who they were.

I get asked a great deal during trainings, how it is that I seem to be able to recall so much literature and sources when teaching. I think firstly, having been in this field for as long as I have (I have not really done much else in my lifetime professionally), I ought to know references and sources related to what I am talking about; but secondly is the classic key ingredient of attention and awareness...

And it is that same attention that ensures I remember names right away.

In order to remember anything, you have to pay attention to it. Many people think repetition is key to memory and it certainly helps, but however many times something is repeated, it needs your attention for it to make its way into your memory banks.

If you want to remember someone's name when you first meet them, you think of the name, picture it when you meet them and are told it, you look at the person in detail and really associate them with the name, then want to remember the name - concentrate your mind, think, look, listen, feel, associate and you'll then remember.

On a course, there are often so many other names to remember, so many sounds in class, many competing feelings and sensations and so much going on in the head (new material to learn, nerves, thoughts, internal dialogue) that can all be a distraction to paying really good attention and concentrating.

It is like if my wife tells me about something while I am watching the television. If my mind is engaged on the telly, it is unlikely that I'll take on board the full message being spoken to me. So I'll pause the telly, and go and engage fully to make sure I remember... Or I get in trouble ;-)

So over the next couple of weeks, I am going to show you how to use self-hypnosis to enhance memory with a couple of techniques and strategies for doing so.

Technique To Enhance Memory:

First up, we are going to create an attention grabbing memory bank of the mind.

Get yourself comfortable and in a place where you are going to be undisturbed for the time of this session, with your arms and legs uncrossed, and we'll get cracking:

STEP ONE:

Induce hypnosis...

You can do so by any means you desire or know of.

You can use the process in my self-hypnosis book, use the free audio at this website to practice or have a look at the following articles as and when you need them; they are basic processes to help you simply open the door of your mind:

Using eye fixation for self-hypnosis:

Once you have induced hypnosis, move on to step two >>

STEP TWO:

Imagine travelling deeper into your mind. In whatever way represents going deeper into your mind, imagine that happening now and as you do that, tell yourself that you are travelling deeper into your mind.

Travel deeply and imagine travelling to that place in your mind where your memory exists. Imagine arriving at a place in your mind that is your memory.

You can imagine it as a living, breathing, interactive bank environment. The bank of your mind. Your memory bank.

Start to create the environment of your memory bank, notice what it looks like, how it is shaped, formed and if it represents a real-life bank, or if it is obscure and conceptualised, or just symbolic in some way. I have a kind of sci-fi look to my own that sounds truly bizarre if written, so I'll not go into any more detail.

Make sure that your memory bank deep in your mind has a vault of some kind and when you are happy that you have created it and have it detailed in your mind, move on to the next step.

STEP THREE:

The first thing to do in your memory bank, is to make a deposit, and open your account and start top develop your beneficial relationship you're your memory bank.

You step up to the bank vault and you pay in some attention. Do this in whatever way seems right to you. Imagine physically paying in some awareness and attention, focus and concentration into your memory bank vault.

You know that in the future, out there in real-life situations and circumstances, each and every time you wish to invest your memory, you pay attention.

The live bank of your mind signals to you each and every time something happens in your life that you know is important, useful or beneficial to remember. Maybe it sends a message to your awareness for you to pay attention and so you do.

You instinctively focus, you concentrate, you look at details, you listen closely and engage your senses fully - you pay attention. As you pay that attention, the bank invests all that information wisely and safely ready for you to access it in the future.

Take a couple of moments, to imagine yourself in a situation of your life, paying attention when you are told someone's name, or when being given a piece of information and notice how your mind alerts you, you pay attention and focus and that information is stored in the vault of your mind.

When you are sure you have done each aspect of this step as vividly as you can, then move on to the next step.

STEP FOUR:

Having invested your attention, you step up to the vault again to make a withdrawal.

You notice that you are rewarded with gold. However that happens for you, imagine being richly rewarded - notice how your attention has been invested and converted into gold rewards.

In real-life terms, the gold you receive is accurate information, that is so easily recalled. You may even be surprised at how readily available this information is and you notice the accuracy of it.

Each and every time you recall and remember, the vault develops more fluency. It is a live bank in the centre of your mind that is becoming more effective and efficient as it receives more attention being deposited.

When you make a withdrawal, you trust the vault of your mind, you treat it with trust and respect and this treatment gets it working for you. As you start using it, at times it may be slower than desired as it develops and gets used to being more effective. You never attempt to force information out of the vault, if you force it, it inhibits the vaults ability. You trust and wait patiently for the vault to respond.

Knowing that you have developed that relationship with the bank of your mind, knowing how you plan to treat it, you move on to the next step.

STEP FIVE:

You remind yourself of how your memory bank works at its optimum level.

You make proper deposits in the memory bank by paying attention; you listen closely, you look intently, you engage your senses and imagination and connect with your subject matter using your concentration and focus. Then, when you wish to make a withdrawal, you trust the vault, you let it ease out the gold and return it to you, knowing that each successful withdrawal is advancing and enhancing the effectiveness of your memory bank.

When you are certain of this process, have paid attention to it in your mind, you can proceed to the final step.

STEP FIVE:

Think about how wonderful it is going to be in your life to have this advanced, accurate and fast memory bank working for you. Think about how your life is made better as a result of this, think about the areas of your life that now benefit. When you have given that some thought, then you can take a couple of larger, energizing breaths.

Wiggle your toes and fingers, stretch your limbs and open your eyes.

Now start to get your memory bank functioning effectively, start to pay attention and notice the golden withdrawals starting to happen.

As with so many of these self-hypnosis processes, you'll benefit from repeating the session.

Enjoy that, I'll be back with more soon.
